How can you be too good at footy to be good at leading footy players :S
No ones demanding copy cats
Adam Goodes was captain. Wayne Carey was captain at 21 y/o etc etc.

Perhaps he just didn't want to be, leadership isn't everyone's cup of tea.
From what I've seen and heard of Bud he definitely seems the type that is happy being a leader within the team without having to do it in an official capacity.

You have an interesting name for a Swan supporter. That comes across as if you are taking the piss. We have a few Hawk supporters that post on here so you should feel at home.:)

Ah, hadn’t thought of the connection. Just an unsubtle abbreviation of my name.

I wouldn't have thought so. He's not a freakishly superior athlete, just a smart and skilful footballer.
Freakishly superior athlete is not what you said originally, you said 'freakish talents who are allowed to freestyle their way through their careers' - I don't think its a hard argument to make that Stevie J had freakish talents as a smart and skilful footballer that allowed him to freestyle through his career … I think it sums him up very well as he was renowned for his freakish ability on the field especially around goal that most other players were not able to do …

There is no argument that his freakish talents are very different to Bud's, but I think they were freakish talents in their right all the same.

Great to hear Rampe will likely get an opportunity to play on guys more in his weight division this year. I'll be interested in seeing a few things related to this however:

- will Longmire be able to prevent himself from playing Rampe on guys who he has played on for years now despite being out-matched physically (Josh Kennedy, Jack Riewoldt, Jeremy Cameron, Taylor Walker etc.) - ie. will Longmire be able to resist going with Rampe and trusting Melican fully to take those guys?
- for teams that have two excellent KPF's (WCE, Richmond), will Longmire play Rampe on one of the talls?
- how will the defence look in terms of our talls? Will Longmire really pick all three of Aliir, Melican and Grundy in the same side along with Rampe playing as a smaller defender?

What did Longmire say he WILL do in the article?

It all depends on fitness and therefore who is available.

It sounds like Jackson Thurlow is shaping up as the HBF replacement to allow Mills to move into the middle. I see Reg, Aliir and Melican all fighting for two spots as our KPDs and Lloyd, Rampe and yes, even Smith as starters.

I'd like to see the starting defensive six look something like.

FB : Smith Melican Rampe
HB : Thurlow Aliir Lloyd

Reg as an experienced backup, Jones and McVeigh off the bench.

I find it interesting that people (not targeting you S120) think that Longmire is oblivious to the stuff that gets brought up all the time on here, like a premiership coach can't recognise the fundamental issues. Horse knew that Rampe was fighting in the wrong weight division but he was the best option with other key defenders out and he said so multiple times. You could argue that Aliir should have been brought back earlier, I'll give you that, but we're not privy to the internal workings of the club. I know we're here to over analyse and debate because we all love doing it but give the bloke the benefit of the doubt that he can see the bleeding obvious.

That's not necessary for him to say in this instance because it's about Melican.

But everyone knows that Longmire is apparently too defensive.

Even though this stats table on "centre bounce set ups" say he isn't compared to some of some more fancied teams last season, including the 2017 premier Richmond, who have the much lauded assistant in Caracella being credited with their success & who many of the self proclaimed genius' on here want to replace Longmire with because Horse is too defensive.
Well go f .k .ng figure.
You can't make this sh.t up

I say don't worry what Horse will do because it is still competitive enough to challenge for a p'ship in any given season should our key players stay healthy & no matter what rule changes are thrown around & introduced.
Most importantly while we are rebuilding our list. Again, this doesn't just happen by accident.

Relax. I'm not criticising him. I'm laying out some more specific decisions which he wasn't asked about.
I am relaxed and I don’t particularly care whether you’re criticizing him or not. I just asked a question.

I have no words because I have no idea what you’re on about!

There is no argument that his freakish talents are very different to Bud's, but I think they were freakish talents in their right all the same.

Then you misinterpreted my original post, because I was talking about their athleticism. Buddy's training was incredibly limited last year yet he was able to lace up every week and still dominate for large portions of the season. His whole career he's been a big, strong player who is also incredibly quick and agile. That's a cocktail rarely found in footy. Stevie J, while freakish with his smarts and skills, was not a unique athlete. He didn't possess any natural weapon that could gift him games when all else was failing. There are very few players in history who have that ability, and Buddy happens to be one of them.

Who cares about the ifs and buts, worry about that later. I'll just be bloody glad to finally see Aliir and Melican in the same back-line! Considering most of us (surely all of us?) see them as the two future staples of our back-line, it's crazy we haven't yet seen them play a game together. Not only that, but on both occasions when they've been brought into the team, it's been at the other's expense (Melican debuted after Aliir was dropped in 2017, Aliir returned after Melican's season-ending injury in 2018.) Time these mortal enemies come to a truce :)

Pangloss (n) Panglossian (adj)

A person who is optimistic regardless of the circumstances.

‘as factories moved out of the US in the 1970s, the Panglosses of the day called it progress’

  • ‘This is all part of a Pangloss view.’
  • 'Horse is the best of all possible coaches'. Tedeski
  • ‘Brad Setser and Nouriel Roubini portray us as modern-day Panglosses for expecting an orderly adjustment of global economic imbalances and sustained U.S. hegemony.’
  • ‘One needn't be a Pangloss to dismiss the notion that the world can ever get ‘better.’’
  • ‘By the novel's end Pawkie, like a Scottish Pangloss, is announcing that reform is in the air and that the world is becoming better and better.’
  • ‘The President is ineligible for a Panglossotherwise he'd win it every time.’
