So, we’ve given up pick 47 for an injury replacement player for this season, someone who wasn’t even offered a contract by the Pies. What is going on? I’m clearly not in tune with AFLW trading, but this move makes me question whether we’re really handling this area well at all.

Are we so poor at list management that we’re trading for a discarded players? It feels like we’re giving away draft capital for little to no long-term value. Can someone please explain the logic behind this decision, because right now it looks like dogs breakfast to me?

Regardless, the thing I am unclear on is…in the men’s pick 47 is close to worthless, usually. In the W is it worthless? I don’t know how deep their drafts run.

The draft this year isn't that deep, which is why some clubs are stocking up on future picks. Plus clubs will have the pre-season draft next year to fill list spots.

Pick 47 is worth not much in AFLW. The draft isn't that deep. Once you get through the 30s it's replacement players more often than not.

Appears that the Pies offered her a contract after Brisbane's interest become evident.
Doesn't make any sense. They're not like a toddler with a discarded toy.

OK, that explains this trade. Thank you.

2 first round picks isn't the worst thing in the world, mostly since she's under contract.
But it’s not 2 first round draft picks. It’s 1 first round draft pick, plus a 3 spot upgrade.
Yeah, the club would be happy to move her on. If they were concerned her being traded would screw with the ability to win games next year, they'd hold her to contract like GWS is doing with McCormick. Referring to Bastiani's comments shared above, it seems like the club has a plan to replace her in the lineup, guess we'll see what that is
The fact that I’m agreeing with Irel (when I believe he’s a c<*t of the highest order) should be be enough for anyone else to take pause and look at the trade properly.

Nah obviously our recruiting team sucks and we'll never be successful again apparently.

Beveridge: A trade taking Brisbane spearhead Taylor Smith to Sydney has essentially been agreed, after Hawthorn emerged as the circuit breaker in talks on Tuesday. Still to be lodged officially, but the deal will look like this.

I have mentioned before that getting something reasonable now for Smith seeing she wants out is the way to go.
Pick 11 & then 15 being a slight upgrade on 18 is fine with me
Let's see what the club do with 11,15 and whatever else they have

Lions BF posters rate Taylor Smith way higher than i do.

Hopefully the club have their eye on a KPF.
I assume the AFLW will follow the men's with 5 on the bench.
So, a relief ruck could be positioned on the bench easily enough.

They already have 5 on the bench and we already play 2 rucks

Huh, appreciate the compliment toon.

Yeah Sarah Black just confirmed as much. Still chose Brisbane, and will be at Brisbane next year.

So current draft hand is: 11, 33, 54, 72, and 90

Disappointed to see her go I must say. A decent enough player but has bricks for hands when marking. Also, mostly struggled to make a big impact in finals.

I wonder if we didn't kick up more of a stink because her game play (get over the back and on to it with speed) very much doesn't hold up against NM, whereas Dakota's contested marking/on the lead does moreso - and, as you say, her marking leaves a bit to be desired. The number of times she gets her hands on the ball with a really well-timed leap versus how many she comes down with is forgiveable but a gap.

2025 draft hand: 11, 33, 54, 72, and 90
2026 draft hand: Rd 1, end of Rd 1 (GWS), Rd 2 (Pies), Rd 2 (Blues), Rd 2 (Crows)

AFLW trade deadline: Weston-Turner deal falls apart as Zoe Prowse, Taylor Smith find new homes
Brisbane head of football Breanna Brock said there were non-football reasons behind the club’s willingness to make a deal for the contracted Smith.
“While we are disappointed to see Taylor go, AFLW is a little different to the men’s space. Taylor had some professional opportunities to explore outside of football in Sydney, which were too good for her to refuse,” Brock said.
“We’ve been supportive of Taylor’s wishes to explore this and managed to get the trade done with the help of Hawthorn. We wish Taylor and partner Tom all the best for the next chapter in their lives.”

Thanks, for some reason i never took much notice of how many or who was on the women's bench.

Also forgot about Hartill who averages the same amount of hit outs as Smith. Around the 5 mark.
Hartill's TOG was very low during the finals with a 3-game average of 30.3% TOG.

THAT'S A WRAP: Your club's ins and outs after the Trade Period
Brisbane's forward line has taken a hit, with both Taylor Smith and Ellie Hampson traded to Sydney and Port Adelaide respectively, while defender-turned-forward Poppy Boltz has also found a new home with Greater Western Sydney. It does create a gap for Rania Crozier to make her own next season following three games this year, and puts pressure on Dakota Davidson to return to her best form, but also asks the question of the Lions at the draft table on Monday to bolster the line, and of the coaching panel to shuffle some magnets to remain dangerous ahead of the ball. Lily-Rose Williamson adds to that forward mix, with a capacity to slide between the midfield and forward line, with the Collingwood replacement signing making the move after one year in the black and white.

Meg Lappin is the daughter of three-time Brisbane premiership player, and alongside twin sister Ally, is eligible to the Lions as a father-daughter prospect. While a raw talent in terms of her output to-date, Lappin certainly has the traits that can be developed for the future and is viewed as more of a long-term prospect.
It'd be rude not to draft a Father Daughter prospect tbh
