Well after watching the first two games of the season, my biggest concern about our selected side is the potential to be exposed, both offensively and defensively, when Bruce does his rucking stint.

I hope like hell we get the changes right because Bruce against Witts (39 HO a game in 2018) is a recipe for disaster and Joyce and Battle could be in for a tough time.

Bruce against Wright is bad enough but at least they then won't have a tall forward either if they win the centre clearance.

That selection suggests to me that someone is not quite right. I'm leaning towards El Capitan Valiente . No inside info, just pure guesswork.

Geary late out. McKenzie like for like. Wilkie defensive cover. One of Hind/Marshall/Clark to come in.
Hopefully Marshall!!

2017 National draft:

1. Rayner - Playing
2. A. Brayshaw - Playing
3. Dow - Played
4. LDU - Playing
5. Cerra - Playing
6. Stephenson - Played

7. Clark - Not playing
8. Coffield - Not playing

9. Naughton - Playing
10. O’brien - Not playing

I know there will be some to many that disagree with me but I don’t believe we are much of a chance to break out of the bottom 4 this year.

I’m not sure if it’s us making the constant wrong choice in regards to draftees but 7 of the 8 other kids in the top 10 are all getting the hype, experience and confidence of playing round 1.

Don’t get me wrong I understand everyone needs to earn their spot and just because of a high position pick doesn’t make you a guaranteed starter, but I’d imagine Coffield especially and Clark would be going into the 2019 season as flat as pancakes.

It would make it a lost easier if we were a top 8 team for them to break into but currently we are probably bottom 4 at best.

The second MKing is available for selection and passed fit I want him in the centre of the goalsquare, no more ****ing wasting young talent giving them 5 years to build their game, chuck them straight into the deep end.

Key defenders: Joyce, Battle, Wilkie (should be Brown, Carlisle, Roberton)
Small defenders: Geary, Savage, Webster, McKenzie
Ruck: Pierce
Inside mids: Steven, Steele, Ross, Dunstan
Outside mids: Newnes, Billings, Sinclair
Key Forwards: Bruce, Membrey
Small forwards: Gresham, Kent, Long, Lonie. Parker

Marshall over Pierce and Clark over Sinclair are the only two changes I would make.

But I’m not going to melt over them. Sinclair is still young enough and talented enough to want to see him be persisted with. Same with Pierce. It’s not like, Clark and Marshall are missing out on a spot because of list cloggers.

The only other argument worth making is 3 tall forwards versus 2. The match selection obviously rated 2 talls and 4 smalls as the most effective option over the preseason and have backed that in. Which I personally agree with. But surely all preseason they were planning around a 3 tall forward line. Maybe Parker plays a little taller now, he is medium sized.

We didn't have a ruck for the whole of the first game against North and Goldstein is a better player than Witts and we got the job done.Hit outs are so overrated.

Are you telling me, in the first game back for the year, after the debacle of last year -- I'm going to have to watch Bruce in the ******* ruck?

Or am I missing something? Who rucks when Pierce is knackered or worse, injured?

F F S
Battle will play ruck a bit too I think

Yes lets gift him games like we did with Paddy. He needs time to get an AFL body.

The funny thing about this thread is that Coffield was never in the running for this game. He played neither JLT match. He has obviously been told to improve some areas of his game - what they are we don't know. There is talk he came back unfit. Clark is unlucky but anyone that made up a best 22 would have realised he was on the edge. It's not a big surprise that he's not in the side.

Developing youngsters through the 2s can be a good thing. I remember I used to look in the paper every Sunday for the results of our seconds. A young 'Dal Santo' was in the bests every week. I thought who is this kid? Yeah, he turned out alright.

clark v sinclair is interesting, i think they're vying for the same spot

Sinclair’s ability to run out a game gives him an edge over Hunter right now.

If Dunstan underperforms, Hunter could also easily take his spot. But Dunstan’s JLT was clearly superior to Hunters and he completely deserves his spot his weekend.

It will be an interesting few weeks ahead with Acres, Hunter, Hind, Brown and Marshall all waiting to come in.

A lot of people call Clark Hunter. I actually think his name is the wrong way around. Clark Hunter makes much more sense.

Mav Weller has an AFL body! Just saying is all!

Being hard and buffed is far from the be all and end all when it comes to footy!
Clark playing would hardly have been a case of him being gifted a game! He is one of the few we have that is capable of being elite early!

My point exactly, we would have not played Stephenson to build up and “AFL body”.

One is a small. Completely different to 202xm tall who will be crashed into all the time and worse still coming off a reconstruction. Surely you see how unfair that would be on him.

I was talking about King not Clark. Im happy for him to play. Picked him to play.

I would have played Hind over DMAC and left Wilki out.

Hind is someone who I think can give us a different look as a team with his pace and run out of the back half and good ball use.

Would have selected Marshall over Lewis as well

Dinny has said on Twitter a few times the club wants Coffield to work on the contested side of his game. Sandy is the best place for him to do that.

Dmac was best 22 last year.

On this logic, Steven shouldn't play.
Solid point there, while DMAC was best22 last year and prob should be this year, but if what people have said on here is true and that Hunter's ability to run out a game is reason he wasnt picked, surely his fitness would be higher than Dmac who has been injured for preseason and therefore no minutes? Jack Steven a little different as he hasnt been injured so has been doing some training etc.

I guess my main issue with it is that we seem to always do this sort of thing as a club, dont blood younsters and then wonder why they dont develop. Look at geelong last night, in a tough game first up against one of last years grand finalists they play 3 or 4 rookies and have a bunch of 2nd/3rd year players while we are too scared to pick our Top 10 picks from 18months ago, just mind boggling too me.
Greatest example is Gresh, played from Day 1 and look how that turned out

Anyways, gotta get around the boys tomorrow, get to the game if you can and support the club, god knows we need it

Oh!
I'll just stumble back into my cave then!
Why is anyone speculating on King at this stage anyway? He has plenty of time to fill out and develop!
He is one we most def need to get right! We cannot afford another high draft pick bust!

100% agree - we aint making finals this year so get 22 games into Hunter, Coff, Long, Parker etc and get them used too it. Much rather have Hunter in side than players with limited upside like Lonie and Dunstan.
We select our side like we are a top 4 team, when we are bottom 4! possibly bottom 2 with the outs we have this year already down back.
