Re: 'Alleged' rumours resurfacing ...

Folks, this is the way things are here.

Posters are responsible for what they post. Moderators can not attest to the accuracy or otherwise of any rumour posted.

Moderators will intervene for a couple of reasons.

1. If a thread is threatening to be derailed because of a post.

2. If invested parties request the removal of material.

None of this draws a conclusion as to the accuracy or otherwise of the original post.

There is no need to further speculate. What will be will be.

Also, you need to remember that this thread like all parts of this forum is bound by the rules of poster conduct. If you want to express skepticism towards a rumour that's fine, but having a crack at posters who are contributors to this forum is simply not on and will be acted upon.

Simply put, don't be a dick.

Thanks all!

Now the GF has been run and won. Any news on our assistant coaching lineup for next year?
Candidates;
Dale Morris
Nigel Lappin (sounds like he’s rebuked our offer, maybe TAS lifestyle with $’s will tempt later)

Scott Burns - Burgess has announced his departure.

The merry go round will kick off with the knock on moves with changes now we’re over + King/Melbourne additions (Scarlett coming back?).
Dew off to PTA?

Not really a "rumor" per se but just reporting something that Cripps said at a function I attended last night that I thought was interesting.

He was asked about the captaincy and said that he'd probably have it for another year or two since there's a belief that nobody else is quite ready yet.

Said when the time comes it would likely go to Walshy, since both him and Weiters set a great example but Walshy is more of a people-person. He said the way Walsh relates to and communicates with people is great, whereas Weiters "just hates people" (said in a joking way, to much laughter.)

However the most interesting part was that he volunteered (without specifically being asked) that after Walshy the next Captain would be Jagga Smith. This was met by surprise even by the MC, since he hasn't even played a game yet. Cripps was surprisingly adamant and just said that when you're a leader you can instantly see when it exists in spades in others, and Jagga has it.
Nitpicking here of course but the captain should be chosen every year by the club.

To be a captain and imply no one else is ready to justify holding your position, smells a bit.

There advantage of top 4 teams raiding lower clubs through free agency still needs to be squeezed a little.
The top 4 club receiving the free agent they hand over their pick as compensation deemed as fair by AFL for the club losing the player

All I want from this club is to bring in quality assistant coaches. We’ve had our chance over the last 3-4 years ago when the club replaced outgoing coaches with the likes of Hamill, Russell and Clarke. We can do better.

But the club losing the player is weakened because the draftee needs to be developed to get back to the level of what they lost.

If free agency went the other way and bottom clubs could hand-pick players from the top teams the competition would even up much quicker.

I'm just looking into ways that the bottom 6 clubs can rise faster, then we end up with more revolving of the finishing positions of all clubs.
The new DVI values will help slightly, but it's the current free agency rules which can be tweaked to disadvantage consistently high performing teams.
The top teams not having access to the very best of the bottom teams for free. Plus not further damaging the draft positions of mid ranged teams by reducing the Band 1 compensations.

You'd want a better player than Gruzewski. He should be a target for a later trade.
Like we do every season, we look for trends from the winners. If you watch Brisbane this season they have shown if a kid can take a contested mark and kick straight he doesn't need to be a superstar, the superstars are the ground level players that can create goals out of nothing. On that basis Gruzewski would be a realistic target, but finding the x factor smalls, which we have been crying about for years needs to be the priority.

Curnow + future 2nd for
Haywood, Florent 2025 first and 2026 first should be the deal imo.

The trade should be Charlie Curnow and only Charlie Curnow.

Clubs wants Charlie. He is all they should be getting from us.

We should have been in the window from a list perspective.
Unfortunately we completely botched it with the coaching and wasted 3 years and arrived late.
Wasn't botched coaching Stamos it was botched list build. For some bizarre reason there is this perception we completed our list build knowing this was not the case. Not going into to LDU over Dow, the guns we traded out of ahead of taking Stocker to be cool first live trade night, boring we ont go over old ground SPS L O'b etc.
We were as a club, able to gloss over the glaring list failures of the three key years post year 1 of Curnow, Harry, etal of our scorched earth rebuild that Stephen Silvagni as list manager got wrong and we did little to acknowledge it and aggressively fix it

I dont thing Voss has been great either but we never had the list to win a flag. A list on paper v a list on output are two very different things. The fact they didn't double down after 23 is a seperate mind bending decision but seperate to this.
Stephen Silvagni as a list manager was a forking disaster. So many holes to fill under Austin that was a huge task, which I also think Austin has not executed well on either.

Clearly had a better vision of where it needed to get to than Silvagni but hasn't executed aggressively enough either.
I don't thing people understand the magnitude of the change in impact from Cook / Lloyd to
GW / Davies. Time will tell but t his is as positive as I have been for a while.

Will update all once deflated misreading of the situation occurs....

Future 3rd and it’s close.

Give us 3 1sts this year and 2 next year to work with. Whether it’s stockpiling picks for next year, splitting them to get other deals done or getting a pick in ahead of the Dean bid would give us some flexibility.

We could either move up the order, move into next year or try to package some picks to get someone like Gruzewski for a slide in 1sts while maintaining points for Dean. Plenty of options.

As much as it would be great to get an elite player back, our issue is clearly depth, durability and quality of squad below our top end. If we trade Charlie it may be less about what we get directly in return from a player standpoint but more about how it allows us to build quality depth of squad and balance our cap spend.

I had this debate with another poster, this idea that top clubs pillage the bottom clubs of free agents isn’t true.
The majority of free agent moves are to lower clubs.
Not saying it can’t be improved and I don’t mind the idea of the receiving club having to give something, just some people seem to have made assumptions on not much evidence.

I really hope we are enquiring about Zac Bailey, if he leaves next year, the Lions will get a pick around 18, they need more picks this year and I assume cap space, after they spend big on two free agents.

He would be fantastic for us, if only we picked him instead of LOB

Its such a cop out for the new boss at the afl to allow Brisbane to get two father sons (1 of which had just won back to back norm smith’s) another top 4 pick via their academy and two elite/A grade talls while at the same time preventing Victorian teams like Carlton from ever catching up or bridging the gap due to new rules put in place to slow us down. We should still be complaining about the fs rule introduction in 2026. It’s absolutely ****ed. I’ll only consider not quitting this sport if we get gifted fair first round compensation for JSOS.

Apparently * going hard for him. 1.3M x 6 per Cal Twomey. Not sure if that's for this year or when he hits FA
