Garlett is not a forward and it would be madness to move him after training and being told he is set for HB this year. First time he’s been fit and had shown some good signs and imo is improving. A bit of trust and confidence along with some patience and we could have a very good player. Has the talent

Last thing we need to do with Garlett is to now set him a new role.
It's been somewhat painful to watch at times, but you can see that something may be there. It would have been there sooner had have Docherty been available, but it's still there.
Glad the coaches and MC are giving it a good run and if it's not quite in place later, go back to the NBs and nut it out there.

Just got to pick the best players available. Garlett is not in our best 22. He's not playing further up the ground because there's a midfield full of players ahead of him. He's not going to play forward because he played forward all of last year and showed nothing. He's filling a role we need him to fill.

Currently our backline is missing Docherty, Williamson and Marchbank from it's best 22. When they are fit and have form they will come back in and who they replace is dependant on what roles they can play. Williamson probably replaces Garlett. Marchbank is an upgrade on Plowman but only when he forms some real solid match fitness. Docherty is an upgrade on either Simpson, Thomas or Newman.

Newman is borderline but with Simpson at his age, newman is a replacement there I feel. He's also a replacement for Thomas.

Docherty to replace Simpson

Williamson to push Garlett out when form permits - Garlett to then compete with Newman for the other small defender spot

Marchbank to push Thomas out or forward - he can play as a quick interceptor now that Weitering is a true KPD

Plow is the second or maybe even first picked defender each week. Not enough love for Plowman

Garlett is best 22 and has been for the first 2 rounds. It's also not a the now but the future. Players like Garlett that are picked with a bit of speculation need some patience and time. He is 22 with 30 games. Even the best take time. Missed a year of football, has had some really tough personal issues and injuries. First time he has been fit. What really impressed me was after finishing last year early with injury was back at club as a soon as able and trained as hard as anyone. He is so much fitter and stronger than ever. Credit to him.

If he steps ups and fills a role then we are so much better off. The more that do the better we will be

Well my opinion with all being fit Garlett is lucky to be an emergency. All well and good that he's had a crack with his training but results is what it's all about and they haven't been at a level where he would be ahead of the injured outs if they were fit. He might develop into a decent player but at the moment he's getting a game because we have injuries. Time will come when guys like Thomas and Simpson retire and if he improves his game to their level or better then great but he has a long way to go.

Minded Rioli in round one - Rioli 17 disposals and two behinds. Garlett 9 disposals. Not too bad an effort.
Minded Motlop Round two - Motlop 22 disposals 3 goals. Garlett 13 disposals. Fair belting IMO.

He's not best 22, he's just filling in at the moment. Long way to go to becoming best 22. Excuses like injuries or not enough games or whatever don't elevate you to being best 22, only proven capabilities and results and that hasn't happened yet. When it does and on a consistent basis then yes he can be discussed as being best 22 but he's not there yet.

You’re quoting his efforts in his first two games as a HBF?

Maybe the club is developing him to defend better befor moving him forward again ..who knows!!

I always worry with defenders that are prone to panic in decision making. Garlett is in this category. See if he can establish himself though.

Best 22 is the ones being picked. Period.
We can theorize about what another may do if picked but if they are injured they fall behind that best 22. Both in experience and fitness. So the whole argument is based on a kind of alternative reality and a dollop of wishful thinking. There is no guaranteee that any player will instantly come back as they were.

Harsh reality is harsh reality. We have Marchbank/Williamson/Kennedy/McCreadie/Kreuzer/Lang/Pickett/LeBois/Cuningham and Docherty as blokes everyone thinks are going to be great inclusions - no guarantees on any of them because they are proven injury prone players - sad but true.

Agree would love to see Garlett, Fasolo and Murphy at the feet of Harry, Charlie and Mitch, as their synchronization improves they’ll fire up big time.

garlett and Pickett in the forward line. Let them force their way back into the F50. Garlett will have added the defensive side to his game after this season and could be a handful in the forward line in 2020. Pickett IF he comes back determined to get fit and has some luck, may add some real bite around the packs

No one thinks Lebois or Lang will be great inclusions.

Garlett's last AFL game for Carlton in 2018 was July - he is 22 and has played a total of 30 games of AFL - 13 of them for Carlton. 2018 was a disaster for him as he did his shoulder bumping Stephens in his second JLT game and tried to 'endure' his way through the season with a bung shoulder due to injuries to other players for a total of 11 games. To put things in context he has less game time than most of the kids SOS has recruited.

I think it is fair enough to give a player at least 50 games before writing them off - it is pretty obvious Garlett is playing a lot like a forward trying to learn to be a defender - he has an attacking mindset sometimes unsuited to a situation at hand - and his instincts as a forward sometimes take precedence when they shouldn't as a defender. He has a few more weeks to show that he can be that small faster defender the side is missing until Marchbank/Williamson and McCreadie come back into calculations - or Shumaker/Stocker put their hands up.
Yes, I agree with this. For me, when a player is introduced to a new position they must be given the time to adapt. The encouraging thing for Garlett is that he's improving every week. It's strange that Garlett's critics never seem to question his football ability, yet after two weeks in a totally new role they have written him off as a defender. Some of these critics had already made their minds up in the JLT, before he'd even played a proper game.

If there was no upside you'd rightly say what's the point and end the whole exercise, but I can see Garlett after a month getting his head around the lock down aspects of the role and from there building the confidence to start rebounding with intent.

Neville Jetta wasn't Neville Jetta until he became Neville Jetta. Picked up in 2009. Delisted in 2013. Rookied in 2014... Or something like that. Becoming the Backman we admire in the later years.

Happy we are developing Garlett and with his progress. Best place to learn is playing and that's in the ones at the moment.
