Shedda should captain in Cotchs absence.

Been thinking about this. I know Jack is VC and captains in Cotchs absence, but there’s something about Shedda captaining this club that really appeals to me.
And i think it would be a special thing and a really great message to the broader community in healing and tackling things like racism on if we had an indigenous player as captain. What are other peoples thoughts on it?

The last two wins, particularly the first one have been so important.
Over in Adelaide.
Leaders injured and suspended, the playing group was probably in shock the week before there where new faces.
I love Jack and how he always puts in.
I’m only guessing but I think Edwards would be a bit more inclusive and probably a bit less emotional than what Jack can be.
I really like the way Edwards talked to the group before they came out’ve the rooms against Sydney and everyone was listening(apart from Stack being the excitable kid)
I think the players might play for Edwards more and be a bit prouder of him in some ways cause he doesn’t go looking for the limelight.

Pre Swans game on Saturday - the vision of Edwards addressing the group in the rooms - interplay with Sydney Stack etc...
I was very impressed how together the group looked.

Not sure if he will captain with Jack back - probably depends on what Jack thinks about it.

Great choice, he’s game has lifted with the extra duty as well.

But Riewoldt has earned his right to be step in captain.

This.

I love Edwards, he's probably my favourite player to watch but Jack is a terrific leader himself and as you say, he's earned the right.

Would send a good message that it’s not just about hierarchy if Sheds remains captain in cotch’s absence, and recognise the success the whole team have achieved under Sheds.

That said with Cotch out for longer than anticipated I reckon Jack will get the gig.

Have seen a similar situation in cricket with the England cricket team. Vaughan skipper and Flintoff vice captain. Vaughan was a good captain and decent player then gets a long term injury. Flintoff takes over and Strauss becomes vice captain. Flintoff was a good player and poor captain, stupidly bowls himself 50 overs in an innings v SL at Lord's and ends up missing the win and gets a medium term stress fracture type injury from memory. So Strauss takes over the captaincy, and like Edwards here, does a great job, looks like he was born to do it, team seems happy despite the absence of two leaders who are two of the better players. What happened next is the worst mismanagement of leadership roles I can recall seeing in a professional sport's team.

After a few months or so Flintoff comes back from injury. So the hierarchy decide foolishly to overlook the fact he has already proven beyond a shadow he couldn't captain a toy boat in a bathtub, and reinstate him as skipper, losing all the good dynamic built up under Strauss's very able captaincy. This was bad enough, but next thing Vaughan has recovered from his knee injury but has no form as a player whatsoever. So they decide to bring him back as skipper in all formats. He basically never plays another decent innings and is now in charge of a very confused team, which malfunctions badly. Strauss loses all form I would say in part due to disillusionment at being cast aside as leader.

In the end Vaughan retires from a sinking ship, and Strauss is reinstated above Flintoff and lo and behold the team starts to function again.

Now there are differences in this situation because Riewoldt(or Rance if he returned) would likely make very decent captains, they have proven their leadership qualities in recent seasons. I do believe however it is worth considering not rigidly following the original hierarchical structure when you clearly have a new and fresh dynamic functioning well. Also, Riewoldt will have plenty on his plate getting some form back and developing a new role he has to adapt to given Lynch's presence.

I would say stick with Edwards as skipper. Fortunately the team seems to be blessed with good on field leadership options, and all of them come across as happy to be selfless. There is some very watchable(and effective) dynamic that has been brought to this team in the last two weeks though, and both Edwards' playing role and his leadership seem to be at the centre of that. I have faith in the club making good decisions, but it is not always as easy to choose between apparently good options as it may appear.

If Jack wanted to cede to Shed, perhaps (and it would be a very Jack thing to do), but whether it's considered hierarchical (or whatever it is) it is fitting that Jack be Captain for this game. Dreamtime, that's another issue, but this game is Jack's for him to cede if he wants it to focus on his game.

If you think that Edwards is a good captain for us, then wait until Riewoldt stands in as captain. I was actually very impressed with the energy he gave the Rampage in the AFLX tournament, so I think he’d be immense. Don’t get me wrong, Edwards has been fantastic as you said, but Riewoldt would be a good leader for our team in my opinion.

Jack is returning from a few weeks out, might be good if he just had his game to concentrate on.

Sheds has done a great job. Leave him there until Cotch returns.

If Cotch misses a game later in the year then Jack can fill the role.

Doesn't he play for St George in the NRL and is currently suspended pending changes?
Don't want De Bell End.

No thanks. You've been in Queensland too long.

Haere Ra

You tell him Kiwi.
