After a challenging couple of seasons marred by injury and a lack of continuity, premiership Demon Charlie Spargo said the time was right to seek a "fresh start".

Spargo officially joined North Melbourne as an unrestricted free agent on Monday after 108 games for the Demons.

The 25-year-old played every game across 2021 and 2022, but has been restricted to just 25 senior appearances since then due to injury and opportunities.

"Given the really difficult last couple of years with not playing a lot of footy and sort of stagnating as a player a bit, I felt the best thing for me going forward as an individual was a fresh start, a new environment and new challenges," Spargo told Continental Tyres AFL Trade Radio.

"Given my last two years with injury, missing the whole of 2024 and a decent portion of this year, and struggling with continuity in my footy, the contract situation was stressing me out a little bit so I tried to put as much of my time and energy into footy, getting back, getting my body right, and playing as much as I could, and let my manager deal with that in the background."

The hard-running small forward played just one game after the mid-season break this season, struggling to break back into the Demons' side after overcoming an injury setback.

"Towards the end of the year I had come back from my last injury but I wasn't playing AFL. We'd been in constant talks with North throughout the year, and that’s when it sort of picked up," Spargo said.

"We had some really good open discussions with my manager, (Demons list boss) Tim Lamb, and (footy boss) Alan Richardson at Melbourne, and spoke to (Roos list boss) Brady Rawlings and some people at North Melbourne.

"We came to a decision that for both parties it was best for me to move on, and Melbourne were really appreciative of that."

Spargo confirmed on SEN that he has had a shoulder reco. The young blokes will be back for preseason on the 10/11 (he will get in early too) and the older boys on the 25th.

His Best is more than good enough to make us better. The question is if he can get back to that after injuries. From the sounds of things he is a hard working, team oriented that will be good to have around the club.
Seems like a nice guy.
