2025 List Management Discussion - Part 4

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

2025 KEY DATES
Free Agency Period:
Friday, October 3rd - Friday, October 10th
Trade Period: Monday, October 6th - Wednesday, October 15th
AFL Draft: Wednesday, November 19th - Thursday, November 20th

Anyone else think it’s absolutely ****ed that Melbourne have leaked a story to Journos about a chat with Oliver and a role change and he find a new club if unhappy?

I kinda feel sorry for the guy here.

if you look at it in isolation sure

but the guy has form and the reason he's in this position is he didnt show his club, that showed massive faith in him, enough respect

he's ****ed around and found out

And why would Bartel be so well suited to that role?
Seemed to be setting it up on Football Furnace last night.
Adelaide were after him, couldn't move because of family and kids at school, then said he was keen to look at opportunities in Melbourne.

In very simple terms - there’s a stoppage, the ball is cleared and the next contest after that is called a post clearance possession. Doesn’t sound right at all to me that we’d be pitching that to him. For comparison sake Owens always rates very highly in that area.
Depends what the type of clearance looks like.

I think we'd be fed up with being a 'dump kick heavy' clearance team (one of Marshall's attributes), which is why Owens is so valued because he brings that ball to ground every time.

I think Flanders is a really clean footballer who could play around the likes of Steele/Phillipou/Windhager who will be on the inside and contesting and then work laterally to find a short-kick target so we don't cough up the footy and get rebounded on.

Hopefully we don't even use him in that role as every clearance is just TDK putting it straight down Nas' throat, two bounces and launching from 50.

no no no no no no, as toxic as they come, don't let her anywhere near the place, and that's not just gossip

Ross is here till the end of '27 at the minimum, I see '27 as our real push year, kids hitting the 4-6 year bracket. Only way I see him going is if we bomb out.

on Mission, it's a good time imo, but we must push for a club-appointed GM and not a Ross-appointed GM. One of the 3 most important jobs in a footy club. We can't get sucked into the now and forget about the future and repeat post-2012.
I said I’m happy to look at her mate. Not strike up a conversation or buy her crap 😂

I've got nothing but praise for Ollie. A couple of years ago, he happily caught up with me for a coffee in Adelaide to chat about his pathway into the industry and everything else in-between.

As mentioned, Dan Does Footy is arguably the most influential football show amongst the younger demographics and having Ollie as a co-host has done wonders for our club's perception.

Beforehand, majority of neutrals couldn't give a stuff about the Saints. But now, I can feel that tide is slowly starting to turn and there are becoming more soft spots for the club.
I am unsure if I should say this. But the only time I've seen Ollie is at the B&F.
Same person?
So to catch up. He's doing the podcast. Did the Saints employ him?

Can’t imagine he has a huge say in things between: Ross, SOS, Gubby, Dalrymple
For a bloke like Bartel, being the GM of Football in a Saints Premiership year would look amazing on the Resume.

A lot of the work has been done and I’d assume the role would be tailored to allow a transition of greater responsibility over time.

For someone doing the gig for the first time it would be very appealing. Easing into it, not overwhelmed initially and working with seasoned professionals.

And the next senior coach being a good mate.

This really brings home the vibe we are up against. Interstate sides can always point to the Melbourne Magnet like a sort of gravity pull - they will always be in orbit. So it’s Melbourne Teams vs Us - yet us is not one entity and has strong and weak parts. We just have to be a strong part of it - a higher standard ! Big challenge ! But we are having a shot!

Ross is always talking up Geelong. Should be no surprise if we end up with Bartel with Enright already in the wings.

So Nas not only got rid of the coach, but three of their best players as well.

That game is the gift that keeps on giving, watched the last quarter again last night 😀
Except for the last minute, I havent seen it yet. Ill get to it. Im still have jet lag a bit.

My only hesitation with bringing all new recruits in means the games played together plummets.
There was a really good research paper done by a hawthorn employee during their premiership years that had the basis of; the more games played a group has together the higher chance of success.
I forget who authored it so can’t credit but it was a fascinating read.
Cohesion is the word.

We might be thinking of the same article (Gain Line Analytics) but I recall reading one which referenced the All Blacks and how they would choose players often alongside teammates, on the same playing line, from the same provincial side.

The article was claiming cohesion & retention % as the biggest keys to sporting success in various teams across many sports. They do have a particular focus on Union though.

Ahahahahaahahahahah

Gosh, remember just post the 21’ flag. He was 24 and a total star. With Petraccca and Gawn by his side. Kid had it MADE.

1 year later I’m in Europe and talking to some Aussie girl spilling the tea on how insane his off field his behaviours are. 6 months after that the media goes all out on him. Today his club are going to pay 700k off his contract just to ship him off.

If I was a demons fan, I would thank the Gods every single ****ing day for that 21’ flag. Every single day. They looked a promised dynasty.
