I like how he is considered a small forward but he's actually 6 foot tall so a decent height. If you look at it as an upgrade to Spargo he's quick and 9cm taller.

Pretty funny that some supporters are whining we took him too high when he was going to go in the next few picks anyway. Certainly was going to go before pick 20.

This is a savvy pick, not just because he looks like a handy player, but he will give Kozzy a sense of family and make him (and Latrelle) much less likely to seek a trade back home in the future. They might have a synergistic effect of raising them both to a higher level if they really enjoy playing together. Maybe a Phil/Jim Krakour effect.

Is Latrelle a cousin of Kozzie in the sense most non-indigenous use cousin, or in the First Nation tribal sense?

You mean the same way Clarry and Trac had a long contract? It's important to keep players happy - regardless of their contract length. Contracts mean nothing if players get homesick or unhappy. Especially your stars. If we keep Kozzy happy and feeling supported, that's a good thing. Same for Latrelle if he turns out to be a good player for us.

totally different. we got rid of them. Both were toxic to culture. Kozzie hasn't shown anything like that.

Unfortunately dan is right though, what he is saying is that Kozzys contract is so big that he doesn't really have any leverage to try and leave, and he isn't the type of guy to force his way out. Genuinely think we drafted Latrelle due to the need, and Kozzys connection is just a bonus. Latrelle was expected to go late first round in quite a few mocks, it isn't like we picked a bloke ranked 80 with a first round pick.

They are related, don't think they are first cousins, but not sure what the exact family tree is.

Five years might be the difference between Latrelle and Kysaiah but they are extremely close, with Pickett describing the star Demon as a big brother.

“I kind of grew up with him,” he said.

“He was in Port Lincoln when he was younger and before he came over here and got picked up by Melbourne.”

“So I am pretty close with him through my dad because my dad is a Pickett.”

When it comes to former Port Adelaide star Byron, his dad also named Byron and Latrelle’s dad Brendon are first cousins.

Charlie Curnow says otherwise. Also, Petracca left us, we didn't seek to offload him. It's never good when your stars want to leave. I'm glad we're building an environment that keeps Kozzy happy. I still think he can go to a higher level - at least in terms of consistency.

I have Greek heritage and everyone is a cousin or an auntie or whatever.

I was pretty sure these guys are actually first cousins but I can’t find anything to back that up so maybe I’m wrong.

Same last name suggests they are cousins in the western view sense. Having said that Latrell mentioned he's known Kozzy for ages and mentioned since he was 10. Seems a bit late to meet your cousin but who knows. To be honest I have plenty of cousins I would not know of I passed them in the street.

Sounds possible.

A lot of First Nations tribes have a thing where your mother’s sisters are also your mother, and therefore cousins are brothers and sisters etc. Which makes a lot of sense given the strong family and community responsibilities for raising and caring for children among many indigenous Australians. It makes the nomenclature confusing - caused and still causes census complications and even more for social services interventions (good and bad) when communities have a different concept of family
