still 32 picks more valuable than the 135 Carlton reluctantly gave up for Rhys Palmer

I didn't even realise Palmer played for Carlton.

What a fever dream.

Help me out here. He's 27. And in his last full season averaged 27 touches and polled 11 Brownlow votes.

Unless he's undergone an amputation, to get him for essentially nothing is well worth it.

If you watched him in the WAFL you'd see why he cannot get a game. Needs to work on his tank massively to get to more contests - is constantly 20 metres behind the play. Maybe a new environment and a massive preseason can fix him but it ain't working at the moment

Yes,
But as just a clearance mid, he's good. Would only play 60-70% game time when he played AFL. He will never get a proper AFL level tank.

I'm surprised a young rebuilding team hasn't pulled the trigger earlier as we were shopping him around last year too. Will do well at Port and seem like a bargain but needs to be played to his strengths to succeed.

You would think they could have got the trade out of the way with later picks

... so the question is why the hold up?
Because we really wanted to hold on to pick 103?

I thought the hold up was that we were trying to split Pick 103 into two eighth round picks so we’d only have to use one and keep the other.

Can’t believe we folded like an origami swan.

Seriously though, welcome Will Brodie, hope you get to give it your best shot.

Expectations need to be kept at a sensible level for Brodie. Playing two full seasons in the WAFL didn't produce a single top ten result in the WAFL B&F (Sandover Medal), which is not something I'd want to see out of an AFL level player in the grade down - Erasmus in 2024 played 4 AFL games with others as emergency and finished one best on ground game away from the medal himself.

Matt De Boer similarly played four AFL games in 2016 and finished second that year.
