Charlie Curnow just needs to clunk some marks. He legit gets his hands on everything. He doesn't have to take the spectaculars in large packs but simple marks leading up on the wing/half forward just needs to hold them. Think he is confidence player and didn't get off to a great start this game and never got going from there. If he takes some marks early in a game and gets confidence he has the potential to be anything.
I have to disagree. He legit got his hands to nothing last night. He jumped under the ball, jumped on his man, didn't put his hands up, dropped 2 easy chest marks, showed ZERO intensity, didn't chase at all. I heard his GPS numbers were solid but that was absolutely putrid from CC. If he's not right then leave him out, if he's putting up that drop him. Simple as that. There's nothing worse for a young team to work their backsides off getting the ball into the F50 (albeit with poor disposal)...for it to come straight back out with no pressure. If H keeps this up he'll go past him at a rate of knots.
I know it's only 1 game, but from what I saw of him last night something is way out of kilter with him.

If Ed isn't good enough to make our midfield, get him out of the team. He has no redeemable qualities as a forward.

He is one paced, lacks agility, depth in his kicking, can't mark. He's just no good there and was never going to be. Very strange decision from the club.

Get JSOS or Kennedy in the guts and move Cuningham forward.

Or give Ed a tagging role

Our forward line was our weak link last night with the small forwards a glaring weakness.
I agree. the problem is we simply don't have AFL quality small forwards. I've been shouting on this forum about this for a few years now.

cunigham's can be a good small forward but he's also a pretty decent linebreaker. i certainly want him close to goals but think we're wasting him if we just park him inside the 50. hopefully with a few games under his belt fasolo will start to show some promise.

JSOS is an intersting one. I think he could play that high half forward role pretty well but not sure if he has the running ability of ed. he's had 4 pre seasons now so he hasn't got the tank by now he probably never will.

Newman is the direct replacement right now, and he played a verrrrry nice game last night.

Just wish Doc was there with him
the best thing about newman is that he's solid defensively as well as being good with the ball. will be a very useful player for a few years at least. he's not just keeping the seat warm for some upcoming youngsters.

Ed is and always has been an extremely sloppy player with ball in hand - it’s why he’s been a tagger his whole career. Wouldn’t be mad if he moved back into that role.

Anyone saying Cripps wasn’t damaging as rocks in their head. I counted at least 5 times where he extracted and/or took the game on only for his teammates to bugger it up. Two in mind is when he won the footy hit Ed lace out running toward 50 who dropped it, another where he pulled the trigger with a corridor pass, got it back and sent it inside 50 only for another dropped mark (can’t remember who). If his teammates were cleaner he’d be as damaging as Dusty.

Totally agree it was a putrid game from Charlie and I hope it's a one-off.

Yeah apparently this was the rhetoric on TV, at the game it was clear that Reiwoldt was clearing the path, he's a smart player.

There's no way he would have marked it if lynch didn't, it was already past him
Was at home watching so did hear the commentary and was staggered to say the least .
Bit of a coincidence however that ex Tiger boys Taylor and Richo were commentating .

Really happy with where we're at. Need to remember we played a team that finished two games clear top of the ladder and have added T Lynch.
Things went against us early and showed great character to fight it out. Biggest positive for me is McKay. He reminds me of young Buddy. Just has something about him. Thought we should have used him one out in the square last night. Just looked so dangerous every time he went near it and has only just turned 21.

Watched the game again

Gameplan seemed to flow well most times, but with a young group timing of when to run and gun or play tempo hurt us at critical stages, but dropped marks/fumbles were momentum/goal killers. The defenders were our best unit, midfield didn't work hard enough defensively via running or poor starting positions when the Tigers spread, forwards had no harmony and lacked defensive pressure

Most of our backline played very well, considering the lack of pressure at times further up the ground. Three of our defenders ranked top 3 for 1%ers
  • Newman was clearly BOG for us. Composed, strong, tough and beautiful disposal under pressure. Said it before the start of the year, he is a lock each week, no matter who is available
  • Weitering was very good, positioning was generally sound and think he is in for his best season as a true KPD
  • Plowman, used the ball very well and was tough despite not reading the play very well early. Some of the negative comments regarding his game are just bewildering
  • Thomas has found his feet and speed again. While still making a couple of bad decisions, was in our best. Would really like to see him play as a forward again, but given our outs, needs to remain in the back half
  • Jones seems to be making some better decisions again, looked safe with the ball and got better as the game went on
  • Garlett is just not a natural backman at the stage, but again given our outs, I understand the move. I think he can play a pure shutdown role, unfortunately has no idea when to impact a contest (flew for a few spoils and the opposition were free out the back), or peel off when predicting us gathering possession. Disposal was really poor, even when not under pressure. Would prefer to see him on a wing
  • Simpson amassed more possessions than I thought, was solid and is still important to a young group
Midfielders

  • Cripps amassed possesions, but lacked overall touch, haven't seen that many fumbles from him in some time, yet never stopped trying, in for a big year
  • Dow was really good at stoppages and his burst is a weapon, reading the ball better, but needs to work on balancing before disposing by foot
  • Fisher game was interesting, did many things that generally would have gone unnoticed, his tackling was very good, couple of times on Martin was a feature, running to the right positions, but his disposal looked rushed
  • SPS was quiet in the first quarter, but he was not alone. Was actually one of 3 players that changed the momentum in the 2nd quarter and his disposal set up many of our forward moments. Like Plowman, staggering the negative comments he attracts, some that I noticed suggesting we should trade him
  • Phillips ruck work was good and did lay more tackles, but again either couldn't or wouldn't respect Nankervis on the spread, totally unacceptable. If MK is not fit to play, I would rather play TDK or Lobbe who will compete when needed
  • Murphy was better by foot, but for a player of his experience, needs to lead with the tempo of the game
  • Walsh never stopped running, which we all knew would be the case. Didn't seem fazed as a first gamer and will only improve dramatically as he builds experience. What he needs to work on is when to use the ball first time or when to take on a player, will come. A great career
  • Setterfield, once this kid finds his feet and touch, will have a great, consistent impact for many years. Have said it from the start, is Mundy like https://www.bigfooty.com/forum/threads/draft-poll_pick-5_v2.1151386/page-11#post-47769167

Forwards

  • McKay was our best forward by far and not for the goals which was purely a flown effect from his intent, equal 4th for 1%ers, equal 6th for tackles. If he keeps up this workrate and intent, he will be our most consistent forward, big year ahead
  • Charlie, fumbles and drop marks are one thing, but his lack of 2nd and 3rd efforts were unacceptable. If it was due to the frustration of those fumbles, he needs to sit down with is brother to learn the difference between workrate and effort. Expecting him to fight back over the next couple of weeks
  • Fasolo, lacked touch, which was no surprise. His inclusion goes against what the club has been preaching regarding selection. I understand it could be to fast track his touch, but I would have preferred that was built at the lower levels
  • Cuningham was really good in many aspects/stages, despite being quiet at times. His willingness and intent to get more involved was noticeable, which is a better indicator than kicking 2-3 goals. His reading of the play still concerns me, but think he will build a solid year
  • McGovern, he did what he normally does, low teen possessions with some highlights of strong marking and attack on the ball. In some ways his career mirrors Waite, without the undisciplined acts. His goal is to get more involved as he is a dangerous match up when on
  • Gibbons, found the tempo tough at times, but think he will find his feet. Needs to spend more time further up the ground
  • Ed, love his commitment but his is not a thinking attacking player. I understand with the 666 rule that more attacking players will benefit the team, but needs to start in the square when the heat is on so we don't have slow starts due to the lack of workrate, something that Ed excels in
The result didn't surprise me, more how we arrived. As a coach group, they should have been aware of how the Tigers would come out, so I would have shutt he game down from the start, taken the sting out of their adrenaline, then start to build momentum. The 2nd and 3rd quarters were inexpressive, players linked up well and ball moment was exciting, yet inconsistent. Last quarter we had our chances early, but those misses seemed to deflate the group for a crucial 5-6 minutes and the Tigers hurt us on the scoreboard

Given the expectations for where both sides will finish, I think we can still build a decent season, some good wins, some upsets and stages of inconsistency that will frustrate. Looking forward to having some of our better talent back in the side and playing well in the second half of the year

I’d like to make a few observations concerning the standard of umpiring last night. I’m not an umpire critic per se but it would be great to sit down with them and run through the tape to get an understanding of some of their inconsistent rulings and, what I’ll term, non decisions.

I’d have to watch the game back to be 100% certain concerning which quarter these incidents occur (as I tend to get really involved in the game).

First quarter. Balta marks around the centre. Thomas spoils. Umpire deems late contact and pays 50 metre penalty. Balta goals.

Third quarter. McGovern marks around half forward. Astbury is late. Misses the ball and hits Gov unfair in the noggin. No 50.

First quarter. Cripps is penalised for deliberately putting the ball over the line.

Same quarter. Rance is deep in defence and knocks the ball in a straight line from five metres over the boundary. No deliberate intent (bullshit). Throw the ball in.

Third quarter. And the non-decision that defies footy logic. Broad arches the back, makes a break for it and Big H (like a lion bringing down an antelope) lays a great tackle and brings Broad to the ground. Once he hits the deck he’s GAWN. Not according to the umpire involved.

I agree with our first 4 points, and there were quite a few other baffling, if not baised decisions as well, but the H tackle on Broad was only a couple of meters from me, and broad clearly handballed, in my view it was play on. However, on the flipside, in the first 1/4 one of the young Carlton players (I forget who, now) got pinged for HTB when he kicked it. Baffling indeed. Add to that not pinging Jacks deliberate blocking of defenders to allow Lynch's first mark and goal, and the momentum it gave them, set up the tiggers in the first quarter.

I was against playing Fasolo and Gibbons in the first round but now they've played it seems reasonable to give them at least 3 games to show something.

If that doesn't work out then bring JSOS and Polson back into the line up.

Also, it was the first time I'd seen Garlett from the stands this year. He needs to work on his positioning. He always seems to be where the ball isn't.

Last night reassured me that it’s not the ball winning ability that we need to worry about, it’s eradicating the lack of ball handling in a stoppage and improve our ability to be clean with it. We had our hands on the ball a lot at centre bounces last night but either chose the wrong option/overused the ball or fumbled the opportunity to go forward with it. We get that sorted and we will damage teams much more than we showcased last night.

Imagine thinking that Murphy isn't allowed to smile after his 250th after all he has done for the club and thinking it's an acceptable thing to say.
Exactly! ! Footy players are actually human. Unless of course we're talking about Crippa and Walsh, then we're talking Beasts!
Well done Murph.
I'm a Blue believer after attending last nights game. I'm going to enjoy the ride!
Go Blues!
