Comparative to size and population, i know plenty of people who've been to Tassie... multiple times.

Granted the stadium is going to help, but to say its not somewhere that people dont go already is well..... rubbish.
Never said people dont go there but its not anywhere near the definition of destination spot

Surely it has to mean a very big influx of opposing club supporters from the mainland especially Victoria with it's easy accessibility for them. Why wouldn't supporters make a weekend of it and spend the $$$$$'s on accommodation and entertainment etc

If they finish bottom, why wouldn't they just not match and get pick 2 compo?

Unfortunately for the Power, firsts will be at a premium next year before Tasmania come in. If Butters is out of contract and wants to leave he can and he'll get to where he wants.

I'd love to see him leave, low probability they get anyone at his level with the pick/s they get for him.

Also, Carr isn't coming in and trying to finish bottom for draft picks, you can't really believe that.

Changes mean no discount and can only use two picks to match now. Won’t be nearly the steal it was this year and years prior.

They’ll end up using their Butters picks. Cochrane is going to have to be amazing to be worth Butters.
So if they finish bottom and not match butters.
Wouldn’t they have pick 1,2 (another club bids on cochrane and they match.
They’d just have to find 2 picks in the teens?

In this scenario they have pick 1 from finishing bottom and pick 2 from Butters FA compo.

When are you saying a bid on Cochrane would come in this hypothetical?

I would assume 3rd pick?

The new bidding rules have not been announced yet. It's speculated you can only use 2 picks and there is no or a reduced discount.

So for the Power to be able to take two players before a bid on Cochrane at pick 3 they would need something like picks 12 and 14 to match.

The value of first rounders next year goes up. It's the last draft before Tasmania and the changes to the bidding system means clubs aren't throwing them away for scraps anymore. So they would pay a big price for these two picks, if they are even able to secure a deal.

In this scenario they very well could just take him with one of their first two picks, might be the cheapest option.

Tasmania with that stadium will all of a sudden become a destination state. It was a no brainer. Sure big upfront cost but the economic benefits will more than cover it.
Doubt it becomes a destination state .....currently a favourite retiree state, there's bugger all for young AFL footballers to be entertained

Retention of players will be a massive issue

Who, outside of AFL / Cricket, is going to put on a show in Hobart .....if artists won't go to Adelaide, Hobart has little hope

There's red flags everywhere on all fronts

That's a silly assumption and highly arrogant. Tasmania will become a rockstar destination where every footballer on the Tasmanian squad will be a celebrity. Add in the fact the AFL will program prime time slots and prime Vic and interstate teams Hobart will be rocking. It will be a mistake to merely use a stupid stereotype to write them off.

Mmmm ....Adelaide can't attract non St Aust footballers ....but Hobart will become a rockstar destination

Of course that makes sense

So essentially Cochrane could cost them their first plus Butters? High price to pay.

Wouldn’t be too disappointed to see them finish 11th….miss finals and have to sell the farm for Dougie.

Thats a dumb assumption

If a bid comes super early they will be paying at least a 1st rnd pick, as in a 1st rnd pick used in the actual bid matching, no scrap picks. There's a million different scenarios.

They hold 2x 2nd rounders so should be fine if the bid is outside the top 10. Use their 1st and any Butters picks on players, then match a Cochrane bid in the late 1st or 2nd round. That's what they would be hoping for.

Hobart will be as unattractive to Victorian/interstate players as Adelaide, and Tasmania produces far fewer footballers than SA

Tassie might have some appeal to older people, but you don't hear many 20-30 year olds wanting to move there

Yeah - it was always going to get through. Follow the money.

No way it gets built on time, but will be huge lift for the city … and a massive cost for the state.

Almost everyone agrees it’s a strange thing to build a luxury beach house while your household budget is struggling to pay the mortgage and you are hoping no one needs medical care!

The weird argument that it will break the beautiful look of the waterfront is hilarious … apart from the fact that NO ONE goes near that area now, MacPoint is, and has been for a long time, an eyesore of a piece of land. It won’t bother the Cenotaph… it won’t ruin any historical landmarks … I think it will look pretty good actually.

Now it’s approved, we all hope it brings enough to the state to justify itself. I’m happy to get AFL proper down here, wary of what it might cost us … but I was always tipped towards the yes side. I can’t stand the NO argument based on fear of change.

Time to push ahead, Hobart will be better for it - hopefully Tasmanians will too!!
I assume some super smart AFL dude is on top of this but they need to be offering "weekender" tourism packages where you get a flight, a ticket to the game, some accommodation. Stay a couple of nights (or more), do a bit of touristy stuff.

Brings extra money into the state every weekend during the season, it could be a good thing.

You don't think they'll be making the same case around Tasmania's lifestyle as they do to attract players to Geelong?

One obvious difference is Melbourne is just down the road - but the wilderness of Tassie will be attractive to some.

Tourism Tasmania has been doing that with Hawthorn and NM games for years

I'm sure they'll make the case, but Geelong will be by far the location of choice for players that want that lifestyle

he’s projected to be a top first round pick. Surely whoever gets the first pick, would bid straight away

Long way to go til the draft.

Just on the Power supporter who mentioned clubs would be willing to give up 3x 1sts for him. If a bid came at pick 1, it would actually be the Power giving up at least 2x 1sts for him, not any other club.

Yeah but when has a pick 1 ever not worked out to be the best player in the league? Amiright?

They are losing one of the most sought after young players in years - Butters is on every team’s Wishlist.

They are probably going to be in a proper rebuild phase … and we all know how long and dreary path that can be. They have a few younger stars, so might not be as deep as what we experienced - but I don’t see a quick sustained rebound on the horizon for the Paer.

👍

Spending 2 x 1st round picks now for Cochrane is going to hurt their rebuild

PORT have flittered away too many 1st round Draft Picks ....they need to Draft more 1st round picks, not less
If they lose Butters, they simply go backwards in the short-term .....losing a champion to gain a "potential" good player, with no guarantees

Having 5-6 star players in a team PLUS role players ....is not a formula for success in the modern game, where an even spread of talent has proven a more successful model
