You weren't asked for a first rounder straight up. You were asked for a 7 pick slideback, which is more like 4 picks once academy picks were matched.

Brisbane were incredibly reasonable.

When trading draft picks for the current year, recruiters would already have a pretty clear idea of who they would like to take and what positions they’re likely to fall in. They would also have a fair idea of what pick swaps they may consider doing at various times.

If the player/s you’re interested in has limited interests from the clubs around you, then sliding 4-5 spots is insignificant. But if the player/s you’re interested does have a lot of interest from clubs around you then that slide becomes really significant.

I would imagine, that if it was an insignificant slide, Reid would have done the deal. The fact that he didn’t, tells me they probably have some important plans for that pick.

So again, comes back to my original question. When in the past has a player of similar age, experience and ability been traded for anything involving first round picks?

Even this year, Jack Steele was traded for a third round pick. The Lions were being offered a better deal for Ah Chee than what the Saints accepted for Jack Steele.

2027 we have a loaded KPP academy crop, headlined by U16 AA B&F winner Jackson Bridge. Any picks we hold will be used for matching bids.

"Special" as in massive leg up in the draft lol. Then they should have asked for 2027 F2 and 3rd rounders this year for points if the 2026 F2 is useless to them, it definitely won't be useless to us.

We already have too many 3rd picks this year, that we can't take them all to the draft.

Asking a club to give up consecutive second rounders for Ah Chee would have been overs, based on precedents set.

I’ll give you some:

Steele for a 3rd rounder
St Kilda gave up pick 45 to get Macrae.
Carlton gave up pick 38 to get Matt Kennedy.

Brisbane can ask for more, but you can’t run around calling the other team unfair because they said no.

It’s especially hard to take from a club that has had so many more more advantages with list management than us.

You can check my posts in this thread if you like, I haven't said Ah Chee is more valuable purely because he's a two-time premiership player. I think he's valuable because he's a good quality player, and I said the same thing back in July.

And yes, I think Steele is a far worse player, Ah Chee absolutely left him for dead this year. I care more about what they've done lately than how good they were four years ago.

Ah Chee is better than all of them except perhaps Macrae, who by the end of his time at Bulldogs wasn't playing well so they couldn't really ask for much, and he was older when he moved.
