I don't think Ro is slowing down at all. He has only ever been effective as a starting ruck and right now he's at the peak of his powers. That's why he tried to leave, because we decided to make him a backup ruck/forward when he should be in the AA ruck conversation.
Roma has never been a good tap ruckman. He played like another midfielder. He's far less mobile than he was, with probably one or two more years left.

He’s also not going to be in conversation for AA ruckman - if he was in the past few years, it’s not happening now.

We needed someone now. And if Gawn is a big rap for Tdk that’s enough for me. Still not the finished product.

Not sure keeping him as a forward/ rick was the way to go but that’s a discussion for another time.

We’re not going to agree on this - so I’m letting it go here.

Did great at defending against the best ball movement team in the comp. What we failed at, and continually fail at, and have been failing at for the last twenty years, is our inability to win the big moments inside the contest and get clean ball to the outside. Our Bont/Dangerfield/Ashcroft/Selwood still hasn't turned up on our list. Absolutely dying for a power mid. We just can't win those big moments.

And you can talk about fitness all you want, but I just reckon they broke our will by the end of it. Smashed in the contest when the game was on the line and had to chase arse.

Also. Am I the only one that is querying the reason they didn’t allow Wood’s goal after the Tauru mark?!

Like wtf?
How did the goal umpire not see that ball thump into the post?

The Ashcroft boys are 21& 19- age isn't everything. I see Garcia and Hall as having much upside, but Pou is a worry- doesn't play with any authority.
I’m really concerned with Pou, and I’ve been high on him, I just don’t know what it is that’s going to make him a great player. He’s on the slower side, he doesn’t get much of the ball, his skills and decision making aren’t the best (how many times is he going to blindly handball it over his head).

He may yet become a great player, but in the meanwhile I just don’t think he can be one of our primary midfielders. I would like to see Hall get more time in the guts because he’s a genuine gun and provides X factor and class we desperately need, and have Pou play that high half forward role and pinch hit in the guts. He should really study Josh Dunkleys game.

Can anyone try to make a case for TDK being worth 1.8mil a year over 8 years? I don't think we're any better off now than we were with Marshall as our starting ruck
Did you watch Marshall today?
You can't pick which one of them is the better player?

He kept Neale to a 61 ranking point, 19 disposal game, and had a game-high 10 tackles.

Last week he had the equal-most number of clearances on the ground.

We’re not beating many really good teams with our current midfield though.

It’s like taking a knife to a gunfight.
So, we're tagging a stoppage guy with a worse stoppage guy, losing the battle and calling it a win?

Garcia's been in at 81 centre bounces so far. He has 6 centre clearances. I'm not seeing it. If the other guys aren't good enough defensively, then coach them. That's literally Ross' job.

Good effort, frustrating result. Showed their class and ran over us in the 4th, could see the team coming off the bye and the one coming of a slog in the wet. Take our opportunities early when we had the territory and that’s a different game. Loved seeing us showing some ticker and back Naz in the first half, Ryan getting Berry then nearly killing Gardiner.

Wood’s goal being called back was a big momentum shift. Higgins turning his back to have the shot on goal from 50 and ignoring Butler really shit me. Viking up forward has to be persisted with, kid has it.

We're miles off it. There pretty much the bench mark and we couldn't even get close to them in the last.
We've got some serious good players but it's not coming together.
We were in front ten minutes into the last quarter.
Jeez there's some maniacs on this site.

Do you reckon there's some advice that Ross is holding back from a 30 game player that would put him on the same level as Lachie Neale?

Disappointed, but worth remembering this is the best team in the comp who can smash the next best team in the comp when they want to

Need more from Philipou and midfielders to take the most of our opportunities

RTB mentioned the youngsters have to rise to Nas. Similar to how Ashcrofts have risen to Mcluggage and Neale

Good messaging. Philipou needs to bodyline the ball more, a couple of key moments he fluffed his lines badly

I don't mind what Flanders is doing, he's never going to be elite but he's a more than capable

I think we have to be honest and admit this isn't the start we wanted, and it's a bit deflating.

Believe it or not, 17 of today's 23 players had at least 70 games experience. And two of those under 70 games were Hall (mature age recruit) and Carroll who are both 23.

Today we only had 6 players who are 22 or under.

Even in the first 3 games before Howard and Butler came back, we're no longer a "young team" after recruiting Ryan, JSOS, TDK and Flanders.

The concerning thing is, we're now a middle aged team, a prime age team. And we're still performing like we'll finish 9th-12th.

Our I50 efficiency has been ordinary all year. We need to get it right or we will not go anywhere this year. A key forward would help. Ours had been MIA for too long. Bloody frustrating to say the least.

Well, hard to fault our effort. Not particularly disappointed in this loss, all things being even we easily could have pinched it. Which is not a bad result for a young team against the advantaged premiers. Aside from a messy first quarter all-around we look to be getting into our groove after a sloppy first few weeks.
Losing Sharman to a concussion stung, as he was finally looking back to his dangerous best. Thankfully we have a convenient bye, so hopefully he can recover well and is right to go for our next match.

We seem to have developed a more physical edge which I like. Would not like to have Ryan flying at me...

Butler and Dougal did some good things on their long awaited returns, if they can continue to lift and cement a spot we will be better for it. Caminiti might have to come back as a forward depending on the availability and form of King and Dougal - he is good enough and I feel we still need another tall target forward. Tauru is going to tear a game apart one of these days, he just looks to have that spark.

So, a Bye this week and then we're back on Sunday, April 12 to face port in Adelaide. Hope for a better run then!
Not sure how you can say we could have piched it , when push came to shove their skills and game plan put us to the sword , we had a crack but lets not sugar coat it .
I guess you will give me another warning because i dont agree with you like last time

Just can’t agree with those who think we are miles off it or bang average.

I see such tantalisingly close potential with this side, and will be holding judgement for later in the season.

We have to work through this to get better. And sure many teams trade on potential but how do you discern them from the teams that go on to win the whole thing?

My two cents is there’s not that large of a gap between improving our game enough to win more than we lose. There’s not that large of a gap between 4-0 and 1-3 for us this season.

But god I will say, today being at the game near the Brisbane goals, I wanted to beat that smug team & they’ve risen up my list of irksome fanbases for sure. Hope we play them again this season.
The worry for me is that the season plays out like our matches do.

Tantalisingly close, as you put it, for a long time then a sustained period of bleh.

The pressure rating was high for both sides today. I thought we showed our inexperience by not having the composure to play through pressure. Again I thought there were multiple chains with one handball too many where we've gone from a good position to a bad one, or from a bad position to a worse one.

We're not far off clicking, but that's no guarantee that it will happen. Boys need to continue to work hard at that.

I feel like we've got too many playing a dour role first and an attacking one second. I'd like to see us flip that or even up the ratio. Windhager, Stocker, Garcia fall into that category. Not knocking them...I'd just like to see them release themselves into attack a little bit more. Stocker for example has a penetrating kick, and could be a very useful link in an offensive switch.

How good is a Tauru mark at the moment?

Young side has issues with inconsistentcy.

This is a side still in development

We faced a nepo baby club with all the help and fought hard and said meme club still needed handouts from meme umpires to shift momentum.

We are building something here lads and we will **** these campaigners up in 5-17 months time.

We're not young though, that's the thing.

We're an experienced team.

The numbers don't lie.

St Kilda's hierarchy can talk about long-term plans and they can spin it however they like, but the fact is they recruited 4 players who are 29, 28, 26 and 24.

They traded away our 1st Rd pick.

They courted Aleer, who is 24, before backing out and opting for JSOS who is 28.

They acted like we’re on the verge of a flag tilt- whether they admit that or not.

They opted for experience, and now we've got an experienced team. Not a development team.

And unfortunately, we're not winning!

I keep expecting Owens, Philipou, Wilson etc to spike and become the elite players they show glimpses of being and get disappointed each time when they fail to take a game by the scruff of the neck.

Not sure if my expectations are off or if the players are off.

Our middle is still very young and our list is very young.

We are a side that fights and yet is inconsistent until our young players get more games.

Ashcroft boys were the best players in their respective drafts .. forget about where they were picked ... they also have supreme older exprerienced midfield talent supporting them

I think a few in here need to take a deep breath a try and fully understand that it takes more than 1 to 4 years for young talent to develop .. especially through the midfield
