Good result for us and Cody..
We'll pay a premium, but he projects to be a top tier talent..
Moving forward though.. this may make it easier for a Northern Academy gun player to get to us (or another Melbourne based club) in the future, if the Northern clubs have a number of Academy players. They won't be able to get them all..

Yep, many predicted what was going to happen... make statements about a lock out, then only implement something less drastic, and look how its worked, pencil case in point seems happy and that this is common sense. Which I imagine is how AFL wanted people to feel.

Yeah, nah... easy manipulation to make the decision seem like the best choice by making all the options much much worse.

THANK YOU AFL YOU ARE SO GREAT AND WISE, THANK YOU FOR CODY!!! /s

Always great to be a Club that manages stumble into these rule changes after other teams get the advantage. I actually agree, the rules were terrible and needed to be addressed, just sucks we seem to be a team that manages to stub our little toe on the edge of these rules time and again.

2006 Priority picks removed, well done to the Pies getting Pendlebury and Thomas with that rule the year before... by tanking
2012 the AFL scrapped automatic thresholds and made it discretionary, thankfully we were great after that rule change... 2015-2018 was fantastic and we did not need any assistance. I think we won 5 or six more games than Fitzroy over the same period, which is not bad but not great since they last played in the comp in the 1990's so a bit of an unfair comparison.
2019-2023 After the above and Carlton became mediocre AFL introduces ongoing special-assistance packages by discretion, we got a couple local league players, GC the very next year with a better win/loss record got the motherload... cool cool cool. WCE to get assist this year thank god, they have been a rabble for 25 years
2025, now more DVI changes after ladder leaders and Preliminary and Grand Final frquent attendees get huge discounts on generational talents.

And obviously 2002, well those kind of sanctions have never been applied again to any team, even one that injected 34 players with PEDs. The clubs **** up, but certainly the AFL have never come close to doing that again.

In conclusion, we have sucked hard and have been in the bottom quartile for well run clubs for 25 years, we also seem to manage to collide with AFL bullshit frequently. Thank you.
Wholeheartedly agree, it’s so flipping uncanny you’d swear it was deliberate

Yes forced trades. Shitloads. A lot of players move because clubs can no longer hold them.

Just about all players who are a year or two away from free agency who are good players in their team are traded because of free agency.

Bailey Smith then. He doesn't get traded prior to free agency and if he does the Bulldogs do a lot better.

I'm not going to scroll through lists and come up with a list for you. It's easy to see that good players move a lot more. It's as clear as day what is happening.

I guarantee you, in the next 2 years, watch Geelong and Collingwood bring in A grade midfielders, via trades but they are getable because of free agency.
There’s a reason why you are not giving examples, just about all players who are a year or two away from free agency are being traded, list them.

Bailey Smith was seen by so many here as a massive risk, has mental health issues, has behavioural issues, talk of substance abuse and was out of contract, he wasn’t traded as a pre agent either.

The odds of him going #1 are very low historically and if he goes 2 or below we should have no issues matching it with two mid range firsts.

Pick 2 without accounting for a potential discount if it remains or the deficit rule would be pick 10 + pick 11. Hardly a concern.
Also no father son has gone earlier than pick 3 I think it is,

what reason does Cody have to stay in the pioneers and vic country talent pathway next year. If we negotiate terms with him early next year why would he want to potentially ruin his chances of ending up with us
100%, and that’s exactly what’s going to happen you can put your house on it

I suspect the changes to the bidding system will spark a wave of unofficial “alliances” between clubs with something to lose. Think Carlton, Port and Essendon quietly agreeing not to drop early bids on each other’s prospects (or on Syd/GWS/GC/Bris Academy kids) and they return the favour.

On top of that, we’ll probably see plenty of trade deals with unspoken conditions attached: an implied understanding that part of the exchange is, “don’t bid on our players”.

You’re assuming they keep the same DVI, which given Twomey’s tweet, you shouldn’t be.

Even if they don't, we will get Cody. The club won't be willing to give up a generational talent they have priority access to. They'll make the required moves to get him in.
Surely some clubs will walk away and choose to keep hold of the assets required to do deals. There’s a tipping point somewhere, or will it take a club or two to pay through the roof and have a bust?

AFL screwing us again.
What gets me is the fact that Geelong are one of the three clubs that wanted the F/S bidding removed, and just shows what a bunch of hypocrites they are considering the F/S they picked up in Matty Scarlett, Tom Hawkins and perhaps the greatest F/S in history in Gary Ablett jnr all helped Geel to win flags!!! That bloody coach of theirs Chris Scott has to be the biggest whinger of all time, and he works the AFL beautifully with his media sermons designed to influence anything that the cats might be needing. Whately does pretty well for them as well.......The F/S Kardinia nursery must be a bit barren at the moment so they want to stop other clubs from gaining anything. One of the other clubs that wanted the rule stopped are the saints and that sooky president of theirs, and it`s all because their former players have mostly produced girls and not boys, but they are fine at the moment because they have plenty of $$$ to attract players from other clubs unfortunately for Carlton. It just shows how selfish clubs are when it suits them........

We managed to package up a deal to get a top 3 pick just last year easily enough, and that was without the motivation of securing a f/s.

We know 12 months out what we need to do. We managed it within a week last year so I think we'll be fine to work it out by next November.
Clubs will be reluctant to trade for early picks due to this very reason. This is a terrible outcome. If we end up with pick 8 in the 2026 draft we need to find another top 5 pick to match if Walker is bid in the top 2.
Nearly impossible without giving away the farm.

No we don't. Pick 8 and pick 15 would get us the points for Walker at 2.

If the discount remains in place we may not even need that much.
