Will be fun for Fremantle in that case as to what they would wear away to a white shirt black shorts Collingwood (as they usually always match shirt to shorts)
Why would we wear white shirt/black shorts when we play Fremantle? I thought this was only a thing for Carlton.

So here’s what confuses me
Geelong are wearing navy shorts, so at some point someone says “that means their shorts clash with Melbourne’s jumper, let’s change Melbourne’s jumper”
But, because Geelong are wearing navy shorts, and the shorts clash policy is more strict than the jumper clash policy, Melbourne are wearing white shorts that clash with Geelong’s jumper.
How come no one pulled that up?

Really, there shouldn’t be an issue than clubs having the same coloured shorts. If the entire uniform is deemed to not clash, then it’s fine.

My perspective is that Melbourne decided they wanted to wear the Redback for whatever reason (promotion, flog jumper sales, permanent away jumper) but like Brisbane they didn't make matching red shorts (or didn't worry, seeing as they can wear white shorts with the jumper in every other away match (minus Sydney and GC))

Seeing as the Cats tend to have no issues with shorts colours, this week we were put into navy shorts, seeing as two teams in white would've been a mess and it avoided creating a clash. I doubt Geelong would've kicked up a stink, we've been willing to wear white shorts (starting in the '07 GF when we accepted wearing white shorts to avoid Port wearing their clash). It's different to what I expected, but for whatever reason, they wore the Redback and we wore navy shorts

We did look great in navy shorts though, where possible I like to see us wear them, but I've got no issues in wearing white every week. Next home game vs GWS will be interesting, we wore navy shorts in our first home match against the Giants in 2012 but have worn white ever since. It will confirm whether Melbourne caused the navy shorts or whether Geelong have kicked up a stink

Why couldnt melb wear blue shorts?

They probably could have in theory. But, the Redback with white shorts is most likely their official away kit, so when they were told/decided they were wearing their away kit by default they went with white shorts and didn't think anything of it

Same with Geelong, we used to wear navy shorts at home to Melbourne so when we were told/decided home with navy shorts there was no real though put into the fact that it's against the current trend

It took me a while to get used to Geelong in permanent white shorts, but I liked it. I thought it was a clever decision to effectively say, "we're going to be the all-white team" and never need to wear (or even produce) a clash guernsey. I also read somewhere that they were happy to do so as Geelong used to wear white shorts before the VFL introduced the dark-shorts-home, white-shorts-away system. I actually now hope Round 2 was a one-off because the AFL's recent "all dark" versus "all light" approach was starting to work really well after years of teething problems.

Unpopular opinion around here but if it's your home game, you should be able to wear whatever you want.

This light/dark thing means Collingwood can't wear their retro look, North Melbourne wear some abomination for a home jumper... wouldn't shock me if the Cats started opening the up to the idea of a navy based jumper now.

It's not even properly enforced either – the Hawks would wear their dark inverse with white shorts a fair bit.

Just make it a definitive rule – extending to the big Victorian teams. Essendon will need to wear red away to the Toiges and Blues or at least red shorts to Collingwood.

Every club should just have a jumper set that allows for no clashes. This isn't the Premier League where teams change every year and home strips even change their colour balance every year. You know who wears what at home. If that means Freo need a green jumper to wear against Geelong, Adelaide need all yellow against Brisbane Lions, whatever.

Isn't that the opinion of most people on here?

Away team accommodates the home team, that's just common sense.
My feeling is more are happy for the home team to get whatever jumper they like and then wear shorts that accommodate the away team wearing a contrasting jumper.
Eg - Geelong choose to wear a white jumper, Melbourne choose to wear a navy & red jumper (which doesn't clash with white), Geelong therefore wear white shorts; Geelong choose to wear a white jumper, Gold Coast choose to wear a red jumper, Geelong wear navy shorts as GC aren't using navy.

Umpires in yellow in a Hawthorn game?? The AFL are colour blind!
They allow Richmond and Carlton to wear black and almost-black, so yellow and gold = no worries!
EDIT: Just looked - umps are in their standard green, which they've always(?) worn in Hawthorn games.
Not that they should when they have forest green too thesedays.

Purple bottoms and a white jumper would look sick. Would also placate the whole sponsorship arrangement.

The chevrons on the Fremantle jumpers look bigger and lower this season too. Rate it.

I guess the rationale with Freo is against everyone but Sydney/Geelong/GC they clash to some degree or other so the white has changed from being an "away kit" to a "clash kit". This being the only game that changes.

This is an awesome jumper matchup: full red kit vs full purple kit. We need more matches where both teams wear coloured shorts (or in the Cats case, jumper-matching shorts), they're fantastic

GC vs Freo today is probably my second favourite combo, West Coast in royal wings vs Sydney is my favourite

It's a good match up.... But doesn't follow Freos Home and Away set up as white would be a good option too. I have no problem with it, just not what freo do.

Essendon and Richmond have worn clash jumpers against each other for years.

Big 4 matchups have become weird.
Essendon versus Richmond is a clash, clash rules apply.
Collingwood versus Carlton is a clash when Collingwood is away but not when Collingwood is at home.
Collingwood versus Richmond is a clash when Collingwood is away but not when Collingwood is at home.
Collingwood versus Essendon is never a clash.
Carlton versus Essendon is never a clash.
Carlton versus Richmond is never a clash.

Consistency.

The AFL is consistently weak with the 'big 4'. Carlton is the biggest problem, and Pies best at wearing their clash.
