The question is can the player fit into our best 23 in three to four years.

If the answer is yes for Thredgold, the club has already given up on three of Draper, Davies, Murphy and Nicholls. That'd be quite concerning tbh.

Whenever we overlooked talls for smalls and this board ranted about it there was always a way of fitting that player into the best 23 in three years time without writing off around a third of our picks in the previous three drafts.
Nicholls is more a forward isn't he?

Regardless, I'd be developing him as a defender/swingman.

There are question marks over all of Draper, Davies and Murphy, and it would be madness to keep them all if Thredgold was added. Time to step up!

I would really like a winger - we have a poverty of wingers.

We do, however, have a couple of defenders who could turn into v good wingers if Longmuir ever decided to think outside the box. Taking about Chapman, Simpson and McVee.

If Walls thinks Thredgold is the best available and he releases one of the above to play on the centre then why the hell not.

However my choice , realistically, would be NHH. Looks a natural footballer.
Yes agree. Wing/forward.

Nairn may be available and I would grab him if he is.

I hope we get Williams out of that lot but which one would be least likely to get matched? Addinsall?
It's all speculation but you'd think Carmichael, Kyle or Addinsall might slip through to us given how many acadamy selections both Sydney and Gold Coast have ahead of both of them. Of the three I like Kyle the least. Low football iq, poor ball drop, great athlete, very much a long term project player.

I reckon we could count the amount of 1st-3rd year KPDs better than Draper on one hand.

Short of drafting a KPD with a top five pick that plays every game there's always going to be question marks this early.

Drafting an absolute ****tonne of one type of player isn't the answer and never has been.

Also I think Nicholls will stay forward until we've decided that two of the others aren't up to it.

I think drafting a KPD with our highest pick, should see our entire list management team sacked

Tbh guys think we're putting too much emphasis on just one of the phantom drafts.

Think if you'd looked at our best 23 you'd see Pearce as one of the oldest, a Tasmanian and OOC in 2027. If you completely ignore our drafting history over the last three years KPD makes sense.

Thing is though David Walls won't be ignoring our recent drafting history. Don't think he's stupid enough to draft a KPD with our first pick just because they're best available.

This scenario is completely different to when we overlooked talls for smalls around ten years ago.

Yeah. Maybe.

It has been evident from the start the club doesn't rate this draft.

I don't see much point in bringing in Tom North or Mitch Crowden standard players if you actually have the option of a genuine best 23 prospect.

I would give Draper more time, but the club may be ready to make the call on Davies and Murphy. I think both are out of contract end of next season.

Last time I heard of Freo having an interest in a player another team was really interested in taking it was to stop those teams trading back for the player, allowing another side in to poach who we actually wanted (Young).

So perhaps it's just scuttlebutt to agitate a trade out of Gold Coast to move our pick up or to land a better second pick in exchange for not bidding.

We also have O'Driscoll.

I think we seem to undervalue the position as a club. We seem to specialise in mediocre wingers
It might be our gameplan to some degree. I remember one game where Sharp ran 16 km and had four touches. It may not be all him or the wingers. JL said we are going to change the way we play, so that might be interesting.

Think Davies would stack up very well if he wasn't already behind too many KPDs.

We haven't really seen much of him at AFL level but he's probably the best KPD in the WAFL outside of those on our list. The club will know if it'll translate but he's behind McDonald and Draper for now.

Think people on here want to write him off just because he's nowhere near best 23. But no other club has two KPDs like McDonald and Draper sitting outside their best 23.

Think Murphy's development is already suffering from being behind too many and players like McDonald, Draper and Davies usually playing the main KPD roles at WAFL level.

McDonald and Draper both have some positional flexibility which is a big advantage.

Yep, can see a scenario where OMac plays forward for Peel then comes into the AFL side as a key back when Pearce is injured.
It was a subtle shift, but last year Cox took on the role of fullback even when Pearce came back into the team. Not sure if they persist with it, but it does make replacing Pearce easier if it’s the second KPF that needs to be covered, instead of the main target.

Are there any players with poor ball drops who can kick to a high standard at AFL level?

Kyle gives me O'Driscoll vibes, rather than the Callaghan comparison that has been made by some.

Code Sports has called us "Bidmantle". Reckons the mail is we will bid on Adam Sweid (Essendon), Jack Ison (Carlton), Harry Kyle (Sydney), Lachie Carmichael (Sydney), Beau Addinsall (Gold Coast) and Tylah Williams (West Coast). Also reckons there is a good chance we land one of them.
Any one of those players at our first pick would be good (provided Dovaston is off the table)

I thought Luke Mc Parkin was drafted as a forward.
Unfortunately I was born long before he was drafted.
He famously played one game of Colts as a forward for East Fremantle under the name Clint Hopkins, at the behest of Hawthorn's recruitment manager John Turnball, so he could be drafted.

He kicked 8 goals by 3 quarter time and had to be dragged off so other clubs wouldnt realise what a gun he was off.

So you'd be right.

There was a real Clint Hopkins. I think Mr Hopkins was just the late withdrawal from the team list for Luke to get that game.

Sliding doors. Had Clint Hopkins played he may have been drafted and we may have never heard of Luke McPharlin.
