Review R5: The Good, Bad and the Nicks vs. Geelong Cats

Did anyone get frustrated by how they were able to waltz out of their defensive 50 when we scored a point?

Each and every time they seemed to get to centre wing with ease.

Was always going to be a problem against the good teams. It was the same last week but not as obvious on TV. People just don't want Kane Cornes to be right. He makes it about Tex but it's not the inderviduals or how many goals they kick but the collective group in forward line can't defend.

WTF is going on with Dawson, especially his kicking, looks way off his best, carrying a niggle or what, looks gassed most of last night and a DE% of 38.1%? The absolute bottom rated Disposal efficiency of the 46 players that played.

Edit*

And a game high 8 Clangers.

Are points counted as clangers, he kicked 3 of those.

Rob apologists will point to his hit outs but he was less than useless last night.

He is a big guy but he is so easily pushed out of the way. He should be clearing a path for our midfielders but gets brushed aside or goes after the ball which never ends well. Any pressure on him and his hit outs go nowhere.

When he does get the ball, he is so slow getting rid of it he is always intercepted or tackled.

But the list is good! Should be good enough to carry us to finals - despite the shit coach and ROBs poor performance last night!

We played some really good footy last night. Went into 3/4 time 8 points up before shitting the bed. Am I unhappy with the coaching and that last qtr - absolutely.

Am I over-reacting and saying we are now no chance at finals - Not just yet.

Oh and didn't you say you put me on ignore?

Finals should have been last year, this year we should be winning a final or 2 or pushing 4-6 after H&A. Just because you have low expectations for the list doesn’t mean everyone needs to align with that.

As posted recently, this is largely it for high end talent, we’ll be around the mark, mostly “making finals” with this list for the next few years. The point of bottoming out to our extent and ‘rebuilding’ for the duration we have is that the end result is genuine top 4 contention over 3-5 years. All we’ve done is end up back where we’ve always been, perpetually making finals here and there, the odd one year spike and a lot of remaining mathematical until late in the year.

Welcome back to where we’ve always been.

Unless Balme is successful in totally ripping apart every strongly held philosophy ingrained in our ‘footy club’. That’s our only hope.

Whoosh, the ignore line was a joke seeing I had just been sparring with you. Lighten up 97981025!

I agree our list is good, but it’s hampered by Nicks and to a lesser extent ROB.

Nicks is a handbrake to ultimately one day being a premiership contender.

It’s not Nicks individually, it’s ingrained club culture and philosophies that result in him being highly regarded and extended despite overall performance. Coaches have come and gone, but ultimately nothing has changed in terms of how we go about putting our ‘best 22’ on the park.

The Hugh Greenwood thing all over again

Overrating stats and underrating impact

Crouch had 28 disposals and 11 clearances for just FOUR score involvements. One more than Max Michalanney who was playing on Jeremy Cameron. Fewer than Soligo who had a stinker

We are better off with someone else winning those clearances that might actually do something with them. And then on top of that he did nothing defensively. Two tackles.

Im not a huge fan but he's dishing ball out? How many win it inside burst from stoppage hit leading fwd lace out (yeah probably bit more today game going past us)? He's probably missing out on even more credited clearance and SI, he might as well just bang it on the boot from stoppage himself. His team mates on the outside, post clearance burning it.

His SI goes up when we beat up on weak oppo, that's not really him getting to the outside, he wouldn't know where it is. Try use him better, we not capitalising on his first touch (or get rid of him). Against stronger oppo our SI's alone is pretty much back half transition, not conducive to Crouch high SI

Ours could barely muster a jog. Soligo was moving in sand. Dawson not far from it. It was obvious to everyone (except our coaches) during the 3rd quarter. Had to get fresh legs into the midfield. We didn't and it cost us the game.

We had Curtin and Draper with about a dozen touches between them biding their time ahead of the ball where 99% of entries are directed to the big 3 and Keays. But best stick with the continuity imperative, freshness in the midfield rotation won’t help.

I wonder if the instruction from Chris Scott was to play slow for most of the first half. Open up in last two minutes of second quarter.

Then cut us up in second half. Knowing we were fatigued.
The big change I saw was Cats ceased butchering the ball by foot and started running at our defence. The first quarter and a half they played that idiotic stationary precision passing method that never worked against decent sides. We got beaten because our structure precludes defensive function in our 50 and personnel choices that compound that issue through oppo transition and into our D50.

Nah mate.

Peatling was pushed out for Rankine.

What da eff? They both played midfield flat out last round. Jeepers, this is Waynus levels of delusion, you’re covering all our MIA posters. Congrats to you.

Our foot skills coming out of defence was shocking in that last quarter. Fatigue? At least we were still going for the tough kicks. They were just so poorly executed.
On reflection, I really think the three games in 11 days (with the last being of 5 days and a hit QLD day) have had a massive impact on last nights result. It shouldn’t have - if nicks had thought about the impact that this period of games would have on us collectively. Of course he wasn’t to know that we’d suffer injuries to key players three weeks in a row, but that contingency SHOULD have been considered. I think we will bounce back in 12 days. But we need to hope like hell both Murray Davis AND Balme look at our inability to close out close games and put strategies in place to overcome this glaring weakness.

Peatling 27% Crouch 62%

Peatling 27% Rankine 59%

Peatling 27% Soligo 59%

Crouch has been consistently running at 60% and above

The week before without Crouch Soligo 73%, Rankine 67% and Peatling 30%

The argument can be made that Crouch cut into Rankine and Soligos time

Im not sure its definitive but either way given Rankines test before the game ( unless that was subterfuge) they got it wrong whether it was Rankine or Crouch

Went over the highlights. Nicks truly had a shocker. Did nothing logical with Smith, Holmes or Atkins. Atkins needed Crouch or Dawson to sit on him. Smith needed Peatling and Keays to Holmes.

But he stayed rigid and we lost. He puttge "expendables" in young Taylor on Smith, such a joke

Step 1. Fire the coach

It's "Blight time" for the club.

We've been in "Hope things get better time" limbo for a number of years but eventually we have to accept that this is it.

Go out and get a big name, proven coach as we did back in 1996.

Surprised by the extent of the knee jerk reactions here.

The fact is you played insanely good footy the first 3 weeks, then lost by a point to probably a top 4 side in a game you SHOULD have won ( rankine free).

You got overrun last night and lost by 19…

If things went a fraction different, you would be sitting 4-1 and top four.

Is that horrible?? Absolutely not. When you compile it with the umpire f up from the GC game it builds tension tho.

Adelaide will make finals, and if things click right time of year go deep into September.

Its a real fork in the road - there's a strong possibility we get caught in a Ken cycle if we don't make some decisions on Nicks this year. If we sneak into finals and he gets an extension on the back of that, we may as well all go on a break for 5 years until the list turns over again, because Nicks will win us nothing.

RoBs favourite hit area is between 6 and 9.

Yet we rarely have someone there, and it is the easiest area for opposition to run onto the ball anyway.

So yeah, his raw HO stat is useless. As is his HTA stat.

Fine for you to say this when Cats rarely miss finals.

Check out our record under Nicks compared to Scott!

Nicks was outcoached yet again by Scott... no wonder you want us to persist with Nicks!

Ok, so if rankine got his free kick and you won… then lost last night be were sitting here 4-1, would you be thinking the same??

Yes!

Clearly you haven't seen many of my posts here or on the main board.

Nicks is not a very smart man.

Just listen to him talk & you will know what I'm talking about.

He can't suddenly grow a brain capable of winning a flag

We've watched Nicks coach for over 100 games. A couple of games, with most wins coming against coaches he usually beats, won't change a thing
