But i dont get why they wanted to cave in the first place?
Coz they wanted the shutdown to end and believed it had gone on long enough, were skeptical of their party's strategy, thought it wasn't working and are Republican-lite type reps who don't subscribe to the idea that healthcare cost increases of 3-400% for the citizenry are a solid red line.

If there is one thing that has been pretty apparent among the Dem base its that they're crying out for leaders willing to fight Trump and his agenda rather than just lay down and take it. Dem leadership this year have basically thrown their hands up and said what can we do, Repubs control both bodies of congress. They finally, for the first time in Trump's 2nd term, had some leverage, an issue perfectly exposing just how little Trump cares about the people who voted him in... and their move is to cave just when the pressure on him is reaching its peak.

Embarrassing stuff.

Incoherent and rambling Trump demands the deployment of the US military to defend a shopping mall that doesn't exist!

Confused Trump, 79, Demands Troop Deployment Over Fictional Shopping Center

There is no “Miracle Mile Shopping Center” in Illinois’ largest city. While there are shopping districts with that name in California, Florida, New York, Nevada, and Pennsylvania, it would not appear the president plans to stage a military intervention in Chicago by dispatching personnel to other cities between 800 and 2,000 miles away.

Is it your position that Britain should be sharing the information?

the point of my post is that they share with israel but they gain a conscience with the US. It probably indicates who are their political masters.

Britain are subservient to Israel?

Mutual obligations sure but not subservient

I don't think your analogy stands up

Mutual obligations start at sharing of sensitive national issues

Comparing it to not giving info so a boat can be blown up is well down the list of national issues

I guess there’s an argument that Israel has a bunch of hostages in captivity.

Weak but something.

The US is just political grandstanding purely to distract from the economic woes.

that's an interesting perspective on britain possibly assisting israel to bomb palestinians...

It seems that concerns have been expressed regarding sharing information with israel but the gov't has ignored them

still would have liked to see more fight from the dems. they had the republicans on the run imo.

"To understand what happened in Washington on Sunday night, you must recognize one immutable fact: the president was never going to negotiate. This is a game to him. The suffering of the citizenry is just part of his playbook."

This is peak scum journalism. Cutting up hour long speeches to create fake quotes is disgusting behaviour. Love or Hate Trump this behavior is beyond poor.

Yeah it's crazy. Why bother to go to all that trouble to sully the reputation of a man who already has fully earned a reputation as one of the lowest, meanest, most duplicitous. lying, cheating, sexually assaulting, hypocritical, hateful pieces of excrement that has ever walked the earth?

I'm no fan at all of The Donald, nor of conservatism as a political movement in general. But the BBC, in misrepresenting Trump's Jan 06 speech, have done a grave disservice to journalism at large.

Was it deliberate? Did someone plant this 'media bomb' with the full intent it would eventually explode? This is just me speculating but I'd imagine UK conservatives would want the BBC privatised every bit as much as Australian conservatives want our ABC and SBS to pass into private ownership.

This, this is only going to help those who want the Beeb in private hands. Trump might have solid grounds for a defamation lawsuit

For f*ck's sake, eh?
It's a rookie error, but journalism rarely reports verbatim and quotes from different parts of a conversation are often run together. The mistake was not having an obvious cut to show it wasn't sequential. But let's not pretend that what was ultimately produced wasn't a closer reflection of reality than what he is claiming. He absolutely encouraged people to march on the capital, his language was incendiary, and any comments about peaceful protest were short and half-hearted.

Yes, it's poor form especially from a previously revered publicly owned news organisation.

But you'd have to have been living in a cocoon for the past 30 years to think that splicing and rehashing speeches and quoting them out of context is something new. Heck it's the foundation of the Murdoch Media empire.

What is different here though is that the BBC has actually taken ownership of this blunder and sacked the person at the very top of the organisation as a result.

Good luck with getting that level of accountability from Trump's besties in Fox News.

Don't fall for this one either, talk about a storm in a teacup. Its not some unprecedented injustice just coz Donnie says so.

Shit journalism for sure, but Fox News and other compliant right wing orgs in the US operate like this every single day.
It's not that I'm 'falling for it', more that I think that it point blank should not happen. It may be horribly naive in this Post-Truth world of ours but I still believe that our media - when delivering news and not just editorialising - must be held to a certain standard. Truth and integrity must stand above all else.

Control the media. Control the mind?

I don't disagree with the principle, its just not the world we live in.

Trump complaining about this is hilarious considering the media orgs that support him operate in exactly the same dishonest way for his benefit, daily, and have ever since he's been on the political scene. Oh but one instance from the BBC is some egregious injustice, just lol :drunk:

Bit surprising from the BBC true enough, but just a bit sick of the left being expected to be the adults in the room and play by the rules while the right can behave as unscrupulously as they like with no accountability whatsoever.

look at the number of times the media has presented the lies told by Donald Trump in full context and nothing happens.

Murdoch hack is responsible for this mess taking off.

IMO Trump is responsible for J6 and nothing will change my mind. Clear evidence is the number of Republicans and conservative media types (looking at you Scott Jennings) who didn’t want to touch Trump with a 40 foot pole.
I was home that day watching it all unfold live on television. He clearly incited the mob by instructing them to march to the Capitol and “fight, fight, fight or you’re not going to have a country left!” And a lot more. Rudy’s speech mentioning trial by combat didn’t do much to de-escalate the situation either.

While telling them that he’d be right there with them, before scurrying back to his foxhole, to watch on television and dance like an idiot.

Oh, I 100% agree. Fox News and Sky News are to a large extent conservative opinion/editorial channels masquerading as news. Even though privately owned, if they want to use 'news' at all in their operational titles they need to be made hold to at least minimum standards of journalistic integrity.
