Carlton, Essendon, North - the triumvirate of mediocrity

17 from their last 25.

A better record than many teams have had for a long, long time.

But stop diverting, this thread isn't about Collingwood.

Carlton's list has gone backwards after a 9 win season despite having the easiest draw in the comp.

After more than 2 decades of building and rebuilding. That is relevant to the thread.
In your opinion it has

There is no doubt about the fact that objectively, Carlton's list has gone backwards again heading into 2026.

Out:
Curnow
TDK
Silvagni
Docherty
Durdin
Fantasia
E. Hollands
Cincotta

In:
Ainsworth
Hayward
Florent
Chesser
Reidy

Only deluded bias stands in the way of someone not acknowledging that fact.

I see 3 major losses and 3 major ins. The rest aren't really needle movers.

And E.Hollands isn't definitively lost to us just yet.

So Ainsworth, Hayward and Florent replace Curnow, TDK and Silvagni?

Despite Carlton receiving 2 of those players, plus draft picks, in exchange for Curnow?

Oh boy.

LOLOLOL.

It's all about prime time fixtures now and not actual results.

North have played in more Preliminary Finals and have 'won' fewer spoons than Carlton this century.

Carlton have finished 13th or lower 12 times this century, North 10 times.

Carlton's median ladder position finish this century is 11th, North's is 10th.

Both teams have won 5 finals this century.

Is there any objective on field performance based metric this century where Carlton are ahead of North Melbourne, because I can't seem to find one.

Case closed.

think blues took a long time to recover from the draft penalties and get our house in order (currently top 4)

think dons took a long time to recover from drug penalties and get their house in order (currently top 4)

kangas is a lack of money. never really got penalised so just kind of an underresourced club getting by on handouts
Those (currently top 4) caveats have aged wonderfully

25 year timeframe, these three teams are the epitome of mediocre: "of moderate or low quality". Okay, maybe Carlton veer into "shit", but I think we can parse that as mediocre.

This century was nominated as the time period in this thread.

There it is in black and white.

Essendon are tremendously mediocre. The very definition of it.

North and Carlton are nowhere near mediocrity. They're absolute trash. They sit above only an expansion club that is still recovering from the most incredibly mismanaged mess of a formation imaginable.

The bottom four are actually cut adrift by a fair margin - but at least Melbourne won the ultimate - a flag. And Gold Coast are obviously an exception. North and Carlton are simply a disaster.

Carlton 9

Solid debunk bunk

The OP has spoken, it's this century.

But congratulations on having performed better than a team that has averaged 3 wins a year over the last 4 years, at a time when your own team has had the best 4 year period we've seen from Carlton this century.

👏 👏 👏

Yep and finished above Collingwood last year as well, we've strengthened our list have heaps of 1st round picks and one of the best players in each of the next two drafts and add Jagger Smith as well, you'd want to be on Carlton in 26 and beyond.
