Jhye Richardson

I don't have a problem with that

In fact I'd send Warner and Smith there too. Use this A series to get these blokes back in there and scoring red ball runs

Bowled without any luck so far this match.

Absolutely baffling that the Aussie commentators don’t seem to rate him whilst Vaughan absolutely loves him.

Probably just illustrates Hussey/Lee’s generations absolute obsession with the speed gun (Despite Richardson regularly hitting 140’s), whilst Vaughan would of seen Richo’s type much more on the county circuit.

I agreed with Vaughan when he said his first spell yesterday was probably even more impressive than his match at the Gabba, because it illustrated to him he had the control and skill and was mentally thinking of other ways to get the batsmen out when the conditions don’t suit. He was moving around the crease, changing the angles etc and was still able to keep it tight on a batsmen’s paradise.

It's interesting. Even England fans would agree that probably the main factor in us losing in England in 05 was the fact McGrath went down after a brilliant performance in the first Test. Brett Lee who played all 5 Tests was very similar to Starc over there in that he wasn't suited to the conditions, was far too expensive but simply because he bowled fast they wouldn't dare try something different. We need bowlers in the vein of McGrath over there, not Lee.

Now is the time to change that thinking and I do believe an attack of Jhye, Cummins and Hazlewood could be the difference in ensuring we keep England under pressure with good economy rates while still causing regular collapses that both teams are likely to face.

That should be the way to go with perhaps Jhye making way for Starc if we get a bit of a flat wicket like Lords or The Oval were last time, anything in the vein of Edgbaston or Trend Bridge however and we need to adjust. Jhye is a smart cricketer and I think he'll excel where others have failed in their first outing over there.

Very true, and the constant fapping over Starc’s pace even when he was going for 8-10 runs an over early in each of his spells.

It’s horses for courses. Pace is a bigger deal in Australia, South Africa and the Windies (now they have their pitches back to their best), but in England and NZ it’s more about control and seam movement.

If you average below 140 in Aus you probably need to rely on height/bounce or have other tricks (swing, sandpaper)

If there was a hot spot he would still have the standard recovery time to let it completely heal. A hot spot is practically a stress fracture.

Well still 6 months before the 1st ashes test, people seem to keep forgetting that.

Worst case scenario he may be in trouble for the World Cup. Could definitely be part of the A team tour

Brett Lee relied on pace and took 186 wickets @ 28 in Australia, Mitchell Johnson 171 @ 25. If you take out his incredible Ashes in 13/14 most of the time he was high 20s. Stuart Clark took 54 @ 23, Glenn McGrath 289 @ 22 and both regularly bowled 130s and used height and seam movement.

I don't think pace is as important as CA seem to believe. Quick bowlers who lose control get pasted. Lee, Johnson, Starc have all gone for 4, 5 an over without looking threatening as quality batsmen just use the pace of the ball to do the work for them. Shaun Tait used to bowl at 160 km/h and the ball was clattering into the fence half a second later.

The biggest problem our pace bowlers have is they don't adapt to changing conditions. Hazlewood will get into a rhythm of bowling 140 on a good length on one pitch and look fantastic, then the next match he'll do the same thing and it won't work so he'll keep doing it or just revert to bowling short balls. We need our bowlers to be comfortable bowling a fuller length without being hit straight because that's what will get wickets overseas.

I thought I added enough caveats in there that it wasn’t all about pace. Visiting sides tend to find it difficult if their bowlers are all around 130km, unless their really tall or freakishly accurate with tricks.

I fully agree that pace on its own doesn’t mean much. Richardson and Hazelwood are quick enough, but you are right Hazelwood seems to try the same thing on all pitches too much.

I think fast-medium bowlers struggle more here now because the pitches are so predictable and true. James Anderson and Stuart Broad historically don't do as well here compared to overall (Average mid 30s compared to mid/high 20s). Admittedly our batting wasn't top shelf but the Indian pace bowlers did well in the recent tour. Bowled a lot better to the conditions than we did.

Our bowlers are conditioned into trying to get the ball hitting the batsmen at glove height or higher. If you did a statistical analysis of the Australian pace bowling vs India I reckon 80% of deliveries if not played would have gone over stump height. If you bowl too full and there's no movement off the pitch or through the air then it ends up hitting the fence forward of square. I think if there were more pitches like we saw at Perth Stadium for the 2nd test you'd see more bowlers not just going for short and fast 9 balls out of 10. Everyone loves seeing a big fast bowler steaming and bowling with real heat but if you're bowling pies it doesn't make a lot of difference whether they come out at 130 or 150 km/h. You want to see bowlers using the seam, using the pitch, using different angles etc.

Interestingly we have guys playing List A/T20 cricket and doing really well with changes of pace, varying seam position etc. but it doesn't translate into red ball cricket. AJ Tye is one of our best when batsman need to attack but about 7th or 8th choice for the WA Shield side.
