Faaaark! Not a name that crossed my mind.

But he has extensive experience in different football roles and is coming back to SA.

Why would Carr sign off on the GM role?

Seems like a decision completely out of his lane

Carr and Dew have talked about a strong connection between the footy department and footy admin roles.

I can't speak for Chewy, but I would expect they would appoint someone Carr and the other coaches can work with, so would at least have had input if not ultimate sign-off.

Your footy GM and HC need to be joined at the hip, in complete alignment.

This x100000.

Wish him well in the role. He has experienced the highs and lows. Wiki has all the important background info listed- Rutten gave away the game-deciding free kick in the 2009 semi-final by holding the arm of Collingwood forward Jack Anthony who scored Collingwood's winning goal in the last 55 seconds, which ended Adelaide's season.
The old Ben Rutten handshake

Don't think it matters what I know or when I know it, tbh.

Bottom line is that they clearly wanted Bartel, who rebuffed them on personal grounds, and have pivoted. Whether this is the right move is anyone's guess at this point. He has no administrative experience and all of his recent time involved in the league has been as a coach. And I have strong reservations about the appointment given the level of involvement our Club's CEO had in the decision making process.

That being said, this is a move that would have been signed off by both Carr and Cripps, which is a start.

At the very least, I look forward to Rowey having conniptions on 5AA discussing this appointment.
“conniptions” another new word for the day. Meaning having rage or hysterics, yes Rowey will be losing it. lol

I imagine cRowie will have him on AA tonight and we might get some idea of Rutten's thoughts once cRowie gets past "Why Truck why?"

His Wikipedia page still hasn't been updated. Crom supporters still shaking with rage too much to type.

A bit of an underwhelming CV really, mostly on the football admin side of things. I kid of always liked the guy so no issues with him being a "crows great". Just not a great appointment at face value but he might surprise us.

Wasn't there a lot of criticism of how close Davies and Hinkley were?

I have no doubt this will be different. I'm hoping the connection between both will be professional and accountable.

What credentials does he have from a football administrative standpoint?
Surely there are better and more highly credentialed people out there.

Im guessing Port only have a small budget for this
$400k less you'd expect their budget to be, thanks to Lolly Tooth.

Rutten is:
a) an ex footballer
b) an ex coach
c) experienced in a variety of roles in various AFL clubs
d) a good communicator

Sounds like a good fit for me.

Our last guy was a state level cricketer with an underbite.
