Freo played a bit of an interchangeable defence style in the GF. So defenders slid off one and on to another quite frequently.
-
Johnno played on Gunston and Roughead, when they were at their quietest. McPharlin played, as usual, on Buddy quite a lot. Johnno did such a good job, both defensively and offensively, they started to go decoy on him and draw him away from the play where they could. Dawson got beat in a number of one on one's by Gunston. Duffield played on Rioli at times, but others did too.

I’d like to see below for round 1 (obviously injuries will come, but it provides good cover/ rotation. I have excluded SHill, Blakey, Sandi and Harley)

FB Wilson Hamling Logue
HB Duman Pearce Ryan
C BHill Mundy Langdon
HF Walters Tabs MCarthy
FF Lobb Hogan Switta
R Darcy Fyfe Conca
INT Brayshaw Cerra Cox Coyler

NIL
Tucker Bewley

INJ
Sandi SHill Blakey Harley.

There's no way we go with Logue, Duman, Cox, Taberner and McCarthy assuming all our talls are fit, only 2 or 3 of them will play.

In Banfield, Out McCarthy
In Bewley, Out Duman
In Giro/North/Tucker/Hughes, Out Cox

I’d say Ibbo is more comparable to Luke Ryan. Both can play taller than they are, great intercept of play. Ibbo a bit quicker but Ryan’s kicking is a far better weapon. I rated Ibbo as above average in a great backline, whereas Ryan is already above average in a young backline. I think Ryan will surpass Ibbo in terms of quality by either end of this year or next.

Duman is more your Duff type. Not overly quick or the strongest one on one, but reliable with the ball in hand. Duman has a lot to go to catch up to Duff, but the signs are good already. Definitely not complaining about having them both on our team.

I also don’t see the fascination with resting mids in the backline. I’ve always thought a set back 6/7 is more favourable and you should rest your mids forward/ bench. I agree it’s great to throw future midfielders in the backline as a learning curve, with stints on ball, but it should be for a season, not half a quarter.

Brayshaw, Cerra and Coyler to cover M/HF/HB when players rest/rotate.
Cox to cover KPP F/B when Lobb rucks or other forwards / backs rest

There has been a lot of talk about too tall etc, but we need to take into account how the size and shape of players have evolved over years ( hell.... I’m 6’1” and my 11 yo son is already 5’5...evolution? Or wtf is being pumped into chicken these days?!)

My point being is that no longer are FPs sub 6’.
Our midfielders are all previous days KPP or R size.
The Forward line may look too big/ heavy, but if you look at most backlines it matches up on size. Even our own backline matches up well on our forwards on these terms

Wilson/ Switta
Hamling/ Hogan
Logue/ Lobb
Duman/ McCarthy
Pearce/ Tabs
Ryan/ Walters

We may get a miss match against some teams, but that is why we have depth in the squad.
All this stuff should be in the Round 1 Preview thread, not this thread.

Swita and Banfild could add significantly in the pressure department. Also, if Lobb is rotated like in the way I think he will. He could end up playing 25% ruck and 60% forward with 15% bench. With rotations of tabs and Hogan spending 15%ish on the bench as well it very likely the big three will be on the filed together for 50%ish of game time. Means we can go for a quicker speedier look for long period and a taller structure for others.
Whilst I would like to see Banfield at HF, I think he'll be tagging given the injuries to Blakely and S.Hill. I think Lyon will try to curb those losses by nullifying an opposition midfielder until at least Blakely can return.
Swita/Colyer/Walters/Matera is who I see up in the forward line with stints by Fyfe and Mundy as the medium tall and of course joined by the tall lumber of Hogan/Lobb/Tabs.

Training/JLT with determine likely starters but I’m pretty confident HLT will be a three prong attack thAt will stretch most defences with the new rule changes!

Is Banfield quick enough to play that role in the forward line?

If not, I think he will struggle.

do you think Fyfe will play predominantly forward due to that latest injury?

(not gonna be cruel & keep you hanging with this poor attempt at humour)
in AFLX to Jezza Cameron? :greenalien:

My guess is Conca as the tagger and Banfield as the defensive half forward. What role do you see Conca playing?

That was my feeling as well. Duffield isn’t a one on one defender and Gunston creamed him.

Gunston got robbed of the norm smith, Lake got it for the floating looseman which seems to get alot of votes but Gunston was the one who won it for them.

Conca will rotate with Cerra out of the backline. It is what he did at Richmond, and what Cerra did for us last year.

Ibbotson was serviceable but for those who think he would have been the difference playing on Gunston in the GF is laughable. Ibbotson was nowhere near the player Gunston is.
