Welcome Welcome to Hawthorn: Ollie Greeves

🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

This thread has gone nuts, this draft was weird because the 2 best juniors from u15s to u18s were Dyson Sharp and Oliver Greeves and yet they both went later than I expected personally, the future will tell if the clubs got it right or wrong, I'm putting money on they got it wrong and both become better than expected.... although I would like Greeves to drop 5 kgs to help this bet to make me a profit lol.

I think it was Gattica that had the line: ‘there is no gene for the human spirit’.

That’s where the gaps are that will allow some of these talented but supposedly flawed kids to thrive in an AFL environment.

We were reminded with Calsher that sometimes the smokies who looked a million dollars at the lower level, but are seen to be deficient and lacking in some key metric or another, actually possess a great deal that is ultimately a lot more important at the higher level: footy IQ and an iron will.

I really hope this kid is one of them, because we’re due in the luck department based on previous years.

And if he works hard, he will be our bully in the AFL

...until Geelong come sniffing and try to recruit him as a free agent just like they did with Worps. sigh

We'll have him for 7 years before that happens

The best thing about this thread is that it shows the incredible amount of interest and care supporters have for one of our rookies.
I think it's safe to say that Ollie will be watched very closely throughout the year, but I think it's also worth recognising that the rest of our draftee's should get just as much hype.

We nabbed the highest rated KPF, a HHF hybrid wing, a potential Day clone (all from the same club, mind you), and two of the most competitive ball winners/users in the draft.
All draftees would have to go into this season thinking they're a chance to debut if they work hard enough, especially with our midfield mix being something we are actively working on.

Wouldn’t he need to be upgraded and take the list spot of someone on our senior AFL list first?

We don’t have any senior list spots available at the moment and would need a long term injury for this to happen wouldn’t we?
You're about 12 years late with this post.

Pretty sure Worps wanted to stay and would've stayed had we upped our offer. Unfortunately for him, our list management team (rightly) determined we could only pay him what we offered, given the number of young players we have and need to re-contract in the near future.

If Greeves becomes so valuable for us that he's amongst our priority signings by the time he gets to free agency, I'm confident he'll stay with the team that drafted him.

He was Geelong through and through. Some of his brothers didn't even switch allegiances when he played for Hawthorn, they still supported Geelong. There would have been a lot oof pressure on him to move to the dark side.

On another note, I could totally understand his brothers not wanting to switch allegiance. I mean, if my son was drafted by another team, I wouldn't switch, but then I support Hawthorn.

whoa, hang on, one went pick 13, the other ended up in the rookie draft after every club had a chance to pick him, including clubs that passed in the AFL draft, ie took nothing rather than Ollie, and clubs that passed over him in the rookie draft.
so, when you say "lower", one of these "best two" still went high in the draft, the other was universally unwanted (including by us)
so, there is a massive difference there.
I would love the kid to do well and become a great player, but the fall from grace, so to speak, is what intrigues me the most. Personally, I cannot understand it. Would love to know the inside story.
either way, glad to have him on board and hope the hype translates into something fantastic!!!

Can't see how he can drop 5, maybe 1 or 2kgs at best, even that would be tough and likely to compromise his strength.

Pretty sure Ginni's dad (and Jack too) never switched to Collingwood.

He was apparently pretty ill during draft combine (that's why he didn't do the time trial) time so lost a lot of weight during that period and later had a PB in the 2km. So from his highlights in U18 till day one of preseason he'd dropped a lot of weight, and he's already looking more defined than he was back in December.

Can't wait to see him in the practice matches and some VFL matches.

Hawthorn. It's the only logical choice

I remember on Safeway New Faces, when Bert Newton hosted it, he saw a little kid sitting in the audience in a Fitzroy jumper. He asked him who his dad and mum and brother supported and he said "Richmond." Bert decided to give the encouragement award (intended for a contestant) to that kid.

I called BS because:
a) it was Fitzroy
b) how did Bert know he had a brother?
c) poor kid, what kind of parents would let a kid have free choice and then let him choose Fitzroy

Does he have as much pace as what Roughy had before his achilles injury?
Oh come on.

How, and by what metrics, can you compare the two?

Roughy's first preseason was 22 years ago, and even prior to the achilles in 2011 what recall do you think any of us have of comparative speeds across the ground?

Greeves has not pulled on a Hawthorn or Box Hill guernsey yet.

Please, leave any type of comparison until after he's at least had his first hit out for the club.

I know you're excited, but it may need to be tempered a bit.

If you don’t want to read people getting excited about Ollie Greeves, then may I suggest literally any other page on the entire internet?
It's not that at all, and it's disingenuous for you to suggest that.

I don't care how excited people are, but please, look at the comment.

Or better yet, how would you compare the ground speed of a player from 15 years ago with a player having his first preseason?

We could say the same thing about people who don’t want to read rational thoughts about a kid rather than over the top gushing.

Pace isn't an issue if we are talking about CHF. The key question is can he play CHB........
