Cleansheet but Brighton had plenty of decent chances. Still some problems at the back but seem to be on the improve.

We looked more dangerous going forward. Hopefully starting to gel.

Squad has some holes. Ended up with two left backs on the field. No right back. Who is our next CB up?

PSA for doomsdayers: a 5 game run (3 away, 2 home) with 3 wins, 2 draws, 9 goals scored, 4 goals conceded, 3 clean sheets is not "sack the manager" or "lost the dressing room" material. We didn't even have the guy who bailed us out countless times last year start any of the games.

Chance creation was quite even. Our last ditch defending was good enough to put pressure on most shots. We lost quite a few games where we lead on xG so were due a win in the opposite situation.

Very light on the bench, obvious signs when you name a 3rd GK & an academy player.

Salah, Gakpo, Gomez, Leoni all missing.

If we keep this formation we should target another Mid and we need a CB or 2

Brighton create really good chances against everyone. I have seen them do that to Man City. So I am not too concerned. Fair play to them.

I am super impressed that Ekitike is now scoring with his head. Early on when he first joined I thought his heading ability seemed pretty poor. Now he is a threat in the air.

Our depth is really getting stretched.

Nice to see Jordan Henderson score and dedicate his goal to Jota. The impact of losing Diogo is still huge to anyone that played with or knew him.

Henderson has actually been really good for Brentford too. It's a bit of a shame that it never worked out for him to be our James Milner-like figure with the squad till his mid 30s.

Honestly would have been handy for us these last couple years too. We got rid of him way too soon

Thoughts:

  • at times v Brighton we started to look like Liverpool again. Just need more of that end product
  • it got a little gamey in the second half defensively. Bradley back next week helps that, but Szob/Jones at RB is an issue (Slot should have brought on Ramsay and not Chiesa when Szob went off)
  • Having said that, if Szob ain't right next week, it's time for Chiesa to start.
  • E - KI - TI - KE
  • I reckon Konate is turning the corner. But he does get isolated a lot through the RB being a long way up the pitch
  • A few blokes getting cramp tells you one thing: they worked their backsides off v Brighton. Good to see.

Oh he's not in great form, he needed to swallow his pride, realise his form is shit and wait his turn on the bench to get in the XI. But great players always chuck hissy fits when they have to go to the bench. Look at Gerrard, Rodgers wanted him to be more of a bench player and come on and impact games, less starts. He hated that idea and ended up leaving for America. Yet had he stayed and helped off the bench, he would have played under Klopp and perhaps had a revival of sorts late in his career.

Mo could still help us, even if its from the bench. But who knows what happening at the minute. So many ridiculous rumours out there on the internet right now.
I don't have any issue with Mo's interview after the Leeds game. Mo is in that rarified company of exceptional high achieving players who have broken numerous records and display some narcissistic traits of extreme self confidence, high ambition and generally a need for recognition. It's these traits that have propelled Mo to break scoring records with us. It is also these traits that will stop him in accepting a role of impact player coming off the bench. He did really well when he came on against Brighton and it would've great to see him cap off his career with Liverpool with another goal. I truly believe he's played his last game for Liverpool.

I don't think we are about to give him away. But I wouldn't be surprised if he is sold in January. Hendo and Fab went all of a sudden at the right price.

And if he is sold in January, it will be a sad moment.

Yes it will be sad, Mo will go down as one of the greatest players of the competition let alone Liverpool. All good things eventually must come to an end. The trick is to recognize when the end is approaching and to mitigate it with a replacement. I'm giving Isak a pass for this season. Ekitike has already over achieved as I never expected him to settle this quickly. I'm hoping these 2 strikers we've brought in score plenty for many years to come. Nothing worse than holding onto a player even one of our best players as their decline is starting.

Underrated win btw. Team would've been low on confidence and distracted plus Brighton are no joke. All about scraping into next seasons Champions League now (can't see us making a sustained run in the knockouts but can never rule it out entirely).
