Clubs still don't know the bidding rules... not click bait this time. Ridiculous this isnt planned 3+ years in advance.

Great time in life to have a gap year, no school, no commitments. There are plenty of high performance and education institutes around the world to pursue some personal and professional development this year. WHat are the AFL going to say? Cody can't use this time to better himself? If the AFL don't know their own rules yet because thats whats in their best interest, Cody and Carlton should absolutley be doing what's in their best interest. Don't be in the limelight, let others show their talents and elevate themselves. Maybe pick 1-3 drops to pick 4-5. Take any discount you can get, because there's three other lists that have absolutely reamed the old rules and will reap those benefits for another decade!

**** the AFL and their bullshit ineptitude. We got enough of that at Carlton for the last 30 years without their help. AFL want to play stupid games, dress it up as an amazing opportunity for Cody, what was the school Hird went to in France as punishment? Cody has always yearned for baguettes and berets...
No doubt his draft stock would drop, but so would his development.

Any changes should be announced at a minimum before the trade period a full year before the changes are brought in.

It is utterly absurd that rules for this years draft could possibly be changed now.
Incompetence of the highest order that trades could not be made with surety of their use for drafting in the next drafts (extended to 2yrs).

Draft rule changes should have reflected the included periods. It should have also absorbed the recent changes made that affected this years bidding system and the overall assessment of those changes orchestrated by an AFL committee.

I'm highly skeptical of this notion that his development would drop away given where his level is already and the circumstance of his age. He doesn't need to play 20 junior/VFL games to work on so many other aspects, particularly skills, kicking mechanics, physical preparation, exposure to other elite athletes and their preparation and some quality education and night life. Growth doesn't just come from a TAC bubble for another year, it could be so much more. In this particular instance because of his age, I could see both the player and the club benefitting from a different approach where the downside missing those normal pathways, could be covered through training blocks with the club as bookends to the season and preseason while enjoying a different path to the club. Would he get more from the preseason training with the club vs more TAC/VFL/Rep games? Judging how well top Academy players slot into clubs from an early age now, to me the answer is clear.

It won't happen though, so Cody and Carlton can stew all year, media can drive clicks with the will he/won't he, other clubs can agigtate to ensaure a rival is weakened... call me cynical but the AFL definitely operate on pairing manufactured change events with opaque decision making.

Put the concept of parking Cody away, the boy may love the club but sitting for a year would probably cost him the best part of a million dollars over the space of what is a short career.

I would like to know how anyone suggests we can pay him over the year off without setting off alarm bells also.
Development is irrelevent if we cant get him.

Even if we sat him out for a year there's still no guarantee a club wouldn't select/bid on him in the top 1-3 regardless, even if it was purely out of spite.

He will play CTL and Champs games just like every other draft hopeful. May play some VFL too but hypotheticals regarding hiding him for the year are nonsense.

No chance he gets bid at 1 if he sat out the year.

It makes no difference on the club bidding on him. If Carlton were brash enough to tell a healthy Cody Walker to sit for a year there's every chance they'd do so just to spite us.

He'll play the year and develop his game further, something he still has to do mind you, and not something that can be done so on the training track or in the gym alone.

For us maybe, not for him. He still wants to be the best footballer he can be, and not playing for a year at his age isn't that.

Of course he'd want to get to us too, but imagine telling a 17 yr old kid who loves to footy to actually take a year off, let alone try and convince him and his family that it won't hurt his development at all.

It's a nonsense suggest, however the entire situation is a nonsense in fairness. The AFL still not updating everyone to changes to the draft by now is absolute farce. It was amateurish to do it with just 12 months notice, as trades and future draft pick moves are made 24 months out, but to do it after a season has launched is some of the worst professional sports admin possible.

This leadership has already lost trust of the fanbase, and I'd suggest clubs. This is only lowering that reputation more. As much as I disliked McLachlan, he's looking like an all time great compared to this mob.

Cody Walker will still get drafted high regardless of how much football he plays this year, so it would not be a very worthwhile venture on our part.

We drafted Brodie Kemp in the first round even though he was due to miss his entire first season with us. Chris Judd had two shoulder recos as a junior and was drafted #3.

In recent years, Elijah Hollands did his ACL in February of his draft year and was drafted number 7. Max King did his ACL in April of his draft year and was drafted number 4.

Apply the same to Cody Walker, not an injury but getting him to play very minimal football this year. All we will have done is halted his development for a year, but he will still get drafted in the top 3-5 because every single list manager know all about him and how good he is.

Exactly, let him develop.

There will be a whole new bunch of 17 year olds playing great footy this year that will take the attention away from the older Cody who the recruiters will stop analysing as much, theye already know what he can do. I would not be surprised that by the end of the year he slips down the draft order quite a bit with the new crop coming through.

Cody needs to have a talk to JHF to find out what you need to do to get to agree trade you after 1 year.

Refuse the ice bath.
What else
Driving drunk imo is always a fun way to drop a few rungs at draft time. The closer the better so it’s fresh in peoples minds 😆

How do you get the most clicks regarding what the FS/academy draft picks will look like? The AFL making the biggest fanbases sweat for months on end.

They know what they are doing. They also know that if they remove the ability to draft FS/academy players in the first round, they will isolate the biggest supporter bases. That means the loss of money because heaps of supporters, let’s say Carlton supporters, will stop buying buying AFL/MCC memberships as a middle finger to the AFL removing our clubs ability to select our best FS ever. Dillon and Kane would be dumb if they did anything so drastic and foolish.

Not sure where you read that but the AFL confirmed around 5-6 months ago that it won't be happening.

The simple thing to implement would be previous recipients of the advantages that were allowed access to top draft picks are excluded or penalised in future drafts.
Collingwood, Western, Brisbane as examples of beneficiaries.
Personally not against F/S & academies, the ying & yang of the draft system.

They will change the rules again so that you have to match with even higher picks. So you can't just slide back a bunch of picks for points gains. The limiting of the

The AFL didn't see it as a priority when Bris got 2 x top 5 kids in a row + multiple academy kids / Coll got Moore + 2xDaicos / Geel built a dynasty off the F/S rule / GC sweeping 5 x 1st round academy kids.

But Carlton look like getting a potential top 3 pick and reform the FS rule is priority number 1.

Just a coincidence.

And then they will change the rules again when the next big Collingwood, Geelong, Bulldogs or Brisbane FS/academy prospect comes around to make it easier to match a bid.

Might have missed this but what about a F/S / Academy first round selection requires the full points price which must use a 1r pick plus additional picks in round order to make up the difference. So, a 1r + 2r +3r pick but not 1r+ 3r even if you have traded that second round pick out.

Regardless of how. The AFL has to settle on a solution and if there are changes then they should be announced at least 2 drafts before implementation.
