don't think it's a full-blown push out - he stepped down from the captaincy himself - but a "feel free to look elsewhere if you want confirmed minutes" which is implicitly a nudge

honestly think he stays and possibly goes for immediate overdue surgeries or something (if he needs them, got no idea if anything is currently plaging him but he clearly cooked himself by playing through injuries in the last two years to be a captain), but i wouldn't begrude him at all if he decides to go. I'm sure stepping down as captain was a shit enough convo.

Didnt realise this but sounds like he ruled out WCE fairly instantly

h

He probably only wants to go to a team in finals (like marshall) but I'm not sure a finals team would take him.

It's not a full blown push out, it's a 'we owe you a lot of money over the next 2 years and we'd rather not pay you to play VFL because you may not be in our best team anymore...so if you are able to get someone else to take that on...we are in no way going to stop you leaving.'

So it's more a 'maybe leave? Mmm that'd be nice...' rather than an Adam Treloar style 'Contract?! Nooo, no money here, please clear out locker, are you still here?!'.

Might take him a few days for him to get his head around that.

I think it's taken him by surprise and the initial reaction of 'oh no thanks, I'm good, happy to stay and keep playing here' may give way to the sobering reality that the club would rather he found another opportunity (why else would they plant that seed and make it public?

Has he playing with niggles? Has he dropped off in output this season or have the moved him out of his normal position to accommodate for younger kids?

He has played with injuries at times (neck this year) and his output has dropped.

He was averaging half a goal per game and nearly 30 touches in his prime now he's down to around 20 touches and almost no goals.

Still a wonderful tackling player.

Pretty sad way to treat a loyal servant and captain of the club who has done the hard yards when the club has been trash. And there’s been no suggestion of attitude or culture issues because by him.

I’d hate it if my club did this.
Completely agree

Correct. Not sure what else the club can do in this instance. Unlike McRae, they let him know in advance where he stood going forward.

The game has moved on from Jack, sadly. I get the sentimentality involved, but the club needs to move forward. Not the first club to do this, nor will we be the last.

The reality now is that we have Flanders coming in plus our kids starting to step up. Windy takes his spot.

Does pushing Steele out mean they are giving more midfield minutes to Macrae? That would be a backwards decision if that were the case.

Macrae looked well and truly on the outer in the last part of the season.

It'll be minutes to Flanders, Philippou, Garcia, Windhager and Boxshall. Macrae was being scaled back even towards the end of last year

He wasn't the same after puncturing his lung.

Yes. This is exactly how I read it too.
Plenty of other people are jumping to conclusions assuming it’s the Treloar method.

Completely bizarre that people think we should still run Steele in the midfield when his output has clearly been on the decline for a few years now.

ALSO, Steele himself asked to step down from the captaincy.

Got to be able to hang shit on us somehow/somewhere.

Personally I hope he stays but he’ll be overtaken by the younguns this year.

All year neutrals have been saying he's cooked but as soon as we look to trade him: culture killer, how could you do that to your captain etc. Bigfooty nuffy things.

Short memories that's exactly what Clarkson did to Sam Mitchell...

Clarkson didn't strip Mitchell of captaincy nor did he tap him on the shoulder. Mitchell made the call to pass the baton on.

It was part of an understanding between Mitchell and Hodge that the baton will be passed at some point. They explored the idea of co-captains in 2008 but did not go ahead with this.
