Welcome Welcome to Hawthorn: Ollie Greeves

Based on what I saw of him today at his first session, the question marks on his capability to run and transition in the modern game are absolutely there.

It’s all in front of him now.
This is why I think the speculation over off-field issues or attitude is pretty silly. The on-field reasons for his drop down the order are obvious. No doubt he's in a great environment to get the best out of himself now.

From today's training report:

Rookie Draft pick Ollie Greeves looked composed during full-field drills, where his precise kicking and field vision stood out as he consistently selected the right option.

This makes me happy to hear from today's training report good vision to hit targets by foot is something that you can't teach.
Endurance can be worked on.

For all the comparisons with Ollie Greeves and Ned long on here yes Long had good running endurance but showd weakness, in marking as as forward, and perceived lack of kicking proficiency, particularly with simple passes.

Longs toughness and contested work were also strengths, but he struggles to convert easy kicks which was the key to him getting delisted by the club.

This was only a couple of months back.
You don't go from a top ten prospect to not being called because you're a bit slow or need to build a tank etc.

Whatever the issue is it has nothing to do with anything on field
Just quietly - we got two names on that list without having a top 12 pick and 4 of them were off the table

Sleepy Mark - take a bow (and then get some shut eye)

FWIW, I think this has the potential to become knows as the big steal.

Ignore the shit floating around, cos that is what it is. Kid can play, has been a prodigy from then he was young. KB used to talk about him on his show as he played with his grandson.

Interesting that they put him up against Meek in one-on-ones. Perhaps the coaches are trying to explain that his bullying size, so useful in schoolboy footy, will add up to diddly-squat against the plethora of AFL-seasoned bulls he's going to face, week-in week-out? Needs to develop and diversify alternative weapons

Will be the steal of the draft if he gets his attitude and work ethic right. Serious wake up call for Ollie.

Playlist of Greeves videos to check out:

Don't beleive the shit being thrown around, work ethic and attitude are fine. He had the choice of footy or basketball, chose AFL cos he loves the game.

There is s story behind this attitude BS.

To improve his chances to succeed, Greeves should shadow someone like Dylan Moore this pre-season, similar to how Breust worked with Sammy when he first arrived at Hawthorn. Understand the amount of hard work and professionalism required to make it at the top level.

Dylan is also a great example of a player that appreciates how quickly a career can end if you don't take your chances, being de-listed and rookie listed at the end of 2020.

Ollie has the talent, it all comes down to how he applies himself from here.

Thank you for your input 🙏. I watched him closely today and his attitude was great. Needs to work on his fitness but no different to most other draftees just starting their journey. His quads are huge already ….. and he looks to have some smarts, awareness with good skills.

If the running stuff is an issue and he's still been this good at underage level imagine the upside...

Sigh, his running is not an issue. He was also as elite basketballer, last year he was a member of the Victorian U18 side that won the national title. As such he has only dedicated himself to AFL fitness in the last 12 months, so he has a few more years requried to build the tank.

And due to basketball he is used to goipng up against big units

Thanks for the insights that makes a bit more sense, do you happen to have any info as to what the knock on him was that saw him get through to the rookie draft?

In the running session today when the time was blown for a break all players kept their position and then when it restarted they ran back in the other direction.
So anyone coming last would automatically be first and have the margin they were behind as their lead for the next set of running. Dalton, Moore, Ward, Weddle and others routinely rounded up those ahead of them and were again at the front at each break.

Greeves was continually overtaken when the groups changed direction, and by the end of each lap he was last again, and this happened in every running set(apart from Hilly, who matey has reported was still recovering from some form of gastro).

In a game that is only getting more demanding with the new last touch rule, running is most definitely an issue he needs to work on and unfortunately as a rookie he doesn’t have a 3 year contract to improve his tank.

The “shit floating around” is real, but it’s off-field. That can be worked separately to his footballing. His footballing ability is highly regarded.

I don't recall Ned being touted to be taken high in the national draft
Ned was spoken about as a possible first round pick roughly a year out from his draft. But he fell out of favour through the year and better prospects moved up scouts boards.

To your point though, he was never considered or spoken about like Ollie was. Ollie was essentially a lock in the first 15 until roughly 6 weeks before the draft.

It’s the opposite. He slid because of his tank.

And if you read above there is exhibit A. I spoke to a player manager months before the draft who raised the issue with his tank so clubs were all over it.

Husswaite slid due to his speed.

Worpel slid due to his speed and kicking.

It happens. And the timing of the new last possession rule exacerbated the concern with Greeves.

And do you think we would have sought to list him as an academy player if he was a flog?

I know you aren't saying this but it's important to note that he doesn't need to become an endurance beast overnight. Nor will it happen. It's not how aerobic bases work. I appreciate people here have DGB PTSD but he is not the norm and most players can (with the right work ethic) develop a base with time.

The club will assess his aerobic levels throughout the year and if he makes appropriate progress you'd assume he'll be given more time (via a contract extension) to develop enough of a tank to contribute at AFL level.

You arew comparing seaoned players to a kid who has just started. Harely Reid had the same problems and most before him had. There are the odd atheltic freaks who can just run but most have to build a tank and it takes time. In his case he had not committed to the AFL training regime until this year.

There was an issue that I will not go into. If clubs had bothered to get the back story they would have had a completely different view of things and the person behind it. I learnt very early in my buisness career to never assume you know what happened and always ask for each parties version of events.

Clubs do not appear to have done this and that has worked in your favour IMO. I think you have made out like bandits, time will tell but he is a good kid, is very dedicated, very hard working and gets along with people. Sure arrogance in the way he plays but you won't find many good AFL players who do not have self belief, its essential.

Anyway good luck, maybe the story will come out one day, suspect it will if he becomes a gun because the other 17 clubs will be trying to cover their asses. If not, who cares.

Thanks for the info, respect the privacy and what you've shared, as someone here wrote we tried twice to get NGA access having worked closely with him so the character stuff we probably already had ticked off on!

Think most hawks supporters are ridiculously excited he's slipped to us and trying to understand why

Well look at Ollies school and you might see a Hawthorn connection, head of coaching and performance is I believe Jason Burt. I assume he still has contacts at the Hawks.

Anyway I ave said enough. Good luck (much as I hate to say it).
