Clubs who have signed players past the current TV rights contract (ends in 2031) might have issues. We have Josh Worrell past 2031.

The AFL can absorb reduced revenue from the TV rights deal. They have plenty of money in the bank. However what will likely happen is we will most likely see the Tasmania deal finally killed or they will renege on the stadium to get Tasmania firing to help sell foxtel on the growth of the league.

But the issue long term is bang for their buck, Too many clubs in Melbourne struggle for fans and there are just too many dead games with low ratings. Tasmania will have the whole state rocking and that will definitely provide some viewing growth.

As a result of the working relationship between Laura Kane and Greg Swann, one industry figure said the workplace environment at league headquarters was becoming untenable.

The AFL’s bold mid-season shake-up of its struggling football operations department has triggered fresh tension at league headquarters.
Months after Brisbane Lions CEO Greg Swann was parachuted into AFL House to take charge of the football department, multiple industry sources say the move has sparked unrest among staff.

Swann’s arrival saw Laura Kane’s responsibilities essentially cut in half, after she was first made the league’s footy boss in August, 2023.

Swann took responsibility for match reviews, umpiring, game analysis, player movement, laws of the game, innovation and club engagement, leaving Kane managing the operations of the AFL, AFLW, VFL, VFLW, Coates Talent League and the game’s response to health and concussion.

That split has led to some crossover in tasks between the two branches of the football department and caused strain between the two teams, with clubs unsure who to contact when reaching out to league HQ.
One industry figure said the workplace environment was becoming untenable.

Another league source said: “Greg Swann and Laura Kane don’t even talk...they don’t like each other, they don’t get along.”

Others have pointed to the top-heavy nature of the league’s organisational structure with veteran football administrator Geoff Walsh working at AFL House four days a week while Emma Moore is the general manager of women’s football and falls under Kane’s purview.

The AFL’s game development GM, Rob Auld, also took on extra football duties in the restructure.

Kane appointee Nick Carah was also brought in as general manager of football operations in April before Kane’s job was split and she was handed the operations portfolio.

Both league and football department staff have frustrations around the arrangement, signed off by AFL CEO Andrew Dillon and the Richard Goyder-led commission.

One club source said there was still confusion on who to contact out of Swann and Kane with any concerns or questions and described the adding of layers and staff within the football department as like “band-aids on top of each other”.

MRO overhaul: Grading system set to be changed to deliver more lenient outcomes​

The AFL is set to overhaul its match review system to deliver more lenient suspensions for some rough conduct cases, potentially reducing three-match bans to one or two games.

The Herald Sun can reveal the league will introduce a new lever which will allow it to downgrade impact severity and effectively reduce the length of some suspensions.

It means players who have previously received a three-match suspension for concussing an opponent in an innocuous-looking incident may miss only one or two matches in 2026.
The shake-up will give the league extra scope to find some middle ground in some cases instead of the black-or-white situations where players face three-match bans or nothing.

But stomach punches will likely attract tougher penalties including suspensions next year where players are deliberately struck to the mid-section with a closed first or swinging arm.

The new MRO rules will be popular with clubs who have lobbied the AFL to create more flexibility in its match review system.

In particular, there has been a spate of three-match rough conduct and head-high contact bans in recent years.

Imagine Carlton got the number 1 draft pick this year with a 9 win season over West Coast who won one game for the entire year.

West Coast sucked, and they deserved the number 1 pick. Having them to beat Richmond to Carlton to earn it defeats the point.

If loser gets the better pick, will be a week of most obvious tanking you’ve ever seen.

If the winner (aka the better team) gets the better pick, you’re punishing bad teams. West Coast won 1 game for the entire year. They were the worst team in modern history. Why should they have to beat Richmond who won 5 games to get the number 1 pick?

All that happens is every team will lose against the better team, and get 1 less pick spot to improve the next year.

Richmond beat West Coast by 50 points in round 19. Any situation where they don’t get the number 1 pick is a broken system.
