Clearing out the storage space in my house and came across a box full of old footy records and club magazines.

Found this Football Plus special from 1996.

El_Scorcho almost the Pirates
Club of the ,90s is very apt

I knew the Pirates was an option but never heard of the Destroyers. I thought the 3rd option was the sharks.

The Power js still the best option in my opinion.

Got what we wanted I guess, a 90s identity.

Destroyers is interesting, the name is terrible but the idea of a maritime based identity is the right line of thinking.

I'm guessing that Freo going with Dockers scared us off of a maritime theme, but i'm not sure. 2/3 of the shortlisted names were maritime themed. We were so close. It was so obvious. If you can't go Magpies, go Port Adelaide.

I know this is a common theme among sports fans all over the globe, but it makes me a bit sad that a few blokes sitting around a meeting table making an ill considered decision almost 30 years ago could have frustrating consequences to this day. Oh well, at least our guys didn't Nerio Ferraro it and install an eternal glass ceiling above his own club. We can still change to Pirates tomorrow.

Sharks may have been a Crows option?

Ah Glenelg, we'll never forget. Tigers and stripes.

I had forgotten they took this to the Supreme Court too. They must have had a standing order there.

I did school work experience at Football Plus when that special was being prepared.

Ashley Porter: “I’ll send you a copy when it’s published”

Ron Howard: “He didn’t”

The Sharks was ruled out because of the West Adelaide Sharks who still existed in the national soccer league at the time.

I know that Woodvile used the nickname for a few years, but I would have preferred "Warriors".

To me it conjures up images of Bob Quinn on the battlefield, as well as the way the PAFC went about things in the 1950s under Fos Williams.

I would have even preferred "Dolphins" to "Power".

Yeah. I don't fault anyone involved because we did what was in vogue at the time, but carn. Our branding has been weak at best. Most of the really good stuff we've done has happened because the supporters have leant hard on the club to do it.

Plus we could have done a sick war dance for Sir Douglas Nicholls round.

all they have to do is go from the lightning power angle to the strength power angle. i remember someone here years ago suggested the old logo clenching a scarf instead of a bolt, to represent the fans, ala southampton's logo. MORE OF THAT THINKING, LESS ELECTRICITY.

The Worriers? 😢😩

I'm debating with an Idiot Crom supporter. One of his arguments around our history is Mark Williams saying we have no connection to the Magpies!

I don't even recall this happening. Does anyone remember such a statement from Mark? I can only assume he was referring to the SANFL created Magpies at the time.
