I haven't seen us so comprehensively crushed at stoppages like that since the Collingwood game last year.

Which is concerning, because Collingwood had Brodie Grundy in the ruck, whereas Hawthorn have a guy who on his best night is quite a tricky pub quiz question.

The most concerning thing was we were out coached yet again. Pyke got off too lightly with excuses last year. We won't win a flag under him. He is a poor motivator and technician. To expect everything to just click this season is Ken Hinkley like.

I said over summer that the club has read our list wrong. They think we are in a premiership window now but reality is that was 2017. We have half a dozen players well past there best. We dropped the ball badly with out list Management.

I love Eddie but he has to be told to stop flying for marks. The forward structure is all wrong.

It is Round 1 so early days but I think we are headed for another mid table finish and a rebuild
Clarko outcoaches everyone

The thing is we have plenty of decent guys in the SANFL but we'd rather play a cooked Jacobs, a finished Douglas and an ever-terrible David ****ing Mackay.

When our forward entries looked like they did today Eddie probably feels like he has to fly for marks, no one else is going to take them. I want to know what our ****ing opposition analysts do all week. They should be locked in a room and made to watch the Richmond v Hawthorn game from round 3 last year over and over and over. That's how you beat Hawthorn. Even I know that and suggested it in a couple of my posts. But no, we did what we always do against Hawks. Furious.

I'm enjoying us being above you guys on the ladder this week (for obvious reasons), but it won't last. It's the first round and your mob have plenty of upside and a coach who took you to a grand final only a short time ago. Even Carlton made Richmond nervous for a bit. Write it off and reset for round 2.

Hope for the best for Doedee. Cruel game sometimes.

Why don't they finish top of the ladder every year then? He has found a game plan against us which our coaching team have no answer for.
They don't have the cattle they used to, but we are a weak minded group which makes it easier

We didn't get crushed at stoppage though. It was the lack of run and spread that did us in, made us kick it on the stationary forwards heads

Has Tex really ever had a good FULL year since he did his knee. This injury robbed him of his man asset IMO - his mobility once the ball hits the deck and on the lead. He has never been a contested marking, crash and bash tall forward in fact I think he is quite soft in the air. I once predicted he would kick 70-80 goals in a year. He will be luck to kick 25. Unfortunately his legacy could be playing one of the worst captains games in a GF this competition has seen.
Not just his knee although totally agree it robbed him of spring and confidence. Age catches up with everyone and some age quicker than others. Also for some an Acl is like a knockout to a undefeated boxer, they are never the same and go into preservation mode after that.

Yep, we have no plan B when it happens, same result every time. Teams know you just have to put pressure on the ball carrier and slow the game down and we're stuffed.

We did though, the raw numbers don't tell the story, it was a tale of quality and quantity - we matched the quantity, but served up largely shit clearances that went nowhere, when they won them they waltzed away cleanly from the inside with great effect, even before hitting up their runners. Worpel and O'Meara gave the Crouch brothers an absolute footballing lesson.

This is always brought up when Eddie flying is mentioned. It may be why he's doing it, but it's still idiotic from him, and the coaching staff for allowing it.

He should not be flying. Even with an impotent forward line you'd expect a good portion to go to ground (the ones that don't go directly to Sicily's chest anyway). Most defenders are going to spoil rather than mark. His hanger success rate is deplorable, and it takes him out of the contest on the ground where he does his best work. It's like we've got the best pure 6 hitter in the world at the crease and he's constantly playing reverse sweeps for 1.

surely by now as a team we know when were under pressure we bomb it and yet Hawthorn still too uncontested marks

Just thought the skill level was so far off it today. Hawthorn were just far cleaner and like last year, they marked everything. It would have been great if our forwards could play in front and lead at the ball carrier..make the hack kicks forward work for us rather than against it
I saw worrying signs of skill level in JLT. Each preseason under Pyke the skill level has deteriorated. Sorry to bring up the previous coach but after 1 preseason our skills were vastly different.

But thats not crushed at the stoppages then is it.

I think everyone here agrees our ball use was sub par and our forward 50 entries were shit.

yeah I don't disagree with that, but I feel it was more on our outside runners than our inside players

No they weren't, seriously i like Walsh as much as the next fan. But there is no need to try and rewrite history.

We have no mongrel. No desire to move the ball forward with 1%ers. There was a few times the hawks just wanted it more. Got a jammy tap forward to gain territory which resulted in a goal. When. The. Fek!! Will this team get some mongrel!!!

LOL

I feel it was absolutely our inside players - their inside players broke away from ours cleanly and effectively when they won possession, whereas the opposite was not in any way true. We really lacked the grunt, desperation, and size of Greenwood today.
