I cannot believe how far off Melbourne have been this year. Incredible they made such strong strides over recent years, got to a prelim final and like a dear in headlights completely froze and gone back ever since.
Do you reckon it is just purely really bad form and they can get their club back on track or is something fundamentally wrong in football department there.
Their defence looks non-existent. Did not see any of other night but not surprised seeing they lost easily. They are the one club in my whole time of watching that seem to quickly revert to shitness so quick after a period of going seemingly in right direction. Shit, even the worst club in the history of the league in St.Kilda got to 3 grand finals last decade before returning to their normal low standards.

It is a football mystery.

People who thought we were reliant on playing an extra down back failed to notice how unbelievably reliant Melbourne was on it. They were able to turn the match into a stoppage based scrap because sides cannot cut you up through the middle when you firmly have 2 planted behind the ball. Injuries have hurt, but not as much as the delusion of grandeur that has made their entire forward line 10 times less effective, the trading of Hogan. He made it work; he allowed Tom Macdonald to be Joe-the-goose perpetually, and Weideman to develop as the third tall, with him being the more threatening option always.

Their backline is set up to play WB circa 2016; as an offensive pivot, rather than a defensive stopper. They've built it not to make it less able for the opposition to score - which has returned to vogue, due to the 6-6-6 rule - but to make it easier to transition faster; Lever and May to double down on this theory when they return from injury. It's why they were so high scoring last season; they transitioned so quickly their lack of pace never truly showed out. Now, they're unfit, short their two interceptors down back, and short of the critical mass of forwards required to always have one out at all times. It's a coaching problem for mine rather than a personnel issue, and it's due either to arrogance - we'll play our way, and cop the knocks as they come - or foolishness - of course things will stay the same, how could they not?

Be interesting when they get back Lever, Hannan and May whether they can become a good team again.
They may need to accept this season itself is a write off as a premiership contender and just get back to basics to play decent football first. They still got a lot of talent on list so should not throw the baby out with bathwater whatever happens. Be interesting if they panic and make knee jerk decisions or just toughen up from within and get their shit right.

Melbourne for some time now, have been a team you just can't trust.
They can hold a strong lead, yet supporters still feel uncomfortable until well into the last quarter.

It's certainly something none of here want to happen to our club, as we inevitably start to rise up the ladder.
Our culture is so much better than it was not so long ago, our leaders are of premium quality and character and our club are working hard to not just display, but to embrace a 'we're all in it together' environment.

Richmonds fortunes changed when Balme came to them. It wasn't just luck or the quality of players.
Melbourne still seems somewhat disjointed to me on and off-field. It's hard to turn that around.

Forty seasons of following football. I've seen 13 of 18 clubs win premierships.
Gold Coast and Gaints relative newbies so they totally forgiven for not much to show so far. Fremantle been around a quarter of a century but seen them at least in a grand final and not totally smashed.
Even Saints that won no premierships had two narrow misses of winning grand finals and been in four grand finals.
Melbourne been in two grand finals my whole life and both times absolutely shit. Mostly recently the prelim final last year another of one of worst finals performances I ever seen as a non-contest.

They are presently the worst club in my time of watching football.
Glad I did not grow up barracking for them. What a painful club for someone to follow all that time.
Wonder if I will ever see a Melbourne flag.

Melbourne could be ripe for a raid, there will be a lot of slap in the face truths being told and some may not like it...

Problem is they don’t really have what we need, BP/HBF/FP but I’d have a crack at Jayden Hunt. Petracca is one that would interest and I reckon he’d be getting some cold hard facts thrown his way - watts style

For such a highly rated list, the talent in Melbourne's 22 drops away steeply after the top 5-6 players. There's nothing of any real value on the fringes.

Interesting that Adelaides first round selections in the past thee years, are listed as emergencies this weekend; Gallucci, Fogarty & Jones.

Meanwhile their 2015 first round selection Milera is injured and 2014's Lever is gone.

I said Hogan a while back without all the verbose postings ;)
