For those wondering who TMH is, that is Harry Van Hattum who is currently seen as the likely first available pick after Cochrane and Walker bids.

He'd have to be a clear cut above any mids to pull the trigger.

Much easier to trade for a decent ruckman and that's all you need when competing.

Way harder to trade for a quality mid.
Tell it to Jordan Dawson, Lachie Neale, Josh Dunkley, Shai Bolton, Bailey Smith, Cal Ward, Clayton Oliver, Christian Petracca, Tim Taranto, Tim Kelly, Adam Treloar, Chris Judd, Gary Ablett, Paul Broderick, Darren Jarman, Greg Williams, Gerard Healy, Ron Barrassi,

and Will Brodie.

  • Dawson was an elite trade. Don't think the Crows or Swans even thought he had that in him.
  • Neale cost two 1st rounders
  • Dunkley two 1st and a 2nd
-Botlon three 1sts
-Smith dogs got bent over
-Cal Ward expansion gift
-Oliver damaged goods and average.
-Petracca three 1sts
etc etc etc

Now if I cbf I'd go through the cost of the last 20 premiership ruckman and it'd be substantially less.

So the point still stands. It way harder/more expensive to acquire an elite mid than it is a good ruckman.

Kind of wish the AFL would do away with the maximum list size. Let rebuilding clubs pay their better players at market level rather than over-inflated to reach the salary cap floor, and then let us try out more players on rookie contracts as a result.

If some of them hit, great. Then when we get better, we have to delist more players as they command better wages.

For me if there is the option to pick a possible elite level ruckman that you can bring in then you do it.

We have potential elite midfielders on our list already, granted there are still some question marks over them, but they're there.

We also have a young ruck/forward on the list in Sims, so adding a kid like HVH to give us a 1-2 punch in that can rotate between the 2 positions would be a huge advantage under the current ruck rules which are clearly favouring the more athletic types who can not only jump at the centre ball up, but can cover the ground and become a viable option in general play.

Finally with the way our cap space is at the moment we will have ample cap space to target a top end free agent to come in the compliment our list when we're ready to challenge again, which then allows us to use our draft picks to continue to build depth that hopefully allows us to have the same sort of sustained success that we had with Hardwick.

Who are the players we want to keep an eye on? I can get decent weekly stats for their games (not sure if this already exists somewhere, or in as much detail)

Walker, HvH, Armstrong, Daffy, Leys. Anyone else in particular?

I like Arki Butler and Noah Williams

A strong first up performance from Clancy Snell, leading a defensive unit that stifled their opponents and dominated in the air. Snell showed excellent judgement of the ball in flight along with a willingness to launch fearlessly, taking a couple of strong contested grabs and disrupting his opponents when he couldn't get hands on it himself. He was constructive with the ball, highlighted by a number of long and accurate kicked up to the wings.

This is a list that I started working on last week that covers the AFL academy kids that aren't club tied plus our academy/father sons
