Can guarantee the standard of football will rise markedly from here on in. Youth and grassroots are the key.
Was at training this week for one of the country TAC Cup under 18 girls clubs. From what I saw, the skills displayed by the girls were about 300 per cent better than they were this time two and three years ago. The development work going on is tasking effect. In four or five years the bulk of playing lists will be made up of girls who came through the TAC Cup and academy systems and not converted ex-basketballers, ex-volleyballers, cricketers etc.

Excellent to hear. This is why I think those that are saying that expansion will spread the talent pool and erode the standard are wrong. The girls coming in are soooo much more skilled than those who entered the comp in its first couple of years that it can only improve.

I agree with your view of the "code hoppers" but lets not forget that they have largely been brought into AFLW to expose the others to elite standards off the field. You do have exceptions like Ash Brazill who was a star netballer and a now a star footballer. Like Erin Phillips, footy was her first love though and when there was no pathway beyond juniors they were forced to jump to another sport.

I'm hearing that our AFLW inclusion next year is making a few existing teams very nervous. No shortage of mad Tigers currently playing AFLW who would jump at the chance.
Good , I wonder if Tayla Harris is any chance , seems well ensconced at the Blues now , will be out of contract though so could be a chance

I was told there is a big chance but then someone else watered it down but not because of her connection with the Blues. Not sure who to believe.
.

I reckon they'll tighten up the rules on player movement after what North has done this year.

Nah, they will want to make the incoming teams competitive straight away otherwise they will face a mountain of bad press about expanding too soon.

Lets not kid ourselves, Pies were shit BEFORE they lost a few players. They are struggling along with some others in the same conference because of poor recruiting in yr 1.

For those not across it, Brisbane forward Sabrina Frederick-Traub told the Lions she was leaving to join a Victorian club last week. Report by The Age says we're leading the race. She could well be our first signing come Monday.

Surprisingly I’m really looking forward to seeing our AFLW team in action next year.

Never really been interested in the women’s but I am now, maybe it’s just because Richmond will finally have their own team?

Eager to see who we sign up next week. :)

So am I , is Richmond , is good

So what's the deal with us poaching other players? Is there a cap? What draft picks etc etc

Lets hope we can do a bit of what Noooorrrf did in the AFLW this year coz we are going to need to. From what I've seen we're quite away behind the other established teams.

Re: poaching - signing period runs from Monday next week (8-18 April). We can sign up to 12 players from other clubs, but most existing clubs can lose no more than 4 players each.

Re: cap - there's no specific cap, but there's three distinct salary groups with restricted numbers in each, so it's effectively a cap. But restrictions around non-season payments are basically non-existent. Many clubs employ players in support roles during the winter or help them find work elsewhere.

Re:draft picks - we won't know until well after the signing period. Last year the order was heavily manipulated to balance out clubs' strength of earlier signings.

Cheeky rumour that we've bid for the bulldogs Katie Brennan

Expansion AFLW club Richmond has made a bold play for Western Bulldogs forward Katie Brennan.
The women’s sign and trade period begins on Monday next week but on Wednesday the four incoming clubs submitted their wish lists to the league.

Foxfooty.com.au can reveal Brennan is a wanted woman at Tigerland and was on Richmond’s list. She is believed to be considering her options.
Richmond’s offer is understood to encompass the 2020 and 2021 seasons.

A dynamic and dangerous forward, sources close to Brennan say her decision is unlikely to be financially motivated. Rather the potential need for a fresh start could help lure her to Punt Road after three years at Whitten Oval.

The 26-year-old, who would be a tier one player at Richmond just as she is at the Dogs, endured injury-riddled 2017 and 2018 seasons capped off by a suspension that robbed her of a flag in the latter year.

She played all seven games in 2019, booting six goals.

Brennan is currently co-captain with Ellie Blackburn and losing her would be a significant blow for the Dogs, which won just two of seven games this season. It would also highlight growing unrest among established AFLW clubs regarding expansion.

Last season several teams were agitated by North Melbourne’s bold list management approach, while the Kangaroos just argued they were doing what was best for their club and were playing within the AFL’s rules.

This year the four expansion clubs will be allowed to sign no more than four players from any Victorian team, GWS or Adelaide. In addition they will not be permitted to sign more than eight women from Brisbane or Fremantle.

The Western Bulldogs best and fairest event is due to be held on Thursday evening and Brennan is expected to attend.

The player movement period is poised to be the most frantic in AFLW’s short history.

Gold Coast, St Kilda, West Coast and Richmond will join the league although it remains to be seen how the AFL will structure the competition following criticism surrounding its conference system.

The AFLW sign and trade period will commence on Monday, April 8 and will conclude on Thursday, April 18.

All clubs can also sign up to three Rookie players. Rookie players are those that have not been listed with any Australian football team for the past three years.
