Would be nice if we could stop with the 32 year old plus defenders. I get we want a stop gap but I'd much prefer someone Butts age
Kolodjashnij turned 30 just over a month ago. Probably has a couple of years left but will be the best 1 to bring in if miss out on Wilkie & Butts.

The ones I don't want on the list are May & Laverde. Mcgovern I rather not because I don't think Dogs can improve him. The right team like pies can push him to do 1% more and not be a big liability. Frost only as a SSP option but it means there will be unlikely any improvement in defence.

I hope dogs look at Kolodjashnij. Was injured most of the season.
Laverde is joining GWS

I know everyone's salty at st kilda and blowing their money on like 5 players but jeez whiz what else are they supposed to do. No one would want to go there unless they massively overpay... at least they are trying something different. And theyve now somewhat become a destination club because good players who want a pay day will automatically think hmm st kilda will pay up. What have we done outside the norm to ever give us a leg up. Maybe if we tried something extreme we would have barrass on our list.
I hate st kilda and hope we get Wilkie but I kind of think.good.on.them for what theyve been doing, while we just keep being the nice club who doesn't take.any BIG risks.
I think it's also good because it's making the salary cap also operate as a salary cap to equalise the league, if all players in general are motivated by earning as much money as they can.

The reason why teams like Geelong, Sydney, Brisbane have been consistently good over the last decade is because the salary cap doesn't impact them because they can convince players earning the most isn't the greatest motivation in the world, so sign with us for less. But players are less likely to sign for Geelong for half a million per year and "lifestyle" if they can get three times that (from any club). Over time there'll be a mindset shift and teams will have to go to Geelong because they're paying the most money, because that's how it all works now.

God I will be annoyed if we dont bring in a decent backman or two (no frost or may dont count) I will genuinely loose interest before the season even starts
Who would you bring in that they aren’t targeting and how would you do it? I don’t know who else the club can target they aren’t having a crack at? We’ve successfully moneyballed Jones and Lobb over the last few years so we’ve certainly been having a crack. I just don’t see that throwing a $2 million deal at Weitering does anything but create negative click bait for the media.

They’re tactic is similar too I’m poor can’t buy a house going to the casino with all my savings and hope for the best

None of what they’ve added is any good even if they also add Flanders he’s not a mid
Wouldn't surprise me if next year we finish 5th and they finish 8th and beat us in a knock.out final.... what theyve added is good and just because we haven't paid 3 times.what they are ACTUALLY worth, it doesn't mean what they've added isn't good. Imagine if they we're all coming to us next year. We'd be losing our minds(In a good way)

That's the problem with big risks though. Sure there is a chance of big rewards, but odds are they won't work thats why it's a BIG risk. We'd just be canned as being irresponsible if we took that approach, and rightfully so IMO. But I do appreciate the position the saints are in where this approach makes more sense.

If we end up keeping our 1st think Dovaston needs to be a priority. We need more threatening small forwards. Looking at the Lions Lohman, Bailey & Cameron all serious goal kicking threats helps to split defences and stop the ball slingshotting out of the forward line.
McNeil and VDM are ignored mostly as they don't present a credible risk to opposing defences.

We may already have the solutions on our list.

Weightman
A Jones
Hynes
Dolan

Weightman being back will help things massively too. Most of the good teams have an array of dangerous smalls to count on, we’ve largely ignored it but Dolan gives me hope

Rayner was pretty awful for most of the game but had quite a few bone crunching tackles in the third and fourth which were real momentum builders. Something we don’t get from our guys other than West, although Weightmans defensive stuff was missed this year too

Probably need pressure just as much as goals. Pointless scoring 3-4 goals now and then, if you barely touch the ball, stick a tackle, or have a poor pressure rating.

Forward pressure
Defensive Structure across the whole ground/midfield
Defensive personnel

I think those are the three key areas we need to improve on in the offseason.

I am curious to the CAREER pressure rating of all of Weightman, West, Jones, Dolan, and whoever else. And how they rank vs the best few players in the league, and the league average. I know someone else made a post highlighting the Cats forwards pressure ratings in the Preliminary Final compared to how our players average.

Correct me if I’m wrong but didn’t West average the highest pressure rating of the small forwards this year?
