This thread is for the discussion of the sacking of a club mascot after refusing to participate in a bar mitzvah which was allegedly sending money back to the IDF.

By taking this position and labelling the act racist, the club has taken a position on the Israel-Palestine conflict.

This thread concerns a discussion of the following:
  • whether it is acceptable for the club to fire someone for taking a political stance.
  • whether it is a good idea for the club to have taken a public position on this issue.

This thread is not a thread in which you should partake in expressing your political beliefs concerning the conflict, nor is it somewhere in which forum rules do not apply.

Should you seek to participate in conversation related to the war, you can do so here:

There's also a thread on the SRP for a more robust discussion than can be permitted here:

If you wish to participate in this thread, do so knowing that this will not be allowed to escalate beyond a point.

Thanks all!

Wish he had gone quieter, now it can be argued he was fired for swearing and carrying on like a turkey around sensitive ears, or whatever.

No problem with his protest and walking out itself... just could have handled it better.

Equally the club should have been informed that the Bar Mitzvah was going to include fundraising for the IDF (not something you would normally expect at a religious coming of age event) and had a duty to tell its employee it was more than just a Bar Mitzvah event.

It doesn't excuse CC's behaviour and alleged response, but doesn't excuse the Club representatives at the event either if they knew and didn't inform the Club and CC.
It could also be as innocent as the MC asking the kid on question "so what are you gonna do with the money?" And the kid saying "I'm going to send it to the injured soldiers" all with the best of intentions, with the innocence of youth.

It may not have been a formal money raising event. Then again, it could also have been a money raising event dressed up as bah mitzvah.

I don't think that information has been released anywhere.

I'd love to know CC's version of events.

Yeah .. should've taken a bathroom break and excused himself .. then duck out the back door and do a runner.
The ol' Exit Stage left disappearing Act. Wouldn't be the first time a fella wearing a Carlton guernsey went missing

I think the club has dropped the ball in both speaking of expectations (no swearing at a kid's event),
Did he say it out loud to the room or under his breath to a colleague? I haven't read more than what's in here.

Of course it was directed at the kid. It was his decision.

That doesn't follow the comment was directed at the kid. It appears to be directed at the recipients of the money.

I have been to Bar and Bat mitzvahs and yes money is collected for the individual who then decides what they are going to do with it.
At no event that I have attended have any money been raised for anythingelse. The event is for the celebration of the individual turning 13.

The thing to do by both the kid and the parents would have been to have the Bar Mitzvah, and then make the decision on what to do with the money afterwards. Who knows... there might have been some attendees who would have been uncomfortable with the decision to give the money to wounded IDF soldiers. Why bring a political act into a celebration of coming of age.
