Can someone explain to me how the new rules affected us last Thursday ? We lost centre clearances by only 2 .

Ive noticed we are putting in a lot more work in our clearances over the first 2 weeks, I feel its having an impact on the balance of the rest of our game hence why Im constantly sayingits a bit of a perfect storm atm with the injuries, new midfield coach whose obviously got the message to focus on clearances. It'll all smooth out as the season progresses, bc we're a damn good footy side. As for the new rules - they are having sweet FA effect on us.

Weren’t we number 3 or 4 in the league for clearances from centre last year thkugh ? I just rekon as another poster said we just were chasing #pieshaveinjuries all night , we were looser than a hooker on a sat night .

Yep we were, was never an issue, but im talking around the ground clearances, our numbers seem to be up based on small sample of first 2 rounds

I think the failure to cover Rance this week with a genuine tall or player capable of playing kp was the most baffling decision of all.Instead of dropping Balta it probably should have been him.there is now a need to cover both Rance and Grimes this week in defense they should be covered by Balta and Garthwaite and the loss of Riewoldt should be covered by a fellow tall in Moore.

Instead we will persevere with small soft mids and mid fwds and ignore the obvious lack of size and height right thru the team.

Has anyone stopped to think why there is no plan B or why we dont go 1v1 when the system gets picked apart.
It was amazing last week that we didn't go one on one against Collingwood at some stage. They played rope a dope with us until we ran out of legs. 10 minutes of man on man and that game plan would have had to be shelved for a bit. But no not Hardwick, he is too stubborn.

If you go back and watch the first 4 games this season (2 JLT games and rounds 1 & 2) you'll notice that we've only really gone full bore for about 2-2.5 quarters and then struggled for the rest of the games to stick with the opposition. So I don't believe we've been overtaken by the horde, but rather we've realised that there is little point being at your best in March/April and that it's better to be hitting your peak in August/September while building through the middle part of the season.

IMO we probably looked at the first 2 months of the season and said lets get to a 4-4 record, then aim to be 8-5 by time we get the bye in round 14. Then in the final 9 games look at winning 6-7 as we build into the finals. That would get us into the finals with a 14-8/15-7 record which given the likely evenness of the season gets us in the mix for the top 4 still.

Losing Jack and Rance in particular makes it tougher to achieve but if our list is as good as we believed it was heading into the season it shouldn't be an issue.

I think that our game style can still be a commanding one , we just gotta get the moving parts right. Defenders taking intercept marks , small forwards applying pressure and our midfield winning some god damn contested ball . Fail on all that and it don’t matter what cotton picken game plan you dream up. Have a feeling that there will be a debutant or two sent out to send a message to the group to pull the collective digits out

Good advice cb,

Everything is such a drama. All these negative overtones in the media, on the board etc. People are literally pissing their pants in a marathon. Why? Just calm down. 21 rounds to go. If the pies can arse their way into a granny, anyone can.

It's all Mav Weller's fault.

Theres something I want to bring up - I hear everyone mention our form tailing off towards the end of last season - I actually beg to differ - I think its dialogue that suits the narrative and is an easy theory to run with, but is actually not correct.

Apart from the dogs game in the final round which was putrid, I felt we played good strong footy against the cats and bombers prior to that - the problem was, we were resting up to 5 first teamers at a time in the last 3-4 weeks and even though the scoreboard shows we just fell over the line against the cats and bombers, in reality we were cruising and comfortably a 5-6 goal better side all night. We just eased off towards the end of the games possibly with self preservation in mind with finals around the corner.

I think in the end we were our own worst enemy and flirted with our form in those final 3-4 weeks - as we all know you cant just flick form on and off. In hindsight I believe we shouldve rested Prestia for a couple more weeks after the 2nd pies game and shouldve kept playing everyone else every game unless they had genuine injury concerns as we had the bye before finals to rest up.

We havent been found out, we havent dropped back, we simply flirted with form and struggled to switch on fully when facing a red hot side in the prelim. Now its a new season 2 rounds in, hardly time to hit panic stations

Fully and unreservedly concur , that win v the bombers as we rested 5 qty players was a cracking win. Could write a thesis on it , pies did a number on us with our setup that hadnt changed since r1 , really did their homework and have done again . I feel only thing we could have changed is to have added a tall aPproaching finals , give Moore a run for example . We went into final series carrying astbury and broads very average form. We got a decent spread of emerging talent both tall and small , I look forward to seeing if a few of these guys can step up
