Of course he'll be slow, but he wouldn't have forgotten the technique. Being unfit is one thing, lacking skill is another.

Take it easy cheif. The main reason why kicking skills start to become shyte is because people tend to bulk up. Legs become more heavier, shoulder width much more wider, etc...

I have had the same problem this year, I have bulked up consiberly over the pre-season and i have lost my kicking technique. But dont worry they would get their technique back once they settle in their new body.

Just breathe :D

Oh and what makes you think Houlihan will be in the forward line? AFAIK he has been training with the backline...
And has also trained with the midfielders. I think you'll find many players work in different groups so they can play in a variety of positions. I wouldn't be rushing to conclusions after one training session.

Yeah but he mentioned that Houlihan will definitely be playing up forward.... the majority of training he has been in backline for some portion of it, so was just wondering how he came to that conclusion or where he got his info from.....

Thanks for the thread, I am not overly concerned about the skills due to a number of reasons, 2 of which stand out.

Firstly, I think you mentioned Stevo and Simpson as 2 of the four you mentioned as being the main offenders, you know they will improve and its just an off day. Its amazing with confidence after many Tuesday and Thursday (in a much lower comp) nights as soon as a couple of the top liners started dropping off on the skills so would the others. I think as soon as Stevo, Judd, Simmo start to strutt there stuff the skills session will if not improve, will at least look a lot better.

Secondly, do you think the intensity has increased with the guys going at it at match pace? I would be interested to know. I hope they are and putting themselves under pressure to simulate game day. Sounded like they were with the drill along the boundary the other day.

Anyway thanks for that, great stuff keep them coming.

p.s.

On another note a guy earlier posted that Ted Whitten said, 'dont think do', it was actually John Kennedy from Hawthorn bud, who cares anyway right they're not from here.:thumbsu:

Three comments:
  1. Great report
  2. I think we know exactly how much we missed Stevens
  3. Is AWG turning to the Irishman?
:eek:Setanta can eat me?

 There are kids reading this AWG.:D

i don't know what I would do without you Marc Smurf
I would have no idea whats going on with all the players if it wasn't for you
I don't get any bloody information about Carlton here in Adelaide
Keep up the good work mate

I would have thought that a round ball is harder to kick than an oval one, which is why they always struggle in teh Irish series.
Some of the players can do both.

You're all a bunch of henny pennys.

Why get your knickers in a knot over their skills in December?

The POW disappeared without a trace due to the weight of crap posts and knee jerk responses that are posted on this board.

Good to hear about Walker :thumbsu:

mmm I'm hoping the team can improve on the skills issue, when i was at training 3 weeks ago I was watching a drill where the defenders would pick up a ball close to the boundary and kick about 40metres towards the boundary to gain some space with someone on them to apply pressure....75% if not higher went out on the full which was pretty disappointing to watch, then again was the 2nd week back if i recall so didn't expect them to be nailing everything.

Good read, thnx for the update.

Pffft!

Talk it up.

You slam anyone, as ignorant arrogant, dictators who try to point out his kicking is no longer what it was....then post this?

Match day and training are two very different things, it's good to see that he is improving. I will be very happy if he can improve which is precisely what he and Ratten are working towards, but you don't have a problem with his kicking so this doesn't concern you.

where were the recruiters from
i couldnt tell as they werent dressed in uniform. If it makes it easier for you which it didnt for me, they were both dressed in PUMA clothing and shoes. Hawthorn perhaps sydney... Wasnt St. Kilda or Essendon as both those clubs were mentioned in conversation. I wish i knew though... sorry :thumbsu:

Oh and what makes you think Houlihan will be in the forward line? AFAIK he has been training with the backline...

been to most of the training sessions this preseason and on the majority of the time when the groups have split up Hoops has been going with the Forwards. Im not completely ruling him out of playing in the back line, i just feel that he will play a more predominant roll in our forward line next year. Gone are the days where you can only play in the one position, besides a power full forward... :thumbsu:

Thanks for that report, I love reading stuff like that being located in Radelaide, because I can never go to trainings myself. But I have to disagree on your opinion of Blackwell, I have watched a few bullants matches and he carves up. With a bit more muscle he could take the step to AFL. But still, thankyou so much for that.

Is it possible that you could give players ratings out of 10 on on future updates so it is faster to get a summary on how they are travelling.
next time if i remember ill give a rating system, but having said that writing something i fell gives a better indication of how the players are going to you interstaters rather than numbers.

R.e Blackers who's position will he take this year... Judd, Murphy, Gibbs, Grigg, Stevens, Carrazzo, Scotland, Betts, Jackson, Simpson, Walker Bentick perhaps Hadley... personally i dont think so and thats why i mentioned that he may struggle... :thumbsu:

See your starting to see what the discussion is about......oh and I see you've got an answer to your issues regarding Houlihan.

For a new bloke you really don't have much respect for what people are saying.

Really good report. The individual notes were handy. (Who were the scouts).

Some of the players can do both.

I get my knickers in a not General becasue they are professional sportmens and athletes and are not executing the very basic fundamental of our game. As hard as it seems this is their full time job and for those guys to continually stuff up is simply not on. I for one understand that hitting a target all the time is impossible, and im not saying im perfect, but still currently playing footy we had a training session the other day that i sat back and thought gees were red hot here, the ball has only hit the ground 4 times in a 10 minute drill. Im sure you boss/clients would get pissed if your not doing the very basics properly, December or September... :thumbsu:

Mark my words, Paul Bower will be a star

Things that excite me from these reports are the performances of blokes such as Jake Edwards, Shaun Hampson and Andrew Walker. Most of all though, some of the reports on our coaching. Love hearing about stuff like Ratten targeting specific problems and doing extra work such as giving specific individuals kicking lessons. As well as that, stuff like how our forwards are lining up and blocking for eachother. I trully believe we didn't have a gameplan with any tactics under Pagan. It was just bomb long. Ratten is creating specific ways of how he wants us to transfer the ball.

Thanks for the report Smurf. Just out of curiosity, what makes you say Jackson will definately be our tagger. What has he done at training for you to say this?

Matthew Kreuzer - ive said it all along will be a Forward come Ruckman. He is a better and smarter version of Kosi and his skills and ball finding capacity are amazing for a bloke of his size. Will cause a great deal of headaches in years to come.

MASSIVE call. Kosi, for all his vulnerability, is awesome in full flight and his pack marking is in the elite class. This is something I am yet to be convinced with Matty. Obviously very early days for the big lad, but the Kosi comparison is a big call

Great report mate - love the commentary and agree with most....hopefully this will be the year when our potential superstars are finally realised, ie. Gibbs, Walker, etc.

There is one thing though - I still think Carazzo will be very much up there with our elite onballers so not sure anybody will be classifying him a 4th or 5th option after 2008......he is an absolute gun and it seems (from all reports) that he has the right frame of mind to keep his brilliant ball winning ability and determination through 2008 and beyond

Thanks for the report again

Yeah good to hear, I hope you're right. Our forward line is imo too tall anyway so lets hope he can kick his 30-40 goals. I doubt he will get to that figure though you would still expect him to play other positions when needed. If he does play the majority of his time in the forward line you would assume that effectively ends Wiggin's career, and unless Russell can step up or play in the midfield I worry about his position also.

See your starting to see what the discussion is about......oh and I see you've got an answer to your issues regarding Houlihan.

wtf is your problem, no mention of Walker get over it.
I asked a legitimate question regarding Houlihan, I have actually attended training unlike you. I have read all reports and what I knew Houlihan was training with the defenders until it came time for KP work, show me where I didn't show him any respect?

Maybe it's where I told him he wrote a great report?

Bit of a switch from
Houlihan will play in the forward line this year

You also initially said it was a surprise that he went with the forwards but are now saying it has happened at most of the sessions so why was it a surprise?

He didn't look like he will definitely play in the forward line this year last week in match practice when he played in the back line.

At this stage of the year I'd expect him to be working on playing anywhere. I guess we'll find out next year but it's not as though he didn't play in different positions this year.

No suprise to me mate, just that it may have been a surprise to some supports who either havent been down to training or read training reports.

Like i have said throughout all my reports i believe he will play most of the year in the forward line with the possibility of moving to the backline to perhaps sure things up.
