As part of Tasmania’s list concessions, there will be two 17 year old mini drafts, similar to the last mini draft afforded to GWS in 2012. Tasmania will be given two picks in each mini draft, which must be traded to other clubs.

Based on precedent, to be eligible to nominate for the mini-draft, players would need to turn 17 between January 1 and April 30 of the same year. These players would normally be eligible and nominate for the following year’s national draft as 18 year olds.

There is no confirmation that the mini drafts will be held in 2026 and 2027. I will post when officially confirmed.

You’d think the Eagles would be going hard at these boys. Any rule against both mini draft picks going to the Eagles? Wouldn’t blame them for wanting to trade 27 and 28 F1 for Walsh and Abbonizio

If WCE can satisfy Tasmania we can get both picks, they may be keen to also trade their pick 5 or 9 from the 2027 draft as they are obligated to do eventually.

That package would probably cost 2027 1R, 2028 1R and well as an established good player, most likely a tall.

They can take pretty much anyone bar a handful in a trade imo.

Untouchables for me:

Ginbey, Hough
Harley, Hewett, McCarthy
Baker, Waterman, Shanahan, A Reid

Probably playing pretty loose with that but some guys that could be made available are probably fella's like Maric, Graham, Flynn, J Wil, Cole, etc.

I dont think they need a mini draft. It will make existing supporters of clubs in Tasmania resent the team, not support it.
Tassie won't be good until initial draft class are 4th years, like GwS in 2015 who probably make finals that year if Mumford wasn't injured.

Why would Tasmanian club supporters resent the team because of a mini draft?

I think it affected GWS. They got such generous draft picks, supporters of Melbourne clubs living in Sydney have mainly refused to support them, or encouraged their kids to. I might be wrong in this though.

So just spitballing here but could Essendon trade for the number 1 pick in this mini draft and then get Bewick to nominate?
Going by precedent mini draft wont be their first draft, so 2028 not 2027. Also, it involves rights to the player a year before they are draftable. So most likely 2029 eligible players who rights can get bought in 2028. Even if it was in 2027, it'd involve 2028 eligible players.

Long story short. Wont be bewick.

Id be very afl to pitch a bunch if list concessions to the clubs, get them OK'd, then throw this in after.

Ahh ok. Yep that makes sense.

Essendon will be targeting some of those early picks from Tassie they need to trade you would think.
