Review R1: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly vs. Collingwood

I don’t think it will happen, but an option would be to drop Dawson back to half back when Soligo, Rankine, Peatling, Cummings or Rachele move onto the ball.

The key is about having player flexibility and being able to play more than 1 position.

Moving Dawson out of the position that he has been best and most impactful in, in order to keep a guy who had an ok game in the side would be a bizarre choice.

I’ll have more thoughts on tonight’s Crow Cast, but a few for now:

Not sure I’ve seen Junior played a better game. Along with Worrell and Cumming, kept us in the game in the first half.

Murray was great. Players need to sprint for the handball receive from Butts. And Laird.

McAndrew gave us a new look in the centre. Follow up was great. Just needs to learn how to mark.

Berry had our most pure clearances. Should’ve slotted that sealer though.

Cook barely made a mistake all night. Carried his pre-season into the real thing and can’t be happier for the lad.

Bond was missing 15 metre sideways passes. Hardly trying to take the game on. He also got smoked on the lead a few times and dropped marks.

I know we all don’t like Laird and his game was riddled with skill errors but Bond was worse.
Bond's disposals were a worry, but he at least plays on quickly rather than hatching the football.

Also, Elliott was quiet.

I haven’t fully got to watch the game yet but from bits I saw ANB seemed to have some important touches.
Played the Lynch connector role.

Thought he was in our best 3 with Milera & Worrell.

Just for clarity, who would that be?

One of Pedlar, Peatling or Soligo

Personally, I would drop Pedlar to bring Rankine back. However Pedlar offers a bit aerially and poses a much different threat then the other two, who play a similar style/role to Rankine only much less effective. So it might make more sense to drop either Peatling or Soligo. They might also look at going smaller potentially and drop/rest one of Walker, Fogarty or Murray. That would be the less likely option I’d say as key defensive positions are a weakness for the Dogs.

If we stick to the last in, first out and drop Bond, as you suggested, someone has to pick up those defensive minutes. If it’s Dawson as you suggest, we lose the obvious Bont match up, and we don’t have him there to mark and use the ball forward of centre.

I just don’t really get why you’re arguing this. In the vast majority of cases, when a first 23 player returns it’ll be someone of a similar position who makes way.

Adding Ah Chee allows us to float Rachele in the midfield more.

Rachele with 14 CBA attempts
With Rankine back this week, we have plenty of options to rotate midfield & forward depending on how the game is travelling.

Also, could move one of our better ball users to HBF.

Not sure they'll drop Soligo, Peatling or Pedlar. They didn't really do anything wrong. I think it'll be Bond - and Cook, Cumming, Dawson will all spend time at HB - Cook trained there in the preseason. Soligo can go on the wing a bit.

I’ve made my position on this topic very clear. I don’t have the desire to go back and forth for the next 25 posts, therefore let’s see what happens on Thursday night with selection.

Happy to put my hand up and say I was wrong. I’m secure enough in my manliness to say I got it wrong.

Its not a right or wrong discussion with this one I dont think. I wouldnt drop Bond, but I can understand if they do.

Maybe, this makes more sense than just saying last in first out.

There’s a few problems with this though IMO.

Cook has just had probably the best game of his career. He’s got talent but has struggled to find the right role, so I’d be reluctant to move him after he’s potentially found his spot.

Dawson will be really important on ball this week. He’s the only guy we have who can match Bont for size (except I guess Thilthorpe if he’s in there but that can’t be relied on). I’d be worried about needing him to play back line.

That leaves Cumming, who is not really a defence first guy in the way Bond and Michalanney are, so there’d need to be a significant structural shift to make that work.

This group slays another minor round demon and it's an important one to help bury those finals losses quickly. After all, we're in a period where a tough start could spiral into a lost season quickly. In terms of the game, it was a repeat of the qualifying final where after a scratchy first, the home team dominates the 2nd but lacks the end product to get the rewards before the away team steals a goal at half time and then proceeds to run away with it in the third. Was well coached from Nicks, especially as you could see those demons rear their ugly head in the second when we got trapped by an adjustment from Collingwood. Effectively, we did to Collingwood what they've done to us for most of our existence.

Great:

McAndrews took on one of the best rucks in the business and beat him pretty handily. Ruck work was damaging alongside bobbed up for 5 clearances and 4 tackles is a pretty good debut for the club.

Nick Murray hasn't got the plaudits in this thread to the degree that I'd like. He changed the whole game when he gambled for that intercept mark with 40 seconds left in the second before hitting a beaut of a field kick to Fog. Was very solid outside of that moment as well.

Milera was fantastic, and looks in great nick physically. Hopefully the body holds up.

Good:

I can be convinced about Rachele as a midfielder with performances like that. Ball use was a bit rusty, but was cracking in and doing some solid work in the clinches.

Worrell was a monster early with his intercepting.

Was quite happy with Berry and Peatling today. Both did a lot of yeoman work and made sure we didn't waste McAndrew's performance. In saying that, I'd love just a smidge more production from both.

Neal Bullen was industrious throughout the game and ran Collingwood's defense rugged.

Thilthorpe is Thilthorpe. Freak. I'm certainly warming to using him in the midfield as a shock move when the game isn't in our favour.

Cook had some big moments in the second half on both sides of the ball. More of that please.

Fog/Keays/Cummings/Max were quiet, but made the most of their moments.

Meh:

Rough debut for TMurray, who looked a bit too raw for Cameron. That said, freeing up Thilthorpe worked, so no issues on my end.

Pedlar had an almost game.

Disposal skill in the first half was rusty.

All in all, a very good win.

Yep - last in first out is a ridiculous idea
... and yet it is often right. Unfortunately for Daniel6, Bond wasn't the last one in.

In all likelihood, Turray was the last one in, preceded by Cook. Cook had a good game and definitely doesn't deserve to be dropped, and Turray was a tall on debut - highly unlikely to be dropped for Rankine on structural grounds.

In my opinion, the most likely to be dropped would be Peatling & Pedlar. Dropping Bond makes no sense whatsoever, given the lack of height in the Bulldogs forward line. We need all the small-mid defenders we can lay our hands on.

Peatling is probably a silly move if he was underdone.

I reckon its Pedlar
