I think we need to add a tall defensively. Austin or Joyce in for Mckenzie for match up reasons.

The news of Dunstan TOG suggests he might have to make way. It’s either injury or he fell out of favour mid game and his lack of flexibility meant he couldn’t be used elsewhere. Could see Clarke come in.

I think Marty Parker may enjoy turning it on in front of his home crowd. Expect a big one.
Against teams that would've passed on him in previous years, too. Especially Fremantle.

Obviously it would be really ideal to have Jake the Snake back, and Roberton available, but that’s not the case, so if we’re looking and size and athleticism-suitable defenders, it’s probably...

Lobb (207cm 106kg)
Rowe (199cm 98kg)

Taberner (199cm 97kg)
Rowe (199cm 98kg)
Austin (196cm 92kg)

Hogan (195cm 100kg)
Brown (196cm 99kg)
Marsh (194cm 93kg)
Joyce (195cm 90kg)

McCarthy (192cm 92kg)
Wilkie (191cm 87kg)
Battle (193cm 92kg)
Joyce (195cm 90kg)

The difficulty is, we simply don’t have anyone size and athleticism-wise to go with Lobb, so in our current setup, we either have to make do, or double team him.

Even then, some of the options would require multiple changes to the team, which I don’t think will happen.

They’ll be a difficult matchup, no question.

McCarthy - Wilkie
Hogan - Battle
Tabener - Austin
Lobb - Brown
So, only Lobb/Brown a big mismatch.. But Brown has the advantage in strength and experience..

So in: Clark, Austin. Out: Dunstan, Mckenzie. Both offers better run and skill/decision making..

you do realise it's our benefit they didn't pick Parker up...

this game is going to be extremely hard to win. in fact i think we had more of a chance to beat wce at home last year. i think we should give it a crack but if we are blown out of the water by half time, i think we should look to next week against the hawks. its about managing the season here. no point trying to run through brick walls this early on.

freo's midfield is firing. Fyfe is back to his best. Mundy keeps going. two big tall experienced midfielders who can go forward. Steele will go to Fyfe. they're running a mix of youth and mature discards to go with them. Brayshaw is a young up and comer. extremely talented in the cotchin type mold. they now have conca running through there too, who is servicable. banfield is their run with player, an absolute pest. on the outside langdon and hill are in ripping form. langdon is criminally under-rated over east. he's a very very good wingman. cerra is spending time on the half back flank. their ruck is sean darcy who is going to be a very good bullish ruckman. he's hard to move. but his weakness is the stoppages in their defence. he struggles there. lobb is the pinch hitting ruckman and will stretch us down back. that's a very good midfield. i can't see how we match it tbh. i think the key isn't shutting down fyfe so much. its more limiting the influence of mundy. ideally longer comes back in to match up on darcy but i don't think he will be ready. newnes has to go to hill/langdon and just grind them down.

up forward is where they've really improved. hogan, lobb, mccarthy, tabenar all big tall options. hogan under a cloud but the rest are absolutely firing. then you mix in walters one of the best small forwards going around now. its hard to match up on. we don't have the talls to combat that. brown to hogan. marshall could take lobb if longer is back or we take the punt and go for run. wilkie to dardy mccarthy. battle to tabs. geary or mckenzie to walters. webster and savage are going to be incredibly important to rebound on the wider longer ground.

down back freo are undersized but they're surrounded by excellent users of the footy. its a rebounding backline. hamling and pearce are excellent defenders with hamling somewhat undersized. bruce will get pearce. hamling will go to membrey. question is do we chuck in an extra tall like marshall here, if we can, to stretch them somewhat? forcing them to go in tall up forward and overly tall down back? ryan, wilson, cerra are all excellent users of the footy. we need to absolutely limit the influence of all three. for that reason i'd bring in long and look at even sending one of geary/mckenzie to play a completely negating role on wilson. parker to cerra, kid will be nervous after that hit on mcgrath. bring in long for the bigger ground and some needed aggression.

i'd be stoked with a win here, but if it's not going to happen, its not going to happen. we have bigger fish to fry in the upcoming weeks. we are after obtainable upsets, not impossible goals.

+1 Well said. Agree 100%

Yes both my teams win.
Ultimate weekend. We should have won by 6 goals. My other we'll should win they are highly beatable.
Wouldn't have happened too often recently!

On the game this week, the boys will have to guard against a let down performance as has often happened after a good win. Expect Freo to show more pride in their effort than Essendon and come out breathing fire early.

Same. It’s been very hot and humid up here and if either of the Qld teams have a half decent team they win in those conditions. Ironically, we finally got a cool change on Saturday and conditions were still warm but not particularly humid. Even so, you could see Freo run out of legs.

1) Geelong is nicer than Perth as a place

2) You said you would not have chosen Parker.

3) That being said, nice rant [emoji6]

One thing that absolutely must be addressed before the season progresses too much further is our lopsided free kick counts.

Despite winning both our games, we're currently 3rd (or 3rd last) in our free kick differential. Only Hawthorn (oh the irony) and Richmond have worse differentials than us.

At this stage of the season, we're clearly not losing the free kick count because we're being outplayed by the opposition. So that means either one of two things -

1) Our players are fundamentally flawed in several key aspects of the game (tackling/marking contests/etc), in which case our coaches need to rectify these problems immediately

OR

2) There is an inherit bias against our club/players, in which case the AFL needs to rectify it immediately

Last year our poor free kick stats got lost, due to the shocking performances of the team as whole. In 2018, there was no hope to crush, the team did that on its own.

This year feels different. I know we're only two games in, but I'm fully expecting us to be in winning positions more often, and to be "in" games for longer.

This will make contentious umpiring decisions so much more influential than they were 12 months ago.

Until we start seeing at least some kind of parity, it'll be like fighting with one hand tied behind our backs, and we'll lose games which we should win as a result.
