If we want a mid train on then go Milan Murdock
The role I'd see him playing at AFL level is quite similar to a few of the guys we've drafted in the last couple of years. He deserves an opportunity but I'm not sure he's the best fit for our list.

There was a few VFL guys with a little bit more size overlooked that I thought/think would've been quite close to getting picked up.

Last year we went completely from outside WA for train ons. The season before 1/4 was from WA. It won't just be from the WAFL.

I agree - seems very similar to both Sweid and Murray.

Murdoch played half forward in the last finals game East Fremantle played. Otherwise midfielder. He is around same height at 179/180cm (Sweid 176cm and Murray 180cm).

Will be interesting to see what direction they go with train on. Murdoch it seems we have been monitoring but may well no longer be the sort we look at adding due to the way the draft panned out.

FWIW Twomey has put out his annual prospects to watch for next year and Robinson does not get a mention.
Generally when he does this early analysis it is very Vic and SA focussed.

I also don’t think Lucas is as early a draft pick as many think.

So much water to go under the bridge between now and 2026 draft but if I was to take a stab at projected range it is something similar to the fella we drafted this year. Late first / early second, which being compromised draft again will be 20-30 range that Rookie me had for Sweid.

I was more thinking Murphy Reid as opposed to Murray tbh.

Think Murray will be half forward and forward pocket, whilst the other two will be midfield and half forward.

He did mention one WA prospect.

Tbh I just think Robinson is seen as that type of mid no one seems to wants atm (ie purely inside mid). I can see him slipping.

Wallsy, JLO and the club cop a lot of flak for our drafting and trading strategies over the past few years and I have to say they just pulled off another sensible and measured off season.

Something that has become abundantly clear to me is Wallsy/JLO and co are very, very good at communicating with prospective players, picking good characters, and showing them how they can fit into our team and where we could use their strengths.

I rewatched Sweidys interview (his enthusiasm is contagious) and he says that he trusted Freo, Essendon hadn't been clear about whether they would match for him and at what point of the draft. So his own NGA that he has been apart of for years, were vague and unclear but FREO had garnered his trust and faith in just a few meetings. This is a massive theme over the past few years - think Reid, C Simpson, Erasmus, Treacy, heck even Johnson. Underappreciated or overlooked players that our club has put time and work into outlining their worth.

And it is paying off in terms of contract extensions too - Treacy, Young, Erasmus have all signed on for longer before they had/have really hit their own peaks because the club has been able to outline a vision for each of these players and their future. And then we have been able to embed that culture into our cohort of "second chancers" in Wags, Vossy, Sharp, JOM (probably to many people's disgust lol).

As an approach for a workplace, it is also something that I respect. We aren't holding on to players like Reidy and Meek under false promises. It may seem small to some people but when we need players to want to come to us and player for "unders", being a club that is upfront and clear about expectations/roles etc is what is going to sell it to people.

For me the 3 most obvious "failures" of this method have been with Warner (had to be offered ridiculous money), Pickett (had to be offered ridiculous money AND contract length) and BlAAcres (I am not a huge fan myself but I feel we could have sold him the vision a lot better and JLO has said as much in interviews).

Probably been mentioned elsewhere but astute drafting of small forwards essentially planning for the now & future in the small forward department. A ready to go small in Tobyn as cover for Switta next year and his eventual return east or retirement... And a couple of more young ones with a number of attributes that will have Dudley on notice this side of Christmas that he isn't a walk up starter.

Also says the club is comfortable with its stock of young KPD's.

One thing I thought about with Fred.

When either Fred or Robinson were out, Whan stepped up.

When whan was out, Fred didn’t/couldn’t.

Know it’s a small sample, but wonder if that had any impact on the clubs thoughts.

We had list spots open, in case we had to match on Whan, which would indicate that maybe we had him higher than Fred?

Not convinced we would've matched a bid for Whan tbh. Happy he's ultimately a Category B rookie. Effectively an extra draftee.

If the bid came before Murray, I agree.

We still have a list spot available, think we would have.

I love that Freo give our academy boys development spots on our list. We appear to value them. Players like Bennell, Conrad Williams, Ryda Luke are given a chance when they are very raw. If they become AFL players great, if not they go back to their communities with the experience of developing in a professional environment. And the boys still in the academy see that chances are there if they work hard.

Compare that with West Coast. I don't think they give a shit. The AFL give them extra rookies, but they don't bother developing their own academy rookies. Why nominate Walley and not bother to list him? They have nothing to lose in giving him a go and much to gain in terms of making a statement to their academy boys: we value you, we'll give you a go.

The Wes Walley one is unusual. Why bother nominating him. Then a day before rookie draft day sorry champ.

At one point during the year Walley was rated around 2nd round pick and played senior footy with Subiaco.

Makes no sense at all. The cat B is separate to the rookie Cat A.

From what the Bin Chicken Board was saying, Walley was nowhere near AFL standard, and had slacked off big time this year.

Only explanation is that West Coast are looking to do something else with the list spot and there's no indication of them doing so. That or he's sh** and the media have pumped him up because of his links to West Coast only.

Collingwood listed a NGA player as a Category A rookie despite having a Category B spot available in a move that also raised an eyebrow from me.

He said it was not in order, but it kinda looks like it was. First 5 held up pretty well. The next 5 went pick 19, Cat B, pick 49, undrafted, pick 27.

And on a side note, 12 out of the 28 players selected in November 2024 for the 2025 AFL academy ended up as Cat A/B or undrafted. Dean, Grlj, Robey, Farrow, X.Taylor, Pickett, Kyle, O.Taylor, Dovaston, Murray, Nairn (11 of the top 20) were not in the academy.

This board has acted like Robinson is a top five pick. Expecting a similar success rate to this top ten in twelve months.

Point is at this point in time our first rounder likely gets us Robinson if we even need that.

My hunch is that as a baseline, Robinson is going to be better than some random player we add who missed being selected by any club in either this year's weak draft or this year's rookie draft.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I'd take that risk.

I hardly see the relevance to the conversation about this year's draft tbh.

I just posted in here because there isn’t a 2026 thread yet and I couldn't be bothered making one.

I now see the wings and midfield depth as our biggest list needs.

Big, slow, pure inside mid = very middle of the draft.

Robinson is a good mark over his head though so we would do well to ask South Freo to not ever rest him forward. Last thing we want is him taking a few marks forward, kicking a goal every two or so games.

We want the league thinking "skinny, one dimesional, unaccountable, slow, inside mid"

We could have selected Ollie Greeves in the the rookie draft as we were ahead of Hawthorn who napped him, we went for Kickett but Ollie was a huge slider and played really well in the under 18 competition , very strong build ,an AFL ready player and looking at the highlights ,he has real hunger and enthusiasm.
