So many other things to judge him on. His sloppy chassis doesn’t fill me with confidence he will keep himself going for another five years

What about the pics when his party red hair is sweaty and matted?

He looks like a clown-villain from the real Stephen King

It’s the length of contract that’s the deal breaker for me. He’s no longer the player he was, and at 28, five years is too long.
Five years ago people were saying Tex was cooked too and then he went and turned in to an AA player. He’s young enough that he can turn things around, his age shouldn’t be holing him back at this point.

Even if we have to carry Oliver for the last 1-2 years of his contract, at $600k that’s not overly prohibitive. We’ve been paying that much for the last 5 years to have Treloar and Grundy play against us. It’s a medium risk high reward play and I think we probably need to take a few risks to stay contenders at this point given our poor draft hand.

There’s a key difference in the two. Beamer cost us 1st’s x 2 and Oliver will be lucky to get the Dees a pick in the 30’s. The risk is the salary and I’d make the Elliott comparison. The two will be on the same coin and it seems universally accepted that Elliott was good value…
Sure - the 1sts were what pick 16 and 18, because he was in better recent form.

The salary itself ain't a risk based on reports - if Dees are on the hook for a large chunk year it means Pies would pay 600-700k - which is Dan McStay style cash. The length is the issue.

The Beams beware comparison was about bringing a gun 28-29 yr old midfielder with baggage in and it not working out...we are stuck with Clarry for 5 years.

Without knowing any real detail (just the public stuff) re Clarry, I would roll the dice, need to take some risks if you want to get the reward of a flag.

With Oliver and others like him, they are human. Anyone been in a job or workplace where you feel burnt out, stale, dealing with flog coworkers or managers and needed a change?

And then go to a new job where you feel rejuvenated & ready to go again? People writing off 28 year olds like they’re done & dusted is funny to me.

Compare Jeremy Cameron’s last season at the Giants vs his career at Geelong. Anyway, just a thought. People can change.

Humphrey is a gun and I’d love for him to play for us but how on Earth could we ever satisfy GC from a trade perspective?
The great thing is, we don’t need to solve this - the does

I doubt we would have chased Rowell so hard and no Humphrey if there isn’t a way.
We may not like it but there’s a way

Shout out to Pragmatic Shill for calling this early
I was happy then and happier now

Too great a risk for me.

As opposed to Elliott’s nonexistent injury history & gamestyle?
Elliott is at the peak of his powers.
Oliver isn’t.
Is he worth a five year investment at $700k per year?
I say no.

Elliott is on two years, Oliver would be on five. And before you mention his younger age, Oliver has fitness and lifestyle challenges that make that five years very risky.
Both have elements of risk. Elliott’s deal will be 3 years with triggers for the 3rd. We’re just more prepared to embrace the Elliott risk because he’s a club favourite and his age risk is more palatable than Oliver’s off field.

FWIW I’m not a yes. I’m a maybe on the basis that the club think he can re-tool from all go no woah to a lot of go and a little woah. Long had a good season, but his numbers pale in comparison to what was a “bad” year from Oliver. We’re a territory team and bringing in the best clearance player of the past decade at little trade cost and an average salary needs heavy scrutiny at the very least.

700k for clarry the footballer is a bargain, 700k for clarry the finger painter is pretty expensive. You’d want to be sure which version you’re getting, cos you’re stuck with it for 5 years.
This.

It is more complex than the Grundy / Treloar salary dumps, as Grundy / Treloar both good citizens with no off-field clouds around them.

And yes Clarry is "only" 28, but if he isn't mentally focused, dedicated and professional he will be done in a couple of seasons.

Long term contracts striking again...player (and player manager) win, whilst the club cops all the risk.

It’s odd that Melbourne would tell the best clearance player of the past decade that he’s not needed.

Geelong gave up three first round picks for Cameron!

The only way you accept this risk is if it comes with a first round pick. A young gun can offset 700k sitting in the VFL air not playing at all.

There is a Beams risk with this, it cost us big time. The lack of due diligence was a disaster.
