I think he's a chance as back up ruck.
Im happy to keep him as back up ruck. Buller is an unknown ( to me anyway ) ruck commodity and anyone who watched a single VFL game would be aware Cox has young Steene covered as a ruckman by a considerable margin.
If we could find an adequate back up ruck for next to zero draft capital, maybe a Soldo type, then all well and good. Cox would also be a close to minimum salary.

Going into a season with DC, Buller, Steene and Frampton just isn't going to do it

AFL are so desperate for their pet project to work - they’ll bend the rules to make it happen.
Has there been any confirmation that Gold Coast have the same salary cap as other teams, or is it just a question no-one has asked?

Same for any northern expansion team really.

Interesting point you made about Oliver's kicking/ disposal. 14.7% of his disposals this year are direct turnovers. Did you know that 17% of Josh Daicos' possessions for this year resulted in direct turnover? 66% of Josh's disposals were uncontested. 47% of Oliver's possessions were contested. Oliver's skills are nowhere near the worst in the AFL. They are not even worst for midfielders.

Stats can be a bit misleading. A lot of elite kicks have a high turnover rate as they are more attacking in the way the kick the ball. The Daicos boys are both very aggressive when they kick. The issue with Oliver over the last couple of years are not the clangers is the other 85% that don’t really hurt the opposition. Eg handballs and kicks that are considered effective but don’t really put his side in a better position.

For Oliver to be worth it he’d need to go back to being a clearance bull who gives it off to more attacking and effective ball users.

This topic just shows how silly people on here are.

The same was literally said about Tom Mitchell when he came up at the end of 2022.

They literally did what you would do if you wanted a player to leave but didn’t want to lose bargaining power.

They did this for both Petracca and Oliver.

Petracca had takers, Oliver didn’t, which is why now, 6 weeks after their season ended (not at exit meetings) they are pushing oliver out with a salary dump.
Your made up fantasy is cute

Yep. Plus I'd be willing to bet a much higher percentage of Josh's possessions are kickscompared to Clarry.

I think you are mistaken in this case. You don't let a 1.4 million dollar star asset "assess his options" unless you want them gone. And clubs now know this in addition the lingering bad blood from last year. There is no universe where demons will get a deal beneficial once the player is half way out the door. Melbourne are not standing in his way so therefore will not get a great deal. Semantic trade week gobblydy gook about being happy to let him chat to teams or else be happy to have him back is complete and utter crap and rings hollow. You also don't lead negotiations from a position of weakness. They don't want him anymore which is clear reading between the lines. He will be at another club and they'll take unders to get his contract off their books. Unlike Humphrey who would fetch a premium as it is clear Gold coast do not want to lose him.
Petracca wanted out last year and Melbourne refused, hoping they could mend bridges. That didn’t happen so they’re letting him walk knowing they can get good currency. It’s a far cry from Oliver who they’re pushing out. I can guarantee that the demons will walk away likely with something like Flanders and a decent pick for Trac, since they made it very clear that they would trade him “if a suitable deal” could be reached. It also explains why Trac has gone from wanting to go to a Melbourne based powerhouse club, to Adelaide or GC. His management have identified clubs that can get a deal done.

Sure but if you’ve got access to advanced stats I would love to see i50 kick retention rates for both players, I imagine that would paint a different picture.

But beyond stats, here’s something that stands out to me like a sore thumb:

R13 Dees vs Pies, a few minutes to go, Melbourne is about to run over us and pinch the win, until Oliver going forward with low to no pressure executes one of the worst kicks you’ll see and send the ball OOB. We move the ball to their d50 and win the game.

Now you might say that’s just one example. Fast forward to the Dees vs Saints game the following month, there’s a few minutes to go and the Dees are about to win a close one, until yet again Oliver executes one of the worst kicks of the year at a crucial time and the rest is history.

Oliver is 100% a player you want to ask to handball first at all costs and dish it out to others for the kick. Problem is we already have one of those in Long so despite his strengths on the inside I’m not sure it’s who we want if the price isn’t heavily tilted in our favour in salary and pick.
