Re: 'Alleged' rumours resurfacing ...

Folks, this is the way things are here.

Posters are responsible for what they post. Moderators can not attest to the accuracy or otherwise of any rumour posted.

Moderators will intervene for a couple of reasons.

1. If a thread is threatening to be derailed because of a post.

2. If invested parties request the removal of material.

None of this draws a conclusion as to the accuracy or otherwise of the original post.

There is no need to further speculate. What will be will be.

Also, you need to remember that this thread like all parts of this forum is bound by the rules of poster conduct. If you want to express skepticism towards a rumour that's fine, but having a crack at posters who are contributors to this forum is simply not on and will be acted upon.

Simply put, don't be a dick.

Thanks all!

Apparently some clubs have asked about Jade Gresham.

Wouldn't be surprised if that's us. We are clearly into HFF types right now

Surprised there hasn't been more talk about him moving, given the rumours going around.

Wouldn't be opposed to bringing him in if it's for a nothing pick and Essendon are willing to pay a decent chunk of his salary.

Yeh but that just swings the power way too far the other way so it will never happen.
ATM clubs can ask players to leave and players can ask clubs to leave and neither can get what they want without the other agreeing.

Here's a radical idea.

Every draftee gets an 8-yr contract. Trades can only be initiated by clubs.

During the first 4 years, the club can trade the player to any other club, but cannot delist the player.
(This gives new players more surety and time in the league, but gives clubs the ability to move a young player on for maximum return)

During years 5-8 if a trade is initiated the player can specify a state, with their club then able to either secure a deal with a club in that state or, if no suitable deals are tabled, can elect to retain the player. Clubs can delist players from year 5 onwards, but the player gets a 6 month pay-out to assist with their transition back into real life.
(This gives players moderate agency early in their career to facilitate (in particular) moves back to their home state, but provides the clubs with the ability to secure a reasonable deal or retain the player based on their needs. The payout would sit outside the salary cap

From year 9 onwards, players attain free agency and can move to a club of their choice on a contract negotiated with said club. For the duration of that contract, if the club elects to initiate a trade then the player can nominate a club, and either a trade deal is reached with that club or they remain where they are.

As I said...radical. Would probably need some major work on how pay would be structured during years 1-8. But I reckon as a vague model it gives clubs suitable power, gives players security and scaling agency, and gives contracts appropriate value whereby a player who elects to sign a contract from Year 9 onwards is expected to abide by it - sign short term if you want flexibility, or long term if you want security, but you don't get both.

Whenever this thread hears about a possible trade for anyone even remotely approaching a big name, it goes nuts.
I'm constantly 15 pages behind, ploughing through every poster's carefully thought out permutations of what we should accept from Sydney for Charlie in a trade.

And then they insist on repeating themselves, just in case their point might have been overlooked.

Will never happen re: draftees whilst the AFL EBA is what it is. Both clubs and players have asked previously for some of the above, but AFL wont agree as the draftees pay would need to increase astronomically to get that over the line with the AFL Players and association.

Now ask yourself why we didn't get a flag, ney, we didn't even get close to a flag...

So why sell the farm for Butters now?

Look at the Carlton playing squad in 2008.

He's slow. We are obsessed with average speed forwards.
