Disappointed again but the signs are there. Doesn't feel like IF anymore but WHEN things will turn.

SPS looked like he matured as a player today.

McGovern showed great on field leadership.

Weitering looks really strong and determined.

Jones...underrated.

Next week - win against the Swans. Go Blues!

Polson is not AFL standard; not a forward, not midfielder, not a tagger. Should not play another AFL game this year unless injuries dictate his availability as absolutely necessary.
You must have been watching a different game to the rest of us.

Good
  • First quarter was brilliant. So exciting to see what we're capable of producing. Hopefully it helps the players build some belief.
  • Good to see Paddy Dow nail a set shot. That's been a weakness for him so far so to have the opportunity and nail it is very encouraging.
  • Weitering - becoming the dominant defensive presence we were hoping for.
  • Harry's clean hands in the air.
  • SPS' clean hands on the grounds.
  • McGovern's tackle and goal in the 3rd. Crunching.
Bad
  • Charlie's knee
  • Our ability to just do the wrong thing at the wrong time. We have the ball locked in our F50 and we give away a careless free and then compound it with a stupid 50m penalty. Or we have the free kick and we don't get back off the mark and end up having a rushed kick. Just stupid, avoidable mistakes that cost us field position and momentum.
  • Too many times we tried to kick the ball off the ground instead of committing our body to the ball
Overall, we've now won 4 out of 8 quarters this season so it's been a positive start. Can only dream of what could've been with Kreuzer, Docherty, Marchbank, Williamson, Cuningham (rd 2) and Pickett being at full fitness.

Please, I beg all of you, do not say “honourable loss”...

Nothing honourable about this. I’ve remained staunch, and defended this team for years now. Even in the face of 100 point losses, I’ve seen the positives. But I’m starting to lose patience.

We have a collective mindset that one, two, two and half quarters in enough. We think that SOME work is ENOUGH work.
This is poor. Last week was poor. It’s not youth, it’s not inexperience, it’s not talent, it’s not even game plan. It’s a poor mindset.
Until we learn to play FOUR quarters of football, we’ll remain a bottom four team.
No more excuses. We should’ve won this game. But at three quarter time, just like last week, we as a team, believed our work was done. Not good enough, Carlton.

Thomas is probably the only player in our side who is desperate for four quarters. His best is clearly behind him, but he has more intensity and determination than all of his teammates.

Murphy has been a great servant of our club. A soldier and warrior under extreme duress. And I have a lot of respect for him. But he’s done. He’s now a liability in every sense of the word. It’s time to thank him for his exceptional service, and move him on immediately.

Harry will a once in a generation player.

Cripps’ career will be over in three years if we don’t get him some help soon. He already has too many hard Kms on his clock.

I’m still excited about our future. But we need to understand that footy is played over FOUR quarters. No more excuses. No more talk.

FOUR ****EN QUARTERS! that’s all we want to see.

Crunched in the middle of the ground, need more 30 touch mids can't just have Cripps.

The club knows it that's why we have chased rockliff and Shiel, another senior mid would have got us there today.

Brilliant defensive effort considering the amount of ball that come in, up forward fas isn't doing enough get jack in for him and play Curnow in the middle ffs he needs to get high possession count and chop out Cripps.

Let’s be realistic. BB won’t drop Murphy. What he can do is minimize the damage he can do by not having him go through mid and leave him in the forward line. Kennedy will be important to help cripps with the clearances.
Unless Fas kicks at least two next week, he needs to go to the twos.
Garlett I’m still not sold on - can be sloppy at times and we can ill afford that off the HBF. Not sure if there’s a suitable replacement but I don’t see him as a long term prospect for that role.
There’s a lot to love and a lot to hate. But I dare say we need to win against Sydney or else it’ll be a loooooong year

Watch the game v Port Adelaide tonight and you will change your opinion. Polson was very handy indeed. Not his fault we lost, but the five goals from his play reduced the margin.
Funny that.......

Ya know Cripps made as many mistakes as Murphy, he just handballs more so it doesn't look as bad.

Apart from not getting the 4 points, so much to like. Again came back when we would have rolled over last year.

Geez loved SPS. Went hard at 50/50 balls whereas last year would have gone one handed. And most of the time came away with the ball and used it well.

Weitering fantastic. Amazing when you get a man's body to work with. Tough to push him off the ball now.

Gibbons and polson who I'm not fans of did well in their roles. Dow was decent.

My only worry is fisher. Not a worry so much bit below his best. Murphy was also fumbly again.

Garlett was ok down back. Some good tackles and improvement on last week. Might work, who knows

Should have clinched that one.
Just didn't take our chances when it mattered, plus that terrible second quarter.
Very similar to last week in that we had a run of goals and really needed to stick the dagger in but a poor decision here or there would stuff things up.

Forwards definitely look dangerous with good supply.

We are carrying a few passengers

Gibbons Fasolo and Ed can’t play in the same side

Pols was not too bad. I thought plowman did really well. SPS growing in stature.

Unfortunately we still 8 -10 games away from really clicking

Not sold on Poulson. Murphy disappointing. Garlett and Simmo meh.

No, the foot skill error induced momentum swing occurred in the same game that your all watching.

I think its mid or bust for Murph, he can't tackle and is a very poor chaser - both of which you need to do as a forward (and a mid too but i guess he still finds the ball).

Tonight should also serve as a lesson to anyone who thinks our midfield doesn’t need Coniglio or Kelly.

In 12 months will be interesting. A fit Kennedy & Setterfield supporting Cripps with an improving Walsh Dow O'Brien Stocker Gibbons SPS Cuningham will be a very good unit

I’m interested to hear from the Polson haters this week.

4 goal assists, 1 goal and a great chase down tackle.

Murphy on the other hand, 4 crucial turnovers in the last quarter when the game was in the balance.
Yep thought polsons game was ok. Looked a bit more composed with ball. Very good 1st qtr.

SPS best on ground. Unreal game by him.
Weiters, Dow, Crippa all great.
Gibbons and Polson really impressed me, Cam in particular.

Walsh played well in his second game. He's a gem.

Our two talls in H and Brackets were handy, McKay's hands are so solid.

Philips is not an AFL standard ruckman. Lycett and Ryder destroyed him.

Fasolo is a waste of a list spot, stay in the VFL.
Garlett and Plow killed our backline on multiple occasions.

Murphy literally cost us about three goals with his horrendous ball use. I would drop him but that wont happen.
Can’t argue with that

I said can contribute as much as Marc Murphy.

Neither of those players have played more than a single game as good as Murphy's bad games.

Fasolo and Gibbons would be on the chopping block well before Murphy... Add Curnow to that list too

You're really giving Murphy too much slack here, he was pitiful today, none of those other options turn it over as much as him.

Close but no cigar. The consistent ball back into our defensive 50 due to a lack of options in the 2nd killed us. We were bombarded and structure had faltered because of it. But kudos to the key pillars, esp Weitering in trying to keep them at bay during that time. He was fantastic again today, Weiterbot is back. Whether its a full pre season or a new fitness regime, he's back playing some awesome footy. Hopefully healthy mentally as well.

SPS and Dow were out outstanding midfielders for me today. Cripps is a given, but id highlight these two in the way they attacked the contest and moved the ball. SPS specifically with his poise and time on the ball, I'm looking to see him build off this now and keep doing those things he was showcasing today. Samo also working back in defence and providing that rebound off HB was crucial. It seems he's also benefiting from a full pre-season and the new regime under Russell. Gibbons was better today too, one of our best, don't see why people were calling for his head last week.

Give McGovern a 6-8 run and he will be back in business with what he can produce in terms of quality. Was really impressed today, as I was with H. Geez that kid has some of the best hands in the game, sticking those marks in the wet was insanely good. Plow did a good job on Grey and their midfield weren't as damaging in the second half until they ran over the top of us in the 4th. Kudos to Port's kids as well, Duursma and Butters look pretty good and Drew has stepped up. We have some players who need to reflect on their performance today. Its still early on but id be worried for a few of them if they cant step up soon enough. Think we can roll the Swans at Marvel if we are on our game. Don't be surprised if we do it. Onwards and upwards.
