Had a good look at him a few years ago when I drafted him in supercoach league and thought he was a clear standout in that North side as a pure mid. Not a bull like an Oliver which I think we could do with more but can extract the ball himself and is fairly evasive with ball in hand. Can also hit the scoreboard which is always handy.

If we planned on having Long + Oliver in the same side then Long + Simpkin is arguably a better mix.

He looked great in the all stars game, as a full timer I think he would be a solid pick-up. Just comes down to what we would pay.

I’m struggling to see how Geelong lose out of it? They get a 2 time Coleman medalist to pair with their other two time Coleman medalist for what likely amounts to a token price. What’s your rationale for them dropping away after adding Curnow to their already fantastic mix?
Mine is the absence of an opinion on how they will do in two or three years, as it's not something I've given sufficient thought to. So I'm not going to concoct a rationale for an absence of a view. In terms of the "now", I think Geelong have a very good side, to be sure.

My original reaction to the bid was more simple: Curnow will be 29 in Feb. He's a KPP with injury issues on his charts. He's also horseshit under big game pressure, but we could potentially blame Carlton for that infection. Three years of your first pick takes away your wiggle room for quite some time and it's not a deal I would be happy with prima facie. And if they turn out to be shit picks, then Carlton may well indeed be dudded too.

Anyway, it was just a passing thought. Stuff the lot of them.

The same people telling us it would be ok to get Simpkin for a future first, will be the same people in 12 months lamenting the fact that we don’t have any cap space or trade currency to get players of value.

We have a dearth of talented young players on the list, we should only be giving up 1st rounders or $900k+ contracts for top end talents.

Prefer we keep our powder dry for 12 months down the track.

Generally, the default assumption should be incompetence . And gubby has a track record to boot. Someone stuffed the numbers.

Expect us to pay high for Simpkin, like we did for Schulz. I'd expect we give a first rounder, and try to get something back , as roos don't need mediocre picks.

Something is up than just --they had no picks to give- excuse they are currently using.
They knew before this trade period the were getting TDK and Aleer. So they would have planned for this. With their offer for Aleer no way did they expect a Third or less would suffice.

Since then they’ve added silvagni on ridiculous $, upped their $ to Wilkie and added Flanders on god knows what $. IMO it’s pretty clear they’ve got no money left for Aleer now and they’ve basically f..ked him over.

Yeah, someone has cooked the books and realised, oops they can no longer afford Aleer with the price they convinced him of.
This excuse about not wanting to go into the 2027 F2 draft hand, seems just that - an excuse.
They wooed him for 2 years.. and then decided to get Silvagni as well, they didn't need both I wouldn't have thought.

Cats offered Worpel a reasonably modest 4yr contract, Hawks elected not to match and took end of 2nd round compo pick (39). Hawks supporters thanked him for his service and Cats supporters were happy enough without getting over the top excited.

Simpkin is about the same level of player in my mind as Worpel.

He has 4yrs to run on a contract. If we pay around the same amount as Cats paid for Worpel and coughed up a similar pick. I could get around that and be happy enough.

High salary and/ or high draft pick for him however, I just can't get my head around that. It would surely constrain us down the track for a bigger piece of the puzzle.

The more educated North supporters on their board have indicated Jy and his family are dye in the wool Pie supporters and his family were peeved when he signed his last contract wanting him to seek a trade to the Pies. The same educated supporters suggest a F1 + McCreery or IQ should get a deal done. A F1 on its own isn't enough b/c we will drop down next yr, but not far enough

We can give them a 2027 F2, we should have fallen off the cliff by then.

They also Liam Ryan from WCE today reportedly on good $$$ as well

Leadership, I think is suspect as probably the only downside. There was a period their when we were known as the best contested ball team in the league…north really took it to us, Simpkin was a reason.
I don't know much about his leadership, but he is captain.

I've no immediate aversion to Simpkin as I did for Oliver. As a ball winner he seems quite a good option.

I’m pretty certain Jy was a Dons fan growing up. Not sure about his family though.

Our last premiership side had Hill (Norm), Howe, Frampton, Markov, Lipinski, Cameron (Copeland), Mitchell, Crisp, Elliot and Hoskin Elliot in it. Only 10 players. We sure suck at trading/free agency! Since then we've added Schultz, Perryman and Houston... Get some perspective.
IIRC Jamie Elliott has only ever played for us despite being drafted by GWS who traded him before he played for them

No to Aleer please. We have a better version of him right now in Billy Frampton.

Simpkin with North paying $300k + a future second for a future first from us would be fair, similar to the Treloar trade except Treloar was a better player.

Simpkin is triggering any trade activity. He wants midfield time. A discount trade and salary would not be expected. Front/backended contract may change his reported salary. He may agree to take a cut to move but that is rare. This doesn’t appear to be a dump.
