Perfect description. AFLWs most off putting aspect is that it does not stand on its own two feet.

The game as a spectacle is horrendous and doesn’t belong on TV, Radio or in the newspapers.

Actually the Nordic countries really can't be classified as socialist. Their marginal company tax rates are similar to the OECD average (23%). Sweden's (22%) is actually lower than the OECD average. Also, the USA has a higher top marginal income tax rate than that of any of the Scandinavian countries. What allows the Scandinavians to raise a higher % of income tax (relative to GDP) than the USA (and Australia) is that they tax everyone at a higher rate (that is, their tax system is flatter, but higher).

Let us not forget that the Scandinavian countries (which are the poster-child of the left and, famously, Bernie Sanders) basically do sweet FA when it comes to military intervention overseas (they leave that to the Americans), which allows them to spend more on universal health care, welfare and the like. Sweden/Finland/Norway/Denmark average around 1.3% of GDP on defence compared to the USA 4.7%. So if you're going to leave 'combating the threat of terrorism' to the USA, it's a little disingenuous to then lecture the USA about the need to increase taxes in order to spend more on society's most vulnerable.

Both of our major parties occupy a tiny thought bubble in the centre. THe only reall difference between them is who pays them their bribes, and some of that is the same too.

Our media occupies an ever so slightly larger bubble around them. Moderately left or right leaning politicians and commentators keep their heads down and their mouths shut, and pretend they are in the centre too.

Consequently, we only ever hear from the centre, and from the extremist left or right whack jobs. Which the centreist pollies and commentators love, because the far left and the far right are so terribly easy to sneer at.
