Personally I dont give a flying f what day it is. I celebrate being lucky every single day. Every day to me is Australia Day.

Australia Day being established on the 26th January precedes the Day or Mourning by a few years.

The Day of Mourning, an important cultural date for our country, was deliberately aligned with that date as a form of protest. The two are intertwined. Have been for almost a century.

How do we keep both without losing their cultural significance?

I've always been an advocate for changing the date because to me, someone born in South Australia of English migrants, the specific date has no real meaning. However, the more I read into it and speak to people around me, the more I start to see it as what it currently is: a political football. The issue has been hijacked on both sides for political gain. By all means change the date but the issues won't go away.

The floating date for Australia Day holiday makes the most sense because it removes its link to a specific historical moment and allows for all to celebrate with a day off work, the most Australian thing ever.

Keep the Day of Mourning on the 26th Jan and treat it with the reverence it deserves. In reality it's as important to indigenous Australians as Anzac Day.

Thing is, they'll expect a holiday for the 26th of January still for date of mourning and will still cause issues in society and division no matter how we look at it and no matter what it means TRULY to people. Majority of people who are "mourning" on the mourning date, probably have no real clue or feeling towards it. It's just virtue signalling primarily.

And even of you have a floating date, I can 100% guarantee we will still be having the same conversations, issues and political back and forth nonsense. It won't end no matter what. Unfortunately we are too deep in a society where victomhood and virtue signalling amongst other social problems, are a big issue moving forward, as well as people just needing something to fill an empty void they have.

I believe I know exactly what the reasons are, as to why society as a whole, is in this mess, but I won't go into it here.

This is why AFL and sports overall, should never get involved in social topics and political garbage like they've started doing more and more frequently. Sports and politics do not mix and people don't watch and/or follow sports to deal with politics and the "outside world" social stuff.. They just want to watch and follow their sport and team(s), that's it. Yet here we are.

To be honest, Port specifically don't even need to make a post saying happy Australia day either. They can just leave all their posts, etc, related to AFL and Port only and that's it. But they choose not to unfortunately and then all this back and forth happens.

Perhaps Koch and moronic individuals or the group handling socials and what not at Port, should for once just shut the F up and leave ALL that crap alone. Majority of people don't give a shit when they post any of it and only want updates, news, team and player stuff plus sport related stuff on there. That's it.

Maybe one day they'll use their brains or, Port will have a president and board that will just say, stop bringing politics and crap into this game and our club.

Went and bought some mister kits from bunnings the other day and gonna set them up in the coop overhead so wont be bringing them back in on future heatwaves because its a pain in the ass.

Derrimut Windsor keeps shutting the upstairs because it’s too hot and the AC doesn’t work.

Last week they shut the entire gym for two days lol.

I am newish to them, friends have got em so im not totally unfamiliar but so far they are good fun. Ive got em in a spot where I can see them scratching about and doing their thing while im having a soak in the spa and they are sort of relaxing in a way.

My brother in law has chooks and gives us eggs quite regular. The weirdest looking colored eggs, sky blue, deep brown, a weird cream. But they are the best tasting eggs Ive ever had. There is a massive difference even from free range supermarket eggs.

Maybe the club making a statement is less about getting involved with political garbage and more about demonstrating solidarity and support for the indigenous players that play for the club.

Putting aside the arguments about nazi marches and virtue signalling, the do we change the date or not argument really boils down to empathy. Do we care enough about a group of people, who are also Australian, to recognise that celebrating this date in particular is a potential cause of grief and pain for them. If you don’t, then changing the date makes no sense. If you do, then it’s a simple case of does the empathy that you feel mean more than maintaining the status quo?
