The experience in the tiger's team and greater running power showed. It's not so much that they could cover more ground - they could just do it at the right time in waves and at high speed. By the last quarter there were some navy blue witches hats out there. There's only one thing that can get us to the same point and that's time. And the waiting game sucks...

I'm OK with giving the Garlett in defence and Ed Curnow up forward one more game to see if it starts to click. If it's the same result, we have to make changes. Fasolo was a bit disappointing but he should have a few more bites at the cherry before we start thinking about dropping him IMO.

A lot of good signs from younger guys: Harry, Walsh, SPS, Cuningham. And some older ones too: Thomas is justifying his spot and Murphy really picked it up in the second half to show some of his class.

Dow needs some serious work on his goal kicking on the run and from set shots. It's not a flaw you want to let fester.

Also, not enough love for Koutafield. He was mixing it up with the best of our midfield and it's his bloody third or fourth game or some shit. He is gonna football good. Real good.

Are the teams out for next week yet??

Thought Harry presented well, though he looked a bit disinterested at times. Zac is important with that ability to slip away. Walsh and Setters with 30 games will be causing problems. Liked a bit, disappointed with a bit.

Not too bad blue boys.
Thank the gods we picked up Newman, his spoiling was amazing. Good ball use too.
Jones was probably BOG at half time
Weits looks like a gun
Setters will be great once fit
Cuningham whilst he didn't finish off his opportunities was involved and looked dangerous
McKay was great 2nd qtr onwards, most dangerous forward for us and body work much improved
McGovern worked his way into it
Walsh was as good as we could have hoped as previously mentioned
Kade was good without being great, very important player for us
Murphy was good but needed more
Cripps was great, Cotchins knee to the head rattled him a little IMO

SPS great 3rd but needs to impose himself more
Thomas had good impact but lacked hurt factor
Gibbons good pressure but needs to do more when he has the ball, kick has too much hangtime entering the 50 if not placed well
Dow was better in the link up play as opposed to the clearance work, too many fumbles but young and needs time and a bigger body

ECurnow is not suited to playing forward, should have been playing mid and using his running power more IMO
Fasolo not enough pressure, was able to finish a goal though
CCurnow had a night to forget, not worried about him

Harder to see things from the couch but pretty happy we were showing good signs against quality opposition, go blues

Check out his stats from your initial post - I was quite shocked. 1 Mark ? He was clearly running under the ball, and they replayed one several times where he literally let it bounce out of his hands.

There was something very strange about his game tonight.

In two years time ... Cripps, Dow, SPS, Fisher, Walsh, and Setterfield will be absolutely destroying teams!! That midfield is seriously going to be insane. I’ve seen enough from all of them to be very confident about this. Add in O’Brien, JSOS, Kennedy, Cuningham ...

As for now bring on rd 1 ... that was JLT3 right?

I at no point thought before the game that at some point I would say -" we are a chance here" yet in the 3rd taking into consideration such a disaster we had in the 1st qtr- I did indeed say those words and for that alone I am not disappointed in the result

Yeah, the game plan gave us hope. Bolts said last year we want to be defined by our pressure. I think we've given a good glimpse at how that may look going forward.

Plenty to enthuse about.

Looked like a major blow out early on, worked our way back into it, then maybe went that extra handball a bit too often.

Had a ton of the pill, but this is a young team finding its mark.

Scoreboard pressure is the concern, players have to get selfish around the sticks.

1. I’m sick of seeing Marc Murphy laughing and smiling with the opposition after we lose.

2. We got reamed by the umpires in the first quarter.

3. I’ve stuck with and advocated for Bolton since the start, I’m not convinced after tonight. They lost rance and we closed to within 13 points and he kept them playing that slow down the side kick to the pocket from a kickoit game plan. He has no idea seriously.
Are you for real what game where you watching, for a team that has just been put together they are at a great stage with a game plan that is evolving as we add layers and players, tonight was a great dress rehearsal for the year ahead and the positives out weigh the negatives by so much it is unbelievable that any Carlton supporters could not be happy with what they saw tonight, it’s alright to be disappointed and I am very dissappointed but have some perspective at where we are at and where we have come from, this was basically game 1 for this list of players and they performed very well overall apart from a few small lapses which will be easily ironed out early in the year. I personally am so optimistic for the year ahead and the direction the team and club are headed and I fail to see how others could not be after watching an admirable effort from a young inexperienced group of soon to be superstars and winners. The way ahead is clear and bright and most certainly coloured Dark Navy Blue. Well done boys good first up effort. 😀👍🏽

I was dows biggest fan at the start of last year. He fumbles WAY too much for a top line player. He is reminding me of a better sam kerridge. Absolutely killed us a few times tonight. He's set shot was horrid too.

Hope he pulls it together. Must be a confidence player because I've seen him do some judd like stuff.
Only a second year player. He will be a jet!!

Well I’ve had a quick look at what people think and it’s interesting.

I’m not going to post a tome as it’s not my style.

Football is a 4 quarter game and the end result normally favours the best team. Tonight is no exception. The Tigers were too slick in transition and we couldn’t slow it down.

As for Carlton. I was pretty excited on a number of occasions tonight especially when Murph and Newman snapped team lifting goals.

Defence was stoic and they were put under a lot of pressure tonight. Good signs from Weitering and Jones. Dare I say Jones played with a fair bit of mongrel tonight.

The forward line didn’t win enough contests when it counted tonight. Big H was impressive.

Our on ballers lifted after getting pantsed in the first quarter. Solid effort with Cripps leading the way.

As for our debutantes. Newman, Walsh and Setterfield were amongst our best contributors.

Plenty to like. I’m not reaching for the razor blades yet.

Good
Setterfield....very very good
Weitering....very happy to see him back himself
Cuningham...hopefully onwards and upwards from here
Walsh....wonderful composure and decision making for a young fella
Newman....great support for Jonsey and Weitering
McKay....kicking and marking a highlight and only gets better from here
Honourable mentions for Crippa, Murphy, Simmo, Daisy, Dow, Phillips, Ed

Bad
Charlie....worst game I’ve seen him play , needs to extract the digit
Fasolo....1 tackle in F50 not good enough
Garlett....Please lets give us this experiment before we destroy his confidence,he’s not a defender
McGovern....Inside 50 kicking not good enough for a player of his ability
SPS....Went completely awol in the first qtr, got better, but needs to tidy up skill execution and work rate
Fisher....Please for crying out loud put and end to these underground kicks, they’re starting to do my head in, good otherwise
Charlie disappointed me most of all by far.

Thought we were a real chance at 3/4 time especially with Rance out ( all the best to the poor bugger) but only one inside 50 in the first 15 minutes of the last was an extremely disappointing effort.

I can't help but feel a little frustrated.

We gritted and grinded our way back into the game and ran out of juice in the 4th.

It felt like when we were playing with a bar of soap at times.

Positives: Weitering. Walsh. Newman. Fisher. Cripps. Setterfield/Cuningham showed serious signs.
Negatives: Curnow. forward structure. Garlett. Harry in the ruck.

Such a frustrating game, not because we lost to one of the top teams in the comp, but because it was as if we had a mission to make every conceivable error/mistake that one can make in a game and even try and invent a few nobody thought existed.

Charlie had an absolute mare of a game, at times it seemed to me as though he didn’t even want to be out there. I put down his effort last week as it being a practice match, but that’s 2 weeks on a row now where he isn’t even putting in the bare minimum of effort. Does anyone have any inside mail on him because I’m starting to get a little worried with his body language to start the year?

Lastly, it quite telling that the 2 quarters where they smashed us was when we were intent on making dinky little short passes along the blundary line with no real plan what to do with it when we got it past halfway.
And the 2 quarters where we scored and cut them up was when we looked inside and found players in the centre.

After dominating the second and third quarters moving the ball quickly, why on earth did we come out at the start of the last quarter and revert to the dinky short passes along the boundary again.

Now that I’ve had my sook and got that out of the way, there was positives in the game, we definitely look to have improved our attack on the ball and though they are small patches through a game, we look as though we have a better system of moving the ball in those small patches, something we didn’t have last year.
What I’d give for a system of kicking inside 50 that isn’t just long blind kicks hoping for a big mark!!!

Perhaps I should post this intermittently throughout the thread ...

That is a massive advantage for Richmond. We did very well to compete as well as we did.
